FORM FOUR
1. A mountaineer named YC, records the air pressure at some meters above the
base X of Mt. Kilimanjaro 710mm of mercury and at almost the top at point Y as
330mm of mercury. Given that the average density of air is 1.0kg/m3 and the
density of mercury is 13600kg/m3, calculate the height of the mountain.
3. An escalator is used to move 20 passengers every minute from the first floor of a
department store to the second. The second floor is located 5.20 meters above the
first floor. The average passenger's mass is 54.9 kg. Determine the power
requirement of the escalator in order to move this number of passengers in this
amount of time.
4. A simple hydrometer is set up with a test-tube (of length 12cm and mass of 15g)
with a flat base, and partly filled with lead shot. The tube has a uniform cross-
sectional area of 2 cm2 and 10cm of its length is under water. Calculate, with clear
explanations; (Use density of water = 1000kg/m3)
a) The mass of the lead shot in the tube. Why are the lead shot so kept?
b) the length of the tube immersed if placed in brine with density 1.25g/cm3
c) the lowest density of liquid in which this tube would float
10. A uniform plank 4.4m long and of mass 20kg is placed horizontally and
symmetrically on two supports which are 3.2m apart. A brick layer of mass 80kg
stands on the plank over one of the supports. (Use g = 10N/kg)
(a) Draw a diagram of the arrangements, showing clearly the forces acting on
the plank. Calculate the force on each support
(b) State briefly how you would expect the forces on each support to vary as the
man moves along the plank towards the other support
(c) When will the two forces on the supports equal and what will be their
magnitude?
(d) How far could the man move towards the nearer end of the plank before it
starts to tip?
11. An aquanaut stands on a uniform plank 6m long and of mass 40 kg. The plank
is suspended horizontally from vertical ropes attached 1m from each end. The mass
of the aquanaut 72kg.
(a) Calculate the tension in the ropes when the aquanaut is 1m from one of the
supports.
(b) If he jumps into water up to 10m under the surface where the atmospheric
pressure is 65cm of mercury, calculate the total pressure on his body. [Density
of mercury is 1.36x104 kg/m3; density of water = 1.0x103 kgm-3]
12. A ladder is 5m long and has mass of 16 kg. It can be balanced horizontally 2m
from one of the end. Two men, one at each end, carry the ladder. Calculate the
force each exerts on the ladder
13. A uniform bridge AB, 30m long and weighing 200000N, rest on supports at
each end. Find the forces on the supports when a car of mass 1ton is 4m from A
and a lorry of weight 100000N is 10m from B.
14. The air in each of the four tyres of a motor car exerts a pressure above
atmospheric pressure of 3×105 N/m2. Each tyre is in contact with the ground over
an area of 80 cm2. Estimate the mass of the car.
15. A metre rule is found to balance at 49 cm mark. When a mass of 100g is
suspended at 10 cm mark, it balances at 36 cm mark. Calculate the weight of the
rule.
