Planetary Combinations to Become an Astrologer

India is considered as the birth place of Astrology. Indian Astrology is famous worldwide. Astrology is the
contribution of life long experiences of saints and seers. Today, this mode is very famous. There will be
very less people who will be unaware about Astrology.  Let us acknowledge the planetary combinations
whose presence in the birth-chart will make the person capable to become an Astrologer.

Planetary Combinations in the Birth-chart

(1) To be an Astrologer, Mercury should be in a strong position in the birth-chart. Because Mercury is the
planet of intelligence. Similarly, Jupiter should also be strong and placed in the Gajakesari Yoga with Moon.
If this yoga is created in the Ascendant, ninth, fifth or eighth house, then the person will have an interest in
Astrology.

(2) If Mercury or Jupiter is in conjunction or shares an aspect relationship in the eighth house, then the
person will be curious to know the mysterious arts and secrets.

(3) If Moon-Saturn have an aspect relationship in the birth-chart, or Moon is in conjunction with Mercury
and Saturn aspects both the planets or Saturn-Moon and Mercury are in conjunction. In addition, if Jupiter
forms any kind of relationship with Mercury or Venus, then the person will be inclined towards Astrology.

(4) If the lord of the eighth house forms a yoga with Moon or Saturn through an aspect relationship or
conjunction, or the eighth lord is in conjunction with the fifth lord, then the person will develop an interest
in Astrology.

(5) If Mercury is located in the sign of Jupiter or vice versa, even then the person will take enormous
interest in the knowledge of Astrology. In addition, if the fifth lord or the ninth lord are in conjunction or
share an aspect relationship with Mercury or Jupiter, then he will be a successful Astrologer.

(6) If Mercury, Jupiter, Ascendant lord, eighth lord, fifth lord or the ninth lord are located in the tenth
house, the possibilities to become a successful Astrologer will increase.

(7) The second house is the house of speech. If the fifth lord, eighth lord, Mercury or Jupiter are in
conjunction, then the person will learn this art to predict future.

(8) If the second lord, tenth lord, Ascendant lord or else Mercury or Jupiter are in conjunction with the fifth
house, or the eighth lord aspects on all these planets and their house lords, the person will become a
successful Astrologer and will earn his income from the profession in Astrology.

(9) If the lord of the eighth house is located in the Ascendant with the lord of the fifth house and shares an
aspect relationship or any kind of relationship with the second lord or the eleventh lord, then the person
will achieve success in the profession of Astrology.

(10) In the birth-chart of the Scorpio Ascendant, if Jupiter, which is the kaarak of knowledge, is placed in
the second house in the sign of Sagittarius and aspects the eighth house. And Ketu aspects the eighth lord
and is located in the fifth house in the Pisces sign, which is the sign of Jupiter. Sun as the tenth lord is in the
fourth house, which is the house of fame, and aspects the tenth house, and Saturn as the lord of the
fourth house located in the seventh house and aspects Moon in the Ascendant. The person will gain
popularity and fame in the profession of predicting future and will be a successful Astrologer.

(11) If Mercury is located in the tenth house in the birth-chart of Gemini Ascendant, Jupiter is aspected by
the fifth lord in the fifth house. The eighth lord and the ninth lord are placed in the Saturn Ascendant and
aspect Ketu, which is the Kaarak planet of mysterious arts and studies, and the second lord is in the Moon
Ascendant, then the person will be proficient in the field of Astrology.

(12) In the birth-chart of Virgo Ascendant, if the fifth lord, eighth lord, Saturn or Mars is located in the
Ascendant. The second lord or Venus as the ninth lord is placed in its own sign and aspects the eighth
house. Jupiter in the Kendra of Pisces aspects the Ascendant or the Ascendant lord i.e. Mercury. And Ketu
is placed in the twelfth house, which is the house of liberation, and aspects the eighth house, which is the
house of the mysterious method. Hence, the person who will have these planetary combinations in his
birth-chart, will be an expert in Astrology.

Who can be an Astrologer?

Given here are some principles and my thoughts on what yogas in a horoscope can make one proficient in
Astrology.

Before going into various yogas, the first step is to understand the qualities of the grahas, bhavas and Rasis
that contribute the yoga. Without having thorough understanding of the fundamentals one can’t master
the principles, and will find it difficult to apply them in real life cases. It is nearly impossible to find Jyotish
combinations verbatim in real life cases, hence one need to understand the basis of the combinations, to
that they can be appropriately adapted. in real life analysis.

The Grahas

1. Budha: Budha is the significator of the knowledge of Astrology, Astronomy and Mathematics. It is

also the significator for Mimansa, which is reconciliation of multiple branches of knowledge. Disciplines
such as Jyotish requires one to understand and reconcile the knowledge from multiple branches of
knowledge.

2. Surya: Surya is the giver of the Jyotisha knowledge. He gave the knowledge of Surya Siddhanta to
Maya Danav. Surya Siddhanta is one of the more accurate treatise of computation of graha positions
among many other Siddhantas. Surya is the governor of the solar system and the zodiac and thus verily
called the King. Jyotisha is known to be the eyes of the Vedas (Veda Chakshu) as it helps in looking
through the deeper secrets. Surya being the governor of the eye sight, is strongly associated with the
knowledge of Jyotisha Shastra. It is so important that the East Indian Chart Chart is called the Surya
Chakra. The other two configurations are Guru Chakra (South Indian Chart) and Shukra Chakra (North
Indian Diamond Chart). Agni Tattva is an important element of this Discipline, hence the Agni grahas
(Surya, Mangal, Ketu), Agni Rasis (Mesha, Simha and Dhanu) as well as Agni Trikona (1st, 5th and 9th)
attain high significance.

3. Guru: Guru is the giver of all kinds of knowledge including Jyotish. Which Budha helps in memorizing
and retention of information, Guru helps in understanding (digesting) it, so that one is able to apply
them in real life situations. Guru-Mangal, Guru-Surya and Guru-Budha yogas are excellent yogas for
Jyotish shastra.

