DAY 1
INTRODUCTION:
In true friendship, we are transformed not only because we know or trust our friend, but also because we begin
to make choices in view of this friendship. The same is true about our friendship with Jesus. Real commitment to Christ
changes not only what we believe or how we pray. It transforms how we act and live as we strive to follow Him. Asked
for by St. Ignatius of Loyola and set to music in the musical Godspell, the thrust of our faith can be thus proclaimed: “Day
by day, dear Lord, three things we pray: to know You more clearly, to love You more dearly, to follow You more
nearly.’’
Following Christ, however, has its challenges. Today, different people, material things, and ways of thinking cry
out to us, “Follow me!” We are sometimes attracted to popular celebrities, possessions, or self-centered attitudes of
doing things “my way’’ without any regard for the good of others. Amidst these many competing factors, Christ never
ceases to call us to become truly free and truly happy: “[L]ove one another as I love you ‘’ (Jn 15:12); “Be a Good
Samaritan” ( cfLk 10:37); “[W]ash one another’s feet. I have given you a model to follow …” (jn13:14-15). Christ reminds
us today that, as His disciples, we are all called to be of loving service to others.
1. Understand the personal and social context of our everyday moral struggles;
2. Illuminating the basic questions of morality through the Gospel narrative of The Rich Young Man ( Mt 19:16-21);
and
3. Presenting an overview of the topics to be discussed in the succeeding chapters.
I. Development
Following Christ in our world today can be both easy and difficult. It can be easy because there are so many
“LIGHTS” that guide us in doing the good and following Christ’s example. However, there are also so many
“SHADOWS” that hinder us from becoming truly loving like Christ.

J. R. R. Tolkien”s literary masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings, tells the story of a world threatened by evil
because of a ring that corrupts all who fall under its power.
In the film version of the second book, The Two Towers, two hobbits, Frodo and Sam, take the challenge
of seeing the ring was made. They encounter many difficulties along the way. In fact, at one point, Frodo,
who was assigned to protect the ring, is very close to giving up the mission. At this point, his friend Sam
offers these consoling words:
“I know. It’s all wrong. By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great
stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes
you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to
the way it was when so much bad had happened… Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant
something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know
now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. Because they were holding
on to something… That there’s some good in the world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.”
