Engine Disassembly

Procedure
STEP 1 STEP 2

Drain all fluids from the Remove the intake and

engine. Coolant and motor oil exhaust manifolds from

the cylinder heads.

STEP 4 STEP 3

Remove the ignition Remove drive belts,

distributor if installed water pump and

vibration damper.

STEP 5 STEP 6

Remove the rocker / Remove the rocker

valve covers arms, ball pivots,

pushrods and lifters

STEP 8 STEP 7

Remove the cylinder heads - Remove all the cylinder

the head can be heavy, get a head bolts and put them

partner. is a safe place


STEP 9 STEP 10

Put the cylinder head on a Check the cylinder walls and check

shelf for more work later for a ridge at the top of the

cylinder

STEP 12 STEP 11

Study how the timing Ream the ridge off the

gears align then remove cylinder with the ridge

Remove the camshaft Turn the motor upside

front support bearing and down now if possible

the camshaft

STEP 16 STEP 15

Check to see if all the Remove the engine oil

connecting rod caps and pan,oil pump and sump

main bearings caps assembly

have been numbered from

the factory. If not -

number them
STEP 17 STEP 18

Study how the connecting Remove ONE connecting rod and

rod caps align with the piston at a time and store in a safe

connecting rodsr place

STEP 20 STEP 21

Continue until all the Remove the main bearing

pistons and connecting caps one at a time

rods have been starting from the ends

removed and working towards the

centre.

STEP 21 STEP 22

Remove the camshaft If you are doing an engine

front support bearing and that has a transmission

the camshaft attached to it -

leave the centre main

bearing cap installed

STEP 23

Clean and inspect all the

engine parts for wear and

damage.