4. Rahu: Rahu is the karaka for depth and darkness. Jyotish is a form of knowledge which is not
accessible to everyone (Guhya vidya). It requires one to delve deep into the matters pertaining to
creation like all the occult subjects. Hence, it is a key significator of all occult knowledge, including
Jyotish.

5. Shukra: Shukra is the Guru of the Asuras and highly knowledgeable like Guru. Shukra gives
knowledge that is practical and can used to attaining material success. It gives the knowledge of
strategy and how to defeat enemies in war. Perhaps that is why Shukra is never defeated in a Graha
yuddha. Like Guru Shukra gives many forms of knowledge, including Jyotisha. The difference between
Guru and Shukra being, while Guru helps in attaining spiritual success, Shukra helps in attaining
material success.

6. Mangal: Mangal is a fiery Tattva Graha like Surya, which is essential for vision. Jyotisha shastra is
known as the eye of the Vedas (Veda Chakshu). Jyotish requires strong and pure Agni Tattva in the
horoscope for the person to be able to see the future and become Trikalagna (seer of past, present and
future). Mangal is the graha for logical analysis and problem solving. Pure Mangal makes one a good
logician and a critical thinker. They are able to analyse very complex situation and problems, break
them down into smaller systems and solve them efficiently. Yogas such as Ruchaka, Guru-Mangala etc.
are excellent for the knowledge of Jyotisha shastra.

7. Shani: Shani verily is the Kala itself, time personified. He is also known as Surya Putra Mahakala and
represent the seat of time in Ujjain, in the form of Mahakala Shiva. Shani represents Brahma, the
creator of the universe, and thus the knowledge of creation. Thus a well placed and pure Shani gives
deep knowledge of philosophy and the knowledge of the cycle of creation and annihilation, the
Brahma Vidya. Yogas such as Shani-Guru (Brahma Yoga), Shani-Shukra-Ketu (Tapasvi yoga) are good for
understanding philosophies, including Jyotish shastra.

8. Ketu: Ketu is the graha for intuition and pattern recognition. It indicate ability to solve highly
abstract problems, which can’t be solved by logical deduction indicated by Mangal. Ketu’s problem
solving include processing of huge amount of information and recognition of heuristics and patters.
Ketu does not have a head, hence its thinking is not structured and sequential. However, that makes it
very effective in looking at holistic picture and be able to connect the dots which are not apparent to
the eyes otherwise.

9. Chandra: Chandra being a luminary is also effective in giving some knowledge of the future,
however, unlike Surya, its light is calm and cool, hence instead of giving the ability to look through
darkness, it makes one imaginative and creative. Chandra is not known much for its ability to give
Jyotish ability, but a pure Chandra can complement the abilities of other grahas in giving a reflective
and imaginative mind, who can come up with a good story around anything. Story telling a an art which
can make an astrologer greater than the rest. The Grahas coming under Chandra’s influence through
yuti, drsti or by being placed in Chandra’s Rasi or Chandra’s placement in that graha’s rasi, imbibe the
virtue of reflection, imagination and creativity.

Lets look at the significations of Rahu and Ketu and why they are the key grahas for the knowledge of
Jyotish. According to Maharishi Parashara, when Rahu or Ketu occupy the Karakamsa or the 5th from it,
the native becomes an astrologer, among other things. The principle can be extended to the 2nd house
and the 9th house. In addition to the Karakamsa, the combination can also be seen from the Navamsa
Lagna, Rasi Lagna, Chandra Lagna and the Karaka Lagna. Although the intensity of the results will vary.

 Rahu: Mysticism, magic, strange events, enigmas and excitement, serpents and venomous reptiles,
diseases, scars, courage, adventure, capital execution, foreign faith, stones, mud, travelers, inventors,
lecturers, psychologist, thieves, widowhood, litigation, duplicity, aviators, sepulchres, ant-hills, crack &
crevices, archers, spies, portentous evils, radio, aerial navigation, occult and metaphysical studies,
astrology, south-western direction, inflammable gases, epidemics, violence, corruption, political plots
and exiles.

 Ketu: Religion, astrology, ascetic and renunciation, spirituality and moksha, charms, amulets,
spirit, headless behaviour, bankruptcy, philosophers, selfishness, occult and mystical
disciplines, conflicts, deception and assassinations, vicious tendencies, espionage, secret intrigues and
terrorism.

Rasi Karakatva

There are some Rasis which are involved in conferring the knowledge of astrology and occult. When a
knowledge granting graha (knowledge karaka) occupies in these signs, or a knowledge granting yoga
formation happen in these signs, the intensity of the results get further strengthened. Hence, it is important
to look at the Rasis that support the knowledge of astrology and mysticism. These Rasis and their
significations are-

 Vrshchika: Well, lake or other standing water bodies, mystic, philosopher, astrologer and

occultist, secretive, detective and clever criminals, nurse, chemist, doctor, explorer, navigator, barber,
dentist, mechanic, armed and police-forces, coffin-maker, embalmer, undertaker, life-insurance agent,
businessman etc.

 Kumbha: Burial ground, advisers, legal or social advisors, innovation, electricity, atomic power,
computers automobile and airplane mechanic and television technology, adept in astrology, telepathy
and hypnosis, neurologist, X-ray worker, dealer in medical appliances etc.

The Bhavas

1. 2nd Bhava: 2nd house is extolled in many jyotish classics as one of the key house of knowledge. 2nd
is the house of speech among other things. 2nd house is important in the matter of knowledge perhaps
because, it shows the ability to (1) express the knowledge in real life, through speech and eloquence,
(2) orally transmit the knowledge to others. There are umpteen sutras given in Jataka Tattva regarding
various kinds of knowledge arising out of various yogas forming in the 2nd house or with the 2nd lord.
Maharishi Parashara also says that the yogas for knowledge that are applied to the trines to Karakamsa
can also be applied to the 2nd house. These principles of Karakamsa can be extended to the Navamsa
Lagna, the Rasi Lagna and the Karaka Lagna (sign of Atmakaraka in the Rasi chart). 2nd house the house
of goddess Sarasvati and it is said that Sarasvati resides on the tongue. She is verily called Vagdevi, one
who guides one’s speech.

