Reply On Report No. 174 Drainage System Pipe Fixation: I: Moment of Inertia Z: Section Modulus L: Supporting Span

The document discusses the calculation of pipe fixation for a forced HDPE main pipeline at a service gallery. It provides formulas for determining the maximum bending moment, supporting span length, and section modulus based on simple beam calculations. The constants used in the example calculation are given as: outer diameter (OD) of 315mm, inner diameter (ID) of 257.8mm, uniform load (q) of 757 N/mm, and maximum allowable bending stress (σm) of 150 N/mm^2. Substituting these values into the provided formulas results in a supporting span length (L) of approximately 2m, matching the given C.T.C. distance between supports.

[D1] Pipe Fixation - Forced HDPE Main Pipeline at Service Gallery - Calculation
( EAAF-1-15-EL-SCG-5030-C-3-0-0-001 A )

- Comment No. 1 : Please clarify in which codes and standards the used formulas can be found.
Reply: Based on simple span supported beam calculations, please find the following:

I : moment of inertia
Z : section modulus
L : supporting span
𝑀 𝑚𝑎𝑥 : maximum bending moment
𝜎𝑚 : maximum allowable bending stress
OD : outer diameter
ID : outer diameter
q : uniform load N/mm
= water static weight per mm + pipe static weight per mm

The system can be represented as shown in figure above, the formula for the shown figure is:

𝑞𝐿2
𝑀𝑚𝑎𝑥 =
12 𝑂𝐷
𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 ∶ 𝑦 =
2
𝑞 𝐿2 = 12 𝑀𝑚𝑎𝑥
12 𝜎𝑚 2𝐼
12 𝑀𝑚𝑎𝑥 𝐿= √
𝐿= √ 𝑞 𝑂𝐷
𝑞
𝜋 ( 𝑂𝐷 4 − 𝐼𝐷 4 )
Where: 𝑀𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 𝜎𝑚 𝑍 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 ∶ 𝐼 =
64
12 𝜎𝑚 𝑍 12 𝜎𝑚 2𝜋 (𝑂𝐷 4 − 𝐼𝐷4 )
𝐿=√
𝑞 𝐿= √
64 𝑞 𝑂𝐷
𝐼
𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 ∶ 𝑍 =
𝑦
3 𝜎𝑚 𝜋 (𝑂𝐷4 𝐼𝐷 4)

𝐿= √
12 𝜎𝑚 𝐼 8 𝑞 𝑂𝐷
𝐿= √
𝑞𝑦

Derived equation is based on simple span supported beam calculations.

- Comment No. 2 : The C.T.C. distance between the supports appears to be 2m, but it's unclear
which numbers are used in the mentioned formulas, please clarify.

Reply: Our pipe is: " PE100 SDR11 PN16 " . For this pipe in our case:

OD = 315 ( mm )
ID = 257.8 ( mm )
q = pipe weight per mm + water weight inside pipe per mm ( N/mm )
= 251 + 506 = 757 ( N/mm )
𝜎 m = 150 ( N/mm2 )

Substituting in the equation :

𝐿= √
.
3 * 150 * 3 14 ( 3 154 - 257.8 4 )
8 * 75 7 * 315

𝐿 = 2 m approx.
