Community Based Biogas Consultation Srilanka
HELP‐O is one of leading organization of the Southern Province which implements
many biogas programs with many stakeholders. The first program was begun in 2004
with Asia Foundation we could able to construct the biogas unit in “Karapitiya
Hospital” because on that time they met a big problem that is there were no proper
waste management program and because of that many massive problems were begun
from this but finally in first time of the Asia we constructed a biogas unit in Hospital
and problem were solved by the biogas unit and they have started to cultivate.
Second program was community biogas program while on this time there were huge
problem in Galle Municipal Area that is they could not able to manage the total waste
generation and they dump it irregular way. We constructed 09 biogas units in Galle
Municipal Council area all programs were implemented with the people movement
which we have formed after the Tsunami we got the support from UNDP and this was
a partnership program with UNDP, Central Environment Authority (CEA)
The third program we implemented with Practical Action and this time we constructed
a biogas unit using toilet waste (Sewerage) in Galle the project area was “Welsonpura”
the people who live in their have limited space and they have public toilet and when it
rains it overflow and many massive problem were begun and their health situation was
badly decreased and we constructed a biogas unit on that area and problem were
solved.
Another biogas construction program in “Gampaha Municipal area and also they had
one of serious problem that is organic waste. We constructed 02 biogas units in their
area that can dump 1000 KG per day and now from that unit they can generate energy
and they use it. Now they expect to cultivate from organic fertilizer. And with the
USAID support we could able to construct a biogas unit in Galle Municipal Council
land for getting the biogas for their daily cooking purpose.
Last program we implemented in “Balapitiya area” near “Madu River” that area has a
lagoon and the people cut the mangroves for get energy for their daily cooking purpose
and they dump the waste to lagoon from this environment pollution is increasing every
day. As a result of those things many fish and animals has big threat also this direct
affect to climate change for this we gave sustainable solution that is Biogas unit. From
this biogas unit they can able to get the energy that they want and rest of others are
started to cultivate from this organic fertilizer also they expect to cultivate mangroves
for protect the costal line. IUCN was funded for this program.

Consulting & Awareness program
HELP‐O conducts many awareness programs for the beneficiary and that is very
essential because without awareness program the waste management program won’t
success. The organization is implementing many awareness programs under many
themes as mention below.
1. Effective and benefits of the Biogas Unit
2. Maintain and Management of the Biogas unit
3. Organic Agriculture and Effect of the Biogas effluent
4. Non Organic waste management and POP gas
We highly recommend conducting these programs to the beneficiary organization or
institute. The all programs linked with other program after participate to all programs
the implement institute or organization can get real idea about the waste management
program. HELP‐O conducted those all programs to all biogas unit constructed places
and we aware the people about how to implement this program in proper way.
Able to implement proper waste management system
Decrease the Methane gas emission to air
Decrease the Environment Pollution
Decrease Water Pollution
Decrease the diseases which begun from the wastes
Decrease the LP Gas usage and use environment friendly energy
Able to get good and effective organic fertilizer.
Able to cultivate with using organic fertilizer
Help to decrease Global Warming
Easy to use and no threat about highly flammable
Able get maximum result from the waste
Able to lighting a lamp from the biogas
Able to generate electricity from the biogas