2. 4th Bhava: 4th house is the house of schooling or formal learning. It is the house of mother, who
teaches us all the skills that are needed for survival in this world. When a yoga is associated with the
4th house, the native learns it from a school or sometimes at home, but in a structured and organised
manner.

3. 5th Bhava: 5th house is the house of psychology and indicates which prevails in the mind. Being 2nd
from the 4th house, it indicates how much learning is accumulated, internalised and can be used for
understanding the world and solving real life problems. Like the 2nd house, the 5th house is the house
of knowledge. Knowledge dawns when the information gathered (in the 4th house) is digested. Verily,
the 5th house is associated with digestion. The yogas forming with the 5th house and the lord have
direct and significant impact on our mind and thinking.

4. 8th Bhava: Knowledge can be classified into two major kinds (1) visible and (2) hidden. The visible
knowledge is practical, accessible to all and are useful in day to day sustenance. Where the visible
knowledge stops, the hidden knowledge starts, that deals with things which are subtle, difficult to
perceive and are accessible to only few. The 8th house of the natural zodiac is Scorpio, which
represents a well, bottom of which is dark, full of mysteries and difficult to access. All the mysteries of
creation lies within the 8th house and the knowledge is available only to those who endeavor very hard
to get it. It requires years of effort and practice to understand the subtle realities.

5. 9th Bhava: 9th house is the house of higher learning that one receives from a real master (Guru). It
is the house of Guru and is the stepping stone for the person to attain the position of a Teacher. Many
get access to knowledge, but only some attain mastery and become capable of teaching the knowledge
to others. 5th and 9th are closely related because (1) 9th and 5th are Bhavat Bhavam for each other,
(2) while 9th is the place of teacher, 5th is for student. Without student, what is the use of being a
Teacher. Hence, both these houses need to be judged together to see whether the native becomes a
teacher of the subject. Also, the knowledge granting yoga should have some connection with the 9th
house, for the person to be able to teach that knowledge, else, the knowledge stays within.

6. 10th Bhava: 10th house is the house of action, livelihood, social status and leadership skills. When a
knowledge yoga formation happens in the 10th house, this means that the native may become a
practitioner of that knowledge and earn livelihood using that. There are many capable and outstanding
astrologers, but they may remain researchers in this field, and not use the knowledge to earn their
livelihood. There are however many who use their half baked knowledge and earn unlimited wealth.
Whether or not someone will earn from a knowledge also needs to be seen with respect to the 11th
house, as all income and gains comes from that house. When the knowledge yoga is involved with the
10th house, and the 10th house, its lord and the Lagna, Lagna lord are strong, the native can attain
worldwide fame pertaining to that knowledge. The native may be in a commanding position to
command many people, by becoming a head of an institution. Why? 10th house is a Throne where the
king sits and command over many people. 10th house is the house of leadership from where the
leaders lead the common men.

7. 11th Bhava: 11th house is not only the house of gains, but also a key house of learning of occult
knowledge. Why? Because it is the 4th house of learning from the 8th house.

8. 12th Bhava: 12th is the generally known as the house expenditure and loss. However, it is also the
house of freedom, it makes one free from all the material bondages and takes the mind beyond.
Hence, this can also be called the house of intuition. In the natural zodiac, this house is ruled by
Devaguru Brhaspati and is the sign of Mulatrikona of Ketu. Ketu is the significator of intuition, being a
graha without head. Intuition is the connection one establishes with the unknown and gets isights,
knowledge and information in flashes. One can call it 6th sense, gut feeling, a strong feeling which one
feels is true, but can’t explain. This is extremely important in the matters of Jyotish as we need to be
connected to the divine, to get his message. We need to be a channel for the divine message.

The Sutras from Jyotish Classics

2nd lord and Budha are strong

Jataka Tattva. 3.5.47. When the Dhanesha is strong, and Budha is placed in Kendra, Kona or Labha the
native becomes best among astrologers.

Hindu Predictive Astrology (BV Raman): Mercury in a quadrant and the 2nd lord powerfully situated,
makes one proficient in Astrology.

Budha is the karaka for mantra Shastra, mathematics, astronomy and astrology. 2H governs over mastery
over a knowledge area, its application in daily life and the ability to orally transmit the knowledge. This
condition has three parts (1) 2nd lord must be strong through good Rasi and Bhava placement. Placement in
Uccha, Sva and Mitra Rasi makes it strong. Similarly Kendras are the giver of strength, while Konas are the
giver of blessings. Labha should also be included in the picture as all grahas give gains irrespective of their
sign placements in the 11th house. (2) Budha, being the Karaka must be strong by being placed in a Kendra,
Kona or Labha, devoid of any malefic conjunctions or aspects. Budha must not be under papa-kartari. (3)
Budha must have some connection with the 2nd house.

The connection between Budha and the 2nd house can be established in this manner-

1. Budha in the 2nd house

2. Budha aspects the 2nd house

3. 2nd lord conjoined with Budha

4. 2nd lord aspected by Budha or they are in mutual aspect

5. 2nd lord and Budha exchanged signs

6. 2nd lord in a sign owned by Budha

7. Budha aspects the sign own by the 2nd lord

The more the associations are between the 2nd lord and Budha, the stronger is the ability of Budha to grant
the knowledge of Jyotisha shastra (or astronomy, mathematics etc.) to the native.

