Back to School Update

August 4, 2020
Dorchester District Two schools will open on Tuesday, September 8 using the
temporary eLearning model. In this model, all students will begin the year learning
from home. It is our intent to transition to the hybrid model the week of September
14; however, if health conditions are not improved, the State Department of
Education has indicated that we could ask for an extension of the eLearning model.
These decisions would be made and communicated in a timely manner allowing
parents and staff to make necessary plans for students.
The current plan for the opening of schools in Dorchester School District Two has been
approved by State Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman. Dorchester School
District Two school-based instruction is determined by the level of disease activity in
accordance with Department of Health and Human Services (DHEC) as high, medium and
low risk as follows:

*4K-1st graders will attend school 5 days a week for ½ -day sessions (a.m. or p.m.) in the
hybrid model, not during emergency eLearning. Transportation will be provided for
students.
The second instructional model is the Dorchester School District Two Virtual Academy
Model which is 100% virtual instruction and support regardless of disease activity.
Instruction is by district teachers in partnership with Edmentum, Apex Learning and
VirtualSC. Daily attendance is required as teachers and students maintain a similar daily
schedule as school-based models. Enrollment for the academy is a 3-step process that
includes completing the application form on the Virtual Academy webpage at
www.ddtwo.org/va; registering your child at the zoned school of residence at
www.ddtwo.org/2020; and signing the Virtual Academy Parent/Guardian Contract which will
be emailed to parents applying to the academy.
Students will be issued ipads or laptops prior to the start of school on September 8, 2020
for use in the classroom or at home. Students must complete the registration process
before they will be issued the device. Schools will inform parent of the distribution
process.
