The film portrays what is the life of the Filipinos during 19 th century, in the hands of Spaniards
and Americans. Also, this film told us what are the culture of the people during this century and how the
economy, and politics were being circulated. Kulas as the main character of the film represented a role of
Indio, who is ignorant because he did not given a chance to study. During 19 th century, the means of
exchange is barter. They used goods as means of exchange to other commodities they want to acquire.
They also used cedula as an identification card during the Spanish colonial period. For transportation,
they used horse, carriage and boats to travel from one place to another. In terms of politics, Spaniards
governed the Philippines, whereas friars led and established their own rules and policies in our society.
Tagalogs and other native people were afraid on the Spaniards soldier so every time they encountered
those soldiers, they escaped and hide, because those people who are under the government of the
Spaniards had no power to fight. As the film goes by, it shows that no one knows who’s the real Filipino
and has a real blood of it. But, Spaniards claimed that they are the real Filipino. Also, Padre Gil told that
you will only be a Filipino if you already have the ability to take your responsibility as a Filipino, but
some said that a true Filipino is kind, generous, loveable etc. After the Spaniards colonized the
Philippines, the Americans came and started to change the system in our government and society.
2. Based on your readings, what can you say about the film’s representation of the nineteenth
century Philippines?
In my own perspective, the 19th century film representation is slightly different from the readings
that I have read. They have different point of view but they have the same purpose which is to portray
what are the happenings during 19th century. In the readings, it focused on how the nationalist liberalist,
anti-clerical, reformists and modernizers fought their goals against the Spanish colonization. Also, it
provided a clear demonstration on what is the situation of the Philippines when it comes to economic,
political, educational and political aspects during the 19 th century wherein Rizal was the main character.
But then, in the film representation, instead of portraying the real Rizal, they made it in different persona,
which is Kulas who is an Indio who travels and encountered different situation that made him realized a
lot of things. From the moment he encountered Padre Gil, his life changed until the Americans came into
the Philippines. This film is not mainly focused on how people wanted freedom and power against the
Spaniards. It is more on the life of an Indio, how the society and government works, the life of the friars
and those people who imprisoned by the Spaniards and also the life of Kulas as an ordinary man who
wants to find his worth as a Filipino and he’s a man who fall in love.
3. What is the central question that the film seeks to answer? What are your reflection based on the
film and your understanding?
Yes, it is easy to say that “We are Filipino” and “I am Filipino” but the question is, what makes you a
Filipino? What are the qualities needed to consider that you are a Filipino? I think this is a central
question that the film seeks to answer. Because in this film, Kulas , Lim, and Padre Gil were the ones
saying different aspects of being a Filipino. Kulas and Lim were still confused if they are really Filipino
because as Padre Gil said, you will only be a Filipino if you have already capabilities to take
responsibility on your duties. But then , for Lim he considered himself as Filipino, because he was born in
the Philippines and lived until he grows up but then he’s physical features is Chinese. For Kulas, he did
not know, if he’s a Filipino but he said, he is a Tagalog, not knowing that Tagalogs are Filipinos.
As I realize in this film, it is not enough to say that we are a Filipino because being a Filipino is not a
word to say but an action to prove. Whereas, actions that will tell that we deserve to be a Filipino, an
action that will portray the qualities, traits and characteristics. Thus, the main traits of a Filipino are
hospitable, respectful, generosity, helpful, hardworking, loving and caring and having a strong family ties
and religious. Also, a true Filipino has love, concern and support on their own country. Of course, having
these qualities, we can say now that we are Filipino.
Indeed, you are true, if your heart and mind acts and speaks as a Filipino.