The best situation is when, Budha while connected with the 2nd lord through one of more means, is also
under the influence of Guru by conjunction or aspect. Budha-Guru yoga is one of the finest, as the learning
and inquisitive mind of Budha is guided in the right direction. Budha is the Shisya (disciple) while Guru is the
Teacher. When they come into a sambandha, there is free flow of knowledge from Guru to Budha. If Guru
does not influence Budha, even then the native can be good astrologer, but his ability to guide people will
be limited. Association with Guru gives a spiritual dimension to the whole picture.

The yoga need to be seen from both the Janma Lagna and the Janma Rasi. The yoga is strong if it happens
from both the Janma Rasi and Janma Lagna and is relatively weaker if it happens with reference to just one
of them.

Budha in the 10th House

Hindu Predictive Astrology: Mercury occupies the 10th house makes one a professor in religious philosophy,
astrology, mathematical sciences, teacher, judge etc.

10th house from both the Lagna and the Chandra Lagna need to be seen for work, action, livelihood, status,
position, fame etc. When Budha has some association with the 10th house, by being (1) placed there, (2)
conjoined the 2nd lord, (3) become the dispositor of the 10th lord, (4) become the navamsa dispositor of
the 10th lord, there is a possibility that the native takes Astrology and allied subjects as his profession.

Many Jyotish classics say that the Navamsa Dispositor of the 10th lord from Chandra is one of the strongest
determinant of profession. Hence, any association of Budha with this graha can prompt the native take up
Jyotish as the means of livelihood. There are many who are excellent Jyotishis by the virtue of association of
the 2nd house / 2nd lord with Budha and Guru, but not all of them pursue this as their profession. For using
Jyotish as profession, there needs to be some connection with the 10th house.

Strong Guru in the 2nd house

Jataka Tattva. 3.5.48. When Guru is Uccha and is placed in Dhana Sthana, the native is best among
astrologers.

In addition of association of Budha with the 2nd house/ 2nd lord, association of Guru with the 2nd can also
make the native a good astrologer, provided Guru is strong. However, along with this combination, if 2nd
lord and Budha are also strong, and there is some association of Budha with the 2nd house/ 2nd lord, the
native is bound to become astrologer par excellence.

2nd lord in a Satya Peetha aspected by Guru

In a horoscope, there are two places of absolute Truth where the illusion (maya) can’t influence. They are
the Lagna and the 7th house, and are known as the Satya Peetha (seat of truth). This is why, the Arudha of a
Bhava can’t fall in the Lagna and the 7th house from the Bhava. When the 2nd lord occupies one of the
Satya Peetha i.e., Lagna or the 7th house, and simultaneously aspected by Guru, the native attains Vak-
Siddhi. Guru represents the wish of god in the horoscope and is the karaka for truthfulness. Hence, when
Guru aspects such 2nd lord, what comes out of his mouth can’t be untrue.

However, regarding the aspect of Guru on the 2nd house, if the Aspect is through Graha Drsti, the Vak-
Siddhi is likely to be triggered when a Guru comes and blesses the native. However, if Guru conjoins or
aspects the 2nd lord by Rasi Drsti, the siddhi is supposed to be there from birth. Usually the graha drsti is
conditional, and requires a trigger for the Drsti to be effective.

Everyone who are Vak-siddhas don’t need to be astrologers. It just happens that whatever they say comes
out to be true, especially the ones which are said spontaneously, without much prior thoughts. However, if
this combination is present in the horoscope of Astrologers, they can become best of astrologers, as
whatever they say after analysing an horoscope, it is not likely to fail.

Budha and Shukra in the 2nd or 3rd house

Jataka Tattva. 3.5.46. Budha and Shukra in the 3rd or the 2nd house make one the best among
Jyotishshastris (gnaachau sottharthagau jyotirvidaam shresthah..)

When Budha and Shukra are jointly or separately placed in the 2nd or the 3rd house, the native becomes
excellent in Jyotish. 3rd house is the house of Skills, Talent and communication. While Budha is the giver of
knowledge in Jyotish, Shukra is the giver of knowledge of various Shastras (Sarva-Shastra Pravaktaram).
Budha and Shukra are intimate friends, hence, when Budha and Shukra occupy the 2nd and 3rd house
jointly or separately, they support each other. It is known that when grahas occupy the 2nd or 12th from
each other, they become temporal friends as per compound relationship principles. Hence, the ideal
situation is occupation of Shukra and Budha are to be placed separately. When Grahas conjoin, usually it
also comes with some tension, as the grahas encroach in to each others personal space.

Strong Guru and Shukra

Kundali Darpan. Guru in Kendra or Trikona and Shukra placed in exaltation makes the native an expert
mathematician.

Mathematics is an integral component of Jyotish. There are many combination for skills in mathematics, but
one key skills that also supports knowledge of Astrology is having both Guru and Shukra placed in strength.
In this combination, both Guru and Shukra confer the knowledge of both Mathematics, Astrology and
Metaphysics. However, having other combinations for Astrology makes it ideal for outstanding Astrologers.

2nd lord in the 11th House

Mansagari 3.24. When 2L is in the 11H, the native becomes adept in the affairs of the Graha (i.e.,
astronomy, astrology, cosmology etc.), wealthy, famous, looks after own community and other people in
general.

The importance of the 11th house has been mentioned before. 11th house is not only the house of gain,
but it also has some more abilities i.e., (1) It is the 4th house from the 8th house i.e., occult learning, (2)
From here as graha can connect with the 5th house through aspect. 5th house is the house of speculation,
reflection, planning and knowledge.
This particular combination not only makes one skilled in the science of planets, but also gives many other
good things such as wealth, fame and make him a family man with a big heart. 2nd house is also the house
of family and wealth (kutumba and dhana), hence its placement in the house of gain can come with other
great things in life. Even better, when the 2nd lord conjoin with the 9th lord, or aspected by Guru or both.

Retrograde Budha in the 7th house

Kundali Darpan. When Budha being the 2nd lord is under benefic aspects or when retrograde Budha is
placed in the 7H, the native is a mathematician, astronomer or astrologer.

