COURSE OBJECTIVES

The objective of the present course is to emphasize

the formulation and solution of problems in
engineering mechanics by appropriate mechanical
and mathematical models.

• The understanding and technical knowledge gathered in this

course will be directly required and applied in many future
courses, such as –

• Mechanics of Solid (L-2, T-2),

• Theory of Machines (L-3, T-1),
• Machine Design (L-3, T-1 & L-3, T-2)

Message to My Freshman Students

- K. M Parsons

 It is no part of my job to make you learn. At university,

learning is your job and yours alone. My job is to lead
you to the fountain of knowledge.

 You need to learn to listen.

 Critical listening questions and evaluates what is being

said and seeks key concepts.

My Alternative Message to My Freshman Students

- Andrew Robinson

 In a University class, much of your study has to be self-directed,

with the teacher giving guidance on what to do.

 Problem solving is the key to success.

 You must become a self-directed learner, rather than an

automaton.

 I will put full trust in you, as an adult, to work in class.

 My role is to help you grow intellectually, to master the subject.

I can show you the way, but you must make that
journey.

INTRODUCTION

ME 241: Engineering Mechanics

What is Mechanics?
Mechanics is the study of forces that act on bodies and the
resultant motion that those bodies experience.

 Mechanical interaction between bodies.

How different bodies apply forces on one another and how they
then balance to keep each other in equilibrium.

The first part of the course – STATICS.

Motion of particles and how does the motion of particles get

affected when a force is applied on them.

The second part of the course - DYNAMICS

ME 241: Engineering Mechanics

Classification of Mechanics
1. Mechanics of Rigid Bodies:
- The bodies do not deform under the action of forces
 Statics
 Dynamics

2. Mechanics of Deformable Bodies:

- The bodies deform under the action of forces
3. Fluid Mechanics:
Incompressible and Compressible fluid

Applications
With roots in physics and mathematics-
Engineering Mechanics is the basis of all the
mechanical sciences.

 Civil engineering, Materials science and

engineering, Mechanical engineering and
Aeronautical and Aerospace engineering
…….

To answer questions such as -

• Is the car’s suspension strong enough?

• Which material can we use for the

aircraft’s fuselage?

• Will the bridge carry more than 5 trucks at

the same time?

ME 241: Engineering Mechanics

History of Mechanics
In the early stages of scientific development, Physics mainly consisted
of mechanics and astronomy.
