Role of Light
Role of Light
INTRODUCTION
Architectural elements portray magic between light and shadow. Light is the most common and also the most
wonderful element in nature. It plays a crucial role in our daily life as it is the only factor which enables us to see. It
helps us to visualize the environment, architecture, humans and objects. It is the basic yet chief necessity of our life.
It is one of the most important medium by which people can percept and experience an architectural space. Light
make building space becomes vivid and full of vitality, it must be considered during space visual design.
“When you light a candle, you also cast a shadow” – Ursula k. Le Guin
We are aware of the fact that with light come the shadows. Combination of light and shadow has an outstanding
aesthetic effect on any building. Shadows are not only used to provide shades and protection from sunlight but they
could also be used for creating different patterns and adding different dimension to the spaces. The quality of light
and shadows affects the ambience of the place. Play of light and shadow creates a different aura and mood of the
space. Shadow creates a powerful impact on a building and its surroundings. The intensity of shadow in dark is only
known when a piece of light falls upon it. Creating openings at intervals to enter direct sunlight breaks the monotony
of the area and gives us the sense of mass and void. Similarly, the placement of similar objects in large span of direct
daylight, blocks it to create pattern. For example- Colonnades used in Greek and roman architecture. Various
elements of buildings help to cast shadow like louvers, pergolas, screen, shading devices etc. If an architect has a
better understanding of the interdependencies and relationship of light and shadow, he/she will be able to control the
amount and area upon the light is falling and also is able to compose shadows patterns. Hence, it became important
to understand and study the importance of light and shadow.
AIM
OBJECTIVES

The study analyses the role of different forms of shadows formed by natural light in design.
Understand and analyze how architecture was shaped by light and shadow.
The study of the philosophy of prominent architects in relevance with light and shadow techniques.
to understand how structure and surface can be manipulated to regain the properties of light and shadows.
to understand how the different relationships between structure and surface be utilize to experiment with
light and shadow to play around with an architecture that may be define by passage of time and space.
LIMITATIONS
The area of research will be precedent research on louis kahn and architects that have an interests in light
and shadow such as tadao ando.
The different relationships between surface and structure, their properties will be defined and analyzed by
photographs only.