It is not clear why Retrograde Budha in the 7th house makes one a mathematician, astronomer or
astrologer. This needs to be verified.

afflicted by a Tamas Graha. Even debilitated Jupiter in the 2H cause increase of wealth. Jupiter gives
controlled wealth as excessive wealth give way to vices. Influence of Rajas Graha Mercury or Venus give
more wealth. (2) Natural year of Jupiter is 16th year. Thus increase of wealth happens from 16th years. (3)
Sweet speech (2H) as Jupiter rules madhura rasa (sweet taste). Good orator, advisor, truthful speech,
committed to promises etc. Mars cause debility of Jupiter, hence Mars’s affliction (or in Mars’s signs) cause
speech defects or abusive speech. (4) Good for higher education, higher knowledge. This is fortified when
influenced by other Sattva or Rajas Graha. Sattva = for selfless purpose, Rajas = selfish purpose. (5) Tamas
affliction obstacles in education, gain wealth from incorrect means (stealing), corruption, abusive speech,
given to vices, (6) 2H is Kula (Lineage) Afflicted Jupiter cause destruction to lineage i.e., devoid of Sons,
even after multiple marriages (2H). (7) Earning wealth from Jupiterian sources: Religious activities
(priesthood), Teaching, Astrology, Judge, Law and jurisprudence, Bank, serve the ruler as an advisor or a
minister. (8) In natural zodiac 9L in the 2H is 6H from 9H indicate discord with father. (9) Jupiter is the Guru
and is masculine. Hence it gives good results when placed in odd signs i.e, Fiery or Airy signs. (10) Financial
distress in fixed signs especially in Ta (earth) or Sc (water).

Mars in the 2nd house can cause failures in predictions

Bhrigu Sutras. Mars in 2H. Devoid of learning, financial gains (10); if conjoined with 6th lord — defective
eye sight (netra viparitam) (11); if aspected by benefics — the evils (defective eye-sight etc) are annulled
(12); if exalted or placed in own sign– highly learned (13); had good eye sight (14); if conjoined with malefics
or placed in a malefic (inimical) sign or aspected by malefics — suffer eye diseases (15).

Notes: (1) Native is not a scholar, (2) Fiery or own sign: Danger to spouse. May need to marry again for
taking care of children, (3) Fiery sign:Inclined towards becoming rich very fast. Hence attracted towards
gambling, lottery, race, betting and such vices. (4) Earthy signs: Spouse does not die but there is fights with
the spouse, so home devoid of domestic happiness. (5) Airy signs: Amass much wealth, good for doctors
and lawyers. In the horoscopes of astrologers this combination may make many predictions not come
true, unless Mars is under the influence of a Shubha graha, specifically Guru.
Key Thoughts: (1) Mars debilitates Jupiter, hence in the 2H does not make one a scholar (master in any one
discipline). Moon does as it exalts Jupiter. (2) Mars when exalted (Sattva Guna) or in own sign (blessings of
Tattva devata) can give high learning as Tamas is transformed to Sattva.(3) Fiery and Airy sign promote
increase of wealth as they move upwards. They cause the native to become rich very fast, They may employ
Tamas means such as gambling, betting etc. (4) 2H is for speech. Tamas graha can make speech untruthful,
hence predictions by astrologers may not come true. (5) 2H is the house of 2nd marriage being 8H from 7H
of marriage. Mars in Fiery signs or Scorpio can indicate danger of spouse and re-marriage. In Earthy signs, it
causes marital discord and disturbances. Why? Because Martian signs are opposite to Venus’s signs in
natural zodiac. Mars is Brahmacharya while Venus is for relationships. (6) Good placement for those who
earn from Surgery and Battles (legal battles) especially in airy signs (intellectuals) (7) 2H is for right eye
(male) and left eye for females. Tamas Graha placed with the 6L (diseases) can cause eye diseases. Debility
or other afflictions can also cause eye diseases, especially when 2L is weak. If not afflicted, it can give good
eye sight (fire tattva).

Specific yogas granting knowledge of Astrology

1. Mangal-Shukra

2. Chandra-Shukra-Shani

3. Surya in Mithuna Rasi (Surya in Mithuna Navamsa is even better)

4. Chandra in Dhanu Rasi aspected by Budha

5. Chandra in Simha Navamsa aspected by Budha

6. Guru in Budha’s Rasi aspected by Budha

7. Surya and Mangal conjoin in the 10th from Chandra

Saravali 15.15. Mangal-Shukra yoga. The native is worshipped, is chief among his men, is a mathematician
or astrologer, and is fond of gambling, untruth etc.

Saravali 16.25. Chandra-Shukra-Shani yoga. The native is a writer, reader of books, priest, endowed with
merits of past birth and is an astrologer.

Saravali 22.18–19. Surya in Mithuna Rasi. The native is a scholar, sweet in speech, affectionate, good in
conduct, expert in profound knowledge and the Śāstras, is exceedingly affluent, liberal, skilful,
an astrologer. However, is mediocre in appearance, have two mothers, is fortunate and modest.

Saravali 23.59–64. Chandra in Dhanu Rasi aspected by Budha. The native has many servants, is an
expert astrologer and artist, and also a skilful dancer.

Saravali 24.13–15. Chandra in Simha Navamsa aspected by Budha. The native is an astrologer, fond of
heroic history (e.g. Mahabharata) and is very affluent.
Saravali 27.37–42. Guru in Budha’s sign aspected by Budha. The native is a skilful astrologer, have many
children and wives, an exponent of many kinds of aphorisms and precepts, and is greatly eloquent.

Saravali 33.14–18. Surya conjoining Mangal in 10th from Chandra. The native believes in hard work
(karmakaran), suffers severely from cough or consumption, is an astrologer and an expert in the science of
marks and signs and also logic.

