1. a) Predict the type of electronic transitions possible in following compounds: C2H6,


CH3CHO, O2, CH3Cl.

b) How many signals will be recorded in the low resolution proton NMR spectra of the
following compounds: Propene, Ethyl bromide and 1, 3-Dichloropropane?

2. a) Explain the high quantum yield in the photosynthesis of HCl.

b) Differentiate between fluorescence and phosphorescence with the help of Jablonski


diagram. Also mention the radiative and non-radiative transitions in the Jablonski
diagram.

3. a) Calculate the temporary and permanent hardness for a water sample containing
250mg/L, 186mg/L, 150mg/L and 180mg/L of Ca(HCO3)2, Mg(HCO3)2, CaSO4 and
MgCl2 respectively.

b) Distinguish the advantages and disadvantages of the Zeolite process of water softening
over the Lime-Soda process.

4. a) What are the advantages of using microwaves in green synthesis? Give suitable
example.

b) Analyse the role of supercritical fluids in the green synthesis of organic compounds.
Support your answer by taking a suitable example.

5. a) Differentiate between dry corrosion and wet corrosion. Explain the mechanism of wet
corrosion with the help of a suitable example.

b) Why does an impure metal corrode at the faster pace than pure metal?

6. Figure out the important characteristics and applications of the polymer reinforced
composites. Analyse the main functions of matrix phase and dispersed phase in the
polymer composites. List out the various materials which can be used as matrix phase and
dispersed phase in polymer-reinforced composites.

7. a) What are the characteristics of self-assembly? Explain the formation of self-assembled


monolayers.

b) How do the coercing colloids stabilise the nanoparticles? Explain.

8. a) Classify the crude oil on the basis of the relative ratio of the different hydrocarbons.

b) Explain the process of the production of ethylene and propylene using steam cracking
procedure.
