Photography Vocabulary
Aperture- Aperture is one of the three camera settings, determining the image exposure, on how
light or dark it is. It also affects how much the image is in focus.
2. Aspect Ratio- Aspect Ratio is the height and width of an image.
3. Bokeh- Bokeh is an out of focus photograph, in a background of a photograph, and is created
through wide apertures.
4. Burst Mode- The camera continues snapping photos as long as you hold the button down, or until
the buffer is full.
5. Depth of Field- Photography term refers to how much the image is in focus. It will focus on one
distance, there’s a range of distance in front and behind that point that stays sharp- Depth of
Field.
6. Digital vs. Optical- Digital means the effect is achieved through software, not physical parts of the
camera. Optical is always better than digital. Terms refer to a zoom lens (on a compact camera)
as well image stabilization.
7. Exposure- How dark or light an image is. It's controlled by aperture, shutter speed, and IOS.
8. Exposure Compensation- A way to tell the camera that you like the exposure to be lighter or
darker.
9. File Format- The camera lens records the image or image file to contain more information, and
suitable for photo editing on edit softwares.
10. Focal Length- Describes the distance in millimeters between the lens and the image it forms on
the film. It forms the angle of view (how much of what is being shot)and the magnification(how
large things will appear).
11. Focus- Your camera focused on an object close to you, the object far away is blurred.
12. Flash Sync- Flash is a burst of light, it determines where the flash will fire.
13. Hot Shoe- Slot at top of the camera for adding accessories.
14. ISO- Determines how sensitive the camera is to light.
15. Long Exposure- An image exposed for a long time or long shutter speed.
16. Manual- Set the exposure instead of the camera doing it automatically. It can also refer to manual
focus, or focusing yourself instead of autofocus.
17. Metering- Guide if the photo is under or over exposed, how the camera reads the light.
18. Noise- Capturing the flecks in an image, taken at high ISO.
19. RAW/Raw Files- RAW is a type of file that gives the photographer more control over the photo
editing. JPEG is a default file and is more universal. RAW is better since it retains better quality
making it better to edit.
20. Shutter Speed- Part of the camera that opens and closes to let the light in and take a picture.
Anything that moves will become a blur.
21. Shutter Release- The button you press to take a photo, allows you to point and shoot.
22. Single Lens Reflex- Single Lens Camera that forms an image which is reflected to the viewfinder.
DSLR cameras are the most versatile of the digital camera’s.
23. Time Lapse- A video stitching several photos together taken of the same thing at different times.
24. Viewfinder- The hole you look through to take a picture.
25. White Balance- Adjusting to the different light sources, an image can look very blue or very
yellow, using a white balance makes it look white in real life or appear white in the photo.