Rahu/ Ketu granting the knowledge of Astrology

BPHS 32.41–45. If Guru and Candra are in Karakamsa, or the 5th thereof, the native will be an author.
Śukra will make one an ordinary writer, while Budha will indicate, that the writing skills are less than those
of an ordinary writer. Should Guru be alone, one will be a knower of everything, be a writer and be versed in
Vedas and Vedanta philosophy, but not an oratorian, or a grammarian. Mangal denotes a logician, Budha a
Mimamsaka, Shani indicates, that one is dull-witted in the assembly, Surya denotes, that one is a musician,
Candra denotes a follower of Sankhya philosophy and indicates, that one is versed in rhetorics and
singing. Ketu or Rahu denotes, that one is a Jyotishi. Should Guru (and other grahas) be related to the
positions of Karakamsa, or the 5th from there, while the Karakamsa is caused by others than him, the
effects, as stated, will effectively come to pass. Some say, that the 2nd from Karakamsa should also be
similarly considered.

Maharishi Parashara gave only one combination in his magnum opus Brihat Parashari Hora Shastra. He says,
when Rahu or Ketu occupy the Karakamsa or the 5th from it, the native becomes an astrologer.

Karakamsa is the Navamsa (Amsa) position of the Atmakaraka (karaka) Graha. It is a join of two worlds
Karaka+Amsa, meaning the amsa of the Karaka. Hence, there is no ambiguity of the meaning of the word
Karakamsa.

Rahu and Ketu are the key grahas for Astrology no doubt, but their ways of working are different, as
mentioned above. Hence, the type of analysis they will give will be very different. While Rahu makes one
psychic and the ability to channelise psychic energy for knowing the unknown, Ketu uses intuition, pattern
recognition, and abstract mathematics to know. Ketu’s placement in the said placed can definitely make the
person very good in dealing with numbers i.e., numerology.

Combinations given by Prof. SS Chatterjee

Based on his experiences Prof. Chatterjee mentioned few combinations in his book, Houses 8th and 3rd in
Advanced Astrology. According to him 8th house / 8th lord play a major role in achieving proficiency in
Astrology, which I fully agree!

The key combinations given by him are:

1. Influence of Rahu and Guru on the 2nd house and the 10th house.

2. Exchange of lords of 2nd and 10th houses.

3. Presence of Budha in a Kendra, particularly the 10th house.

4. Surya in the 5th house.

5. Budhaditya Yoga in the 2nd or the 5th house.

6. From Janma Rasi or Janma Lagna, the 8th house should have conjunction or aspect from Shukra,
Rahu or Guru.

7. The natural 8th house of the zodiac, Scorpio should have conjunction or aspect from Shukra, Rahu
or Guru.

Final thoughts and conclusion

There are many yogas to in Jyotish shastras to give interests in Jyotish. When there is any connection of
Budha with the Lagna and its trine, the native will have some level of interests in this discipline. However,
only few develop the need to understand and attain proficiency in this discipline, usually those who have
strong connection of Budha with the 2nd house. When the 2nd lord is strong, Budha associated with the
2nd house and aspected by Guru, the native attains very high proficiency. There are many other
combinations pertaining to the 2nd house, Budha and Guru, which can give proficiency. However, to be
known as a great astrologer, one need to have a very strong Lagna, and the 10th house. 8th house being
the house of occult when gets involved in the combination, especially the 5th house of psychology, the
native is able to establish connection with the divine consciousness and able to channelize the divine
knowledge through psychic abilities. However, the 8th house influence does not come with a price as it can
be very destructive to the material happiness. 8th house can bring sanyasa and renunciation to the native’s
psychology, when having strong connection with the 5th house. If afflicted, this combination also prompt
one to delve in the darker sides of things and bring ailments such as madness or unstable mind. Hence, a
delicate balance need to be maintained by having aspect of strong and unadulterated naisargika Shubha
grahas.

BPHS 24.56. If Putra’s Lord is in Randhra Bhava, the native will not have much progenic happiness, be
troubled by cough and pulmonary disorders, be given to anger and be devoid of happiness.

BPHS 24.89. If Randhra’s Lord is in Putra Bhava, the native will be dull witted, will have limited number of
children, be long-lived and wealthy.

According to Maharishi Parashara, it can affect one’s children and can cause health troubles and miseries. It
is also better to have the 8th lord in the 5th house, than 5th lord going to the 8th house. In either case, it is
best to have aspect of a natural benefic to neutralise the poison of the 8th lord. If the 8th lord is weak and
afflicted, it can cause immense miseries that can be redeemed. We can see this in real life, where many
outstanding Jyotishis are very poor and find it difficult to meet their ends. 8th house can break many good
yogas in a horoscope, hence need to be carefully dealt with. Only when Surya or Chandra attain the 8th
lordship, i.e., for Dhanu and Makara Lagna, they are free from the blemish associated with the 8th lordship.
Also, for Mesha and Tula Lagnas, where the 8th lord is also the Lagna lord, the blemish is removed when
they occupy their own Sign, i.e., Lagna or the 8th house. In all cases however, it is ideal have aspect of
natural shubha grahas Guru, Shukra, Shukla paksha Chandra and well associated Budha on the 8th house,
for the suffering to be less. Also, Chandra should never occupy the 8th house. Budha’s occupation of the 8th
house is considered to be good.
IN THE NEXT PART OF THE ARTICLE, I WILL ILLUSTRATE THESE PRINCIPLES WITH THE HELP OF CHARTS OF
FEW GREAT ASTROLOGERS.

- "O Lord Ganesha, of Curved Trunk, and

Massive Body, With the Brilliance of a Million
Suns, Bless me with NO-Obstacles in my
endeavors, Always."
Without blessings of Lord Ganesha no-one can become a good astrologer.
Jupiter is the Guru, the abundance of knowledge and wisdom, but all the
knowledge is useless if not communicated efficiently.

