A. TYPES OF DECORATIVE GLASS
(NORMAL GLASS)
1. CLEAR GLASS
- Clear and transparent annealed glass
- Usually natural greenish hue or colour
- Used in doors, windows, solar applications, shelves, etc.
2. TINDED GLASS
- Float glass in which melted colorants are added for
tinting and solar-radiation absorption properties
- Saves energy, reduces heat penetration and gives striking
visual effect
- Used on exterior appearance of facades.

3. PATTERNED OR TEXTURED GLASS
- Decorative and translucent with textures or patterns
on one face for diffusing light and obstructing visibility
from outside

- Wired mesh is inlaid in the glass to protect from shattering and
breaking
- Low-cost fire resistant s
- Used to protect against the harmful effects of smoke and flame

- High quality glass free from impurities such as iron

B. TYPES OF DECORATIVE GLASS
(HIGH-PERFORMANCE)
1. SOLID CONTROL GLASS
- Special oxide coated glass that transfers less amount of
heat reducing the glare of light
- Highly recommended in tropical countries
- Reduces amount of air-conditioning required
- Used in skyscapers as glass facades in modern buildings,
conservatory roofs, air-conditioned malls and showrooms

1. LAMINATED GLASS
- Heat Proof, Sound Proof, Bullet Proof, Insulating Glass or Safety Glass
- Made by sandwiching a layer of polyvinyl butyl between two or more layers of
glass
- Used in skylight glazing, exterior curtain walls and windows, balustrades,
guardrails, etc.
2. TEMPERED OR TOUGHENED GLASS
- Strong glass heated to uniform temperature and rapidlycooled to increase the strength
- Stronger than normal glass of equivalent thickness
- Used in commercial establishments where wind, snow or thermal loads exceed,
forescalators side panels, handrails, balustrades, staircase handrails and viewing
partitions of sports complexes, resorts and airports, etc.

3. HEAT STRENGTHENED
- Processed with heat treatment for durability and safety reasons
- Mechanical strength is twice that of normal annealed glass and half of fully tempered glass
- Used for structural glazing as they safeguard against thermal breakages

4. REFLECTIVE OR MIRROR GLASS


- Mirror like appearance and wide palettes of colours to the exterior buildings
- under daytime conditions
- Metal oxide coating applied to one side to increase amount of reflection
- Used in: Office and High Rise Building Doors and Windows for privacy

5. INSULATED GLASS UNITS
- Prefabricated unit made of two or more glass panes separated by cavities filled with
dry air
- Provides excellent thermal and sound insulation properties
- Used in office buildings, hospitals, hotels and buildings with high heating or cooling
requirements, environments where atmosphere is regulated and prevents
condensation
6. CERAMIC PRINTED GLASS
- Silk-screened glass fir its appearance like a silk screen
- Used when it is important to mask a part or whole of glass for privacy or hiding
background
- Used in curtain walls, shower installations, glass doors, spandrels and partitions,
stair rails, conference rooms, etc.

7. LACQUERED GLASS
- A.K.A. Back Painted Glass (BPG)
- Painting back surface with high quality paint
- Viewed from front surface
- Used in Spandrels, contemporary cupboards, furniture, kitchen countertops,
backsplashes, washroom of cinemas, hotels, restaurants, etc.
8. FROSTED GLASS
- Translucent or obscure surface, rather than transparent surface in float glass
- One surface is etched and rough through which diffusion of light occurs
- Used where privacy is required such as shower cubicles, conference rooms, office
partitions, windows and doors of bedrooms, dressing rooms, etc.

(PRINCIPAL CONSTITUENT)
1. SODA LIME GLASS
- A.K.A soda ash glass, soda glass, commercial glass or soft glass
- Obtained from fusion of silica, lime, soda and alumina
- Used in glazing of doors, windows, and ordinary glasswares
2. POTASH LIME GLASS
- A.K.A. Hard Glass or Bohemian Glass
- Similar to Soda Lime but instead of Soda, Potash is used
- Used in Laboratory Apparatus and combustion tubes

3. POTASH LEAD GLASS
- A.K.A. Flint Glass
- Obtained from fusion of silica, lead and potash
- Used in High Quality Glassware, Cut Glass, Bulbs, Lenses and Prisms
4. BOROSILICATE
- A.K.A Pyrex Glass
- Obtained from fusion of silica, borax, lime, and feldspar
- Used in Laboratory Equipment and Cooking Utensil (withstands high temperature)

5. COMMON GLASS
- Prepared from cheap raw materials like sodium silicate, silicate, calcium silicate
- May be green, brown or yellow in colour
- Used in Household and Medicine Bottles