Imagine a very learned Scholar, blessed strongly by Lord Guru. He has read
every scripture and book ever written and in the process has mastered
astrology. He is admired for his intelligence and knowledge, for he seems to
know-it-all. One fine trait he lacks though, is how to communicate his
surplus knowledge, to the seekers of astrology. Afflicted Mercury bereaves
him of Lord Ganesha's blessing. Either he sugar coats his predictions, which
do no good to the native OR he is too blunt and careless in his interactions.
Both will only lead him to a bad reputation. Now Imagine if he is also able
to communicate effectively, nothing can stop him from becoming a
renowned astrologer.

"Om Gam Ganpataye Namaha"

Few basic requirements to become a good astrologer -

 Required Planetary Combinations.

 Crisp and Clear Communication.
 'Power of intuition' gives an edge.
 Rational approach.
Planetary Combinations -

Lets first understand the houses (Bhava) linked to the divine science.

First House -  'Tanu Bhava' in sanskrit, is the house of self, personality,

physical constitution and how the person feels about self. How others rate
or consider him is from Arudha lagna, so first house is basically about self-
image. For analyzing person's mental inclination or likes/dislikes, fifth house
also needs to be taken in account.

Eighth house -  'Randhra Bhava' in sanskrit, is the most dreaded house in

Jyotish, but also most important house for an astrologer. The house of
mystery and  psychic abilities, but infamous for death-alike experiences,
rebirth, major-transformations, catastrophe and Tantra related activities.
Same house also indicated inheritance, enlightenment, purification, healing
and spiritual liberation. It is the house of healers, and astrologers in
aesthetic sense are the 'healers'.

Tenth house - 'Karma Bhava' is sanskrit, the house of your deeds, public
image, social standing, mass dealings, public reputation, leadership,
responsibility, duty and principles. Your profession and professional growth
is studied from the house.

These three house play major role in becoming a good astrologer. The gains
from any profession is studied from your eleventh house, the house of
achievements and 'fulfillment of desires'. For accumulated wealth from any
profession, second house is considered.

Fifth house of creativity and mental inclination, and twelfth house of afterlife
and spirits are also sometimes taken into consideration. Astrologers will
exceptional psychic abilities have profound twelfth house.

If you haven't deciphered by now and still waiting for the magic words, then
here they are - Relation between the Lagna (or Lord), Eighth (or lord) and
tenth (or Lord) house indicate inclination for astrology and occult sciences,
both as a hobby and profession. Recognition and success in any profession
requires a strong tenth house and monetary benefits can be seen from
eleventh house.

Signs that resonate with occultism -

Gemini - Lorded by Mercury, is the most intellectual sign and strong and
influential Gemini sign in horoscope makes good astrologer. Their keen
sense of judgement, rational approach and developed investigation
capabilities gives them an edge.

Aquarius - Extremely intelligent sign and unassuming by nature, they are

known for their ability to be detached from material world. Being the
eleventh sign in natural zodiac, they possess amazing intuition quality.

Pisces - Twelfth in natural zodiac are naturally blessed with the power of
intuition, interest in religion, philosophy and related studies.

Crisp and clear communication -

The karaka planet for both astrology and communication is Mercury, the
planet for 'Budhi' or intelligence. The planet of intellect is ruled by Lord
Ganesha, who is THE source of true intellect.

Powerful, unafflicted and well positioned Mercury, in an angular house,

trine, second, third or eleventh house is considered good placement for an
astrologer. Mercury under influence of Sun, Jupiter or Saturn, by
conjunction or aspect could be extremely benefic for an astrologer. Saturn’s
influence over Mercury gives a smart twist to mercurial intelligence,
simultaneously making the astrologer patient and steady in his dealings.  As
per scriptures, combined influence of Saturn and Jupiter is supposed to be
excellent.

Placement of Jupiter, the natural karaka for intuition, Vedic knowledge and
wisdom is also important for an astrologer. Like Mercury, Jupiter is also
desired to be positioned in favorable houses like angular houses, trines,
second or eleventh house. Yoga or aspect between Mercury and Jupiter is
desired placement in an astrologer’s horoscope, since it motivates learner to
develop interest and achieve substantial knowledge. The point to note here
is that Mercury shouldn’t be in dwirdasa (2-12) or shashtashtama (6-8) to
Guru which blots the basic potential of the horoscope to become an
astrologer, even with other strong combinations.

Influence of Mars, Ketu and Rahu over Mercury is supposed to add its own
flavors but sometimes considered destructive for Vedic learning. Influence
of waning Moon or Venus adds its own materialistic flavor, hence undesired.

Second house is the house of communication, so lord of second house

unafflicted and well placed helps one with clear expression of mind. Mercury
placed in second, in own of friend's house, makes one very influential
speaker. Second lord under influence of Mercury and unafflicted Jupiter
could grant one exceptional and fluent communication skills. Venus
influence adds it's own flavor, sometimes of sycophantism if afflicted.
Malefic influence on second house and lord is highly undesirable, as it could
give one harsh tongue, the effortless trait for making enemies.

"The tongue is like a sharp knife, kills without drawing blood" - Buddha

Power of Intuition -

Moon and Ketu are also significant planets in an astrologer’s horoscope, as

they bless the individual with psychic powers. Sometimes looking beyond
the obvious is what makes a great astrologer. In astrology, 2 and 2 need
not necessarily be equal to 4, the could be 1 or 3 or anything. That's why
computer generated charts are hardly accurate with predictions. I
encourage everyone to always get a human analysis done, if they really
wish for accurate predictions.

Moon - The karaka for mind and the mental disposition of an astrologer,
hence an unafflicted Moon is extremely important for doing objective
analysis of birth chart. Moon should be waxing and not in dwirdasha (2-12)
or shatashtama (6-8) from the Sun. Jupiter's aspect, conjunction or any
influence through nakshatra blesses the individual with wisdom and a
deeper insight. Malefic influences on the other hand  could prove
detrimental.

Ketu - The karaka for moksha and spirituality, blesses the astrologer with
intrinsic psychic abilities, specially when placed in Lagna. Ketu is a headless
body, so its functioning is pretty much dependent of its conjunct planets
and lords. Other factors equal, Ketu in first, third, ninth, eleventh and
twelfth house is considered a good placement, specially with an aspect of
unafflicted Jupiter. Ketu being posited alone is always good, since under
influence by yoga or aspect, it loses its natural tendency.
Eleventh house is the house of intuition so Moon, Mercury or Ketu posited
there, with aspect of Guru is the best position.

Rational Approach -

'Where are you born' and 'To whom are you born' are two factors that play
a significant role is deciding how your future will unfold. Birth charts are
created based on 'when are you born', the moment believed to hold
valuable information regarding the fate and characteristics of the individual.
But while analyzing birth chart, due importance should be given to other
two factors as well.

For example - Two births take place around the same town, date and time;
one in a mansion and other in slums. Their birth chart will be similar, but
their life will be anything but similar. There life will unfold in similar fashion,
but the magnitude will be totally opposite.

Desh Kaal and Paatra, the very fundamentals of Astrology are conveniently
ignored by many traditional astrologers. Desh is residence or country, Kaal
is time and Paatra is the character or the individual.
Western countries are not so strong-headed when it comes to divorces.
Vedic astrology has recently become infamous for its negative predictions,
primarily to entice clients and earn from remedial measures.

Mangal dosha and Kalsarp dosha are two most misused concepts by
astrologers instigate fear. Why ? - I will leave that to your judgement.

Houses – The most important houses to become a successful astrologer is your 1st(Personality), 2nd (Speech,
values, mathematical ability), 3rd (Skills), 5th (Intelligence, mantras & past life punyas), 8th (Occult &
research), 9th (Spiritual progress, luck, Guru),10th (Karma sthan, image in public ) & 11th (Intuition) in
hororscope
Planets – The planets responsible in the order are Mercury (Intelligence & speech), Jupiter (Wisdom & Gurus),
Venus (Shukracharya’s mastery over Sanjeevani ), Moon (Mind), Saturn (Karaka of 8th House) & Ketu (Psychic
& past life karmas)
Zodiac signs – Among the zodiac signs Gemini, Scorpio, Aquarius & Pisces rules the roost in astrology. As we
know Scorpio is the most intense, mysterious, secretive occult sign which is co ruled by three planets Ketu,
Mars & outer planet Pluto. Aquarius is the highest of airy sign which belongs to sharp & deep thinkers of the
world and co-ruled by Rahu, Saturn & outer planet Uranus, it is also being said that Lord Shiva presides in this
sign. Pisces is the deepest water in the hororscope, it is the most intuitive & religious sign, which is also
called the gateway to the completion, enlightenment & liberation ruled by the Wise planet Jupiter.
Nakshatras – We will discuss those Nakshatras which have got the potential or infuses the qualities in the
native, imperative to become a successful astrologer. This means a person’s ASC or ASC lord or Moon or even
Jupiter/Mercury if any ways (depending on the houses as well) gets correlated with the below mentioned
Nakshatras, it will enhance his chances

Ashwini (Being ruled by deity Ashwini kumars (Physician to the Gods) who supposed to have knowledge of all
herbs on the physical & astral plane and are supposed to possess supernatural powers to cure any disease or
fix any problem. They are considered so powerful that they can make the old become young and even bring
the dead back to life
Bharani (Rulership of Venus & extreme ferocious nature carries with it the occult potential)
Punarvasu – Ruled by Jupiter & related to all kinds of spiritual practices
Magha – Rulership of Ketu and association with many negative astral entities like Bhootas, pretas & pishachas
used in order to win over the typical Magha goals – power, status & fame
Hasta – Being the 13th Nakshatra, 13 is the number which Hasta relates to. It is common knowledge that 13 is
a peculiar number associated with the occult along with its connection with Rahu, the planet of Maya, magic
and trickery
Anuradha — It is a typical occult Nakshatra, which is a decoder of the secret functioning of the universe.
Mars, Saturn, Pluto & Ketu are the planets connected to this Nakshatra
Mula – Rulership of Ketu confers magical powers in this Nakshatra
Purvashadha – Rulership of Venus & Jupiter makes it function well on real occult attainments
Dhanistha – Presided over by a group of eight Gods called “Vasus”. They carry with them the energies of
different Nakshatras, giving them the mastery over the material plane and functioning of the universal mind
Shatabhisha – The archetype healers of Vedic astrology, also known as “the hundred physicians”

Divisional charts

Its important to look at the D-3, D-9, D-10, D-24 & D-60 charts as well to ensure the intellectual, instinctive &
spiritual bent of the person. As D-3 chart tells about the possessed skills, D-9 being the ninth division of the
9th house of natal chart tells about the spiritual & dharmic inclinations, D-10 tells about our fame & actions
in society, D-24 tells about our education, learning & knowledge & lastly D-60 is studied for Upasana, Jap,
religious rites & very fine analysis of planetary auspiciousness and strength

Although there can be many combinations but the most promising one remains to be the combination
between Asc, 8th & 10th houses in natal chart which promises that an individual will prosper in occult
sciences or will make a living out of it.

So, we can say that whenever above mentioned planets, zodiac signs, nakshatras & houses come in sync with
each other a successful astrologer is born
Aim of becoming a successful astrologer and serving mankind is a dream of
many, but not everyone gets success. But why? Where they lack? Get to know
your chances of becoming an astrologer? Then, read this article, by expert
astrologer ‘Acharya Raman’.

In reader-2, Shree KSK has laid down some points toward the profession of an
astrologer. I will be sharing some horoscopes of astrologers who are doing KP
and Non KP astrology without their names. Some are well renowned and some
are trying to be like them. This article will help you a lot in deciding about your
career options, if astrology is one of them. With no offence to anyone, I have
found in my journey of life, that there are basically following types of astrologers:

1. One who know nothing about astrology, but just fool people with
malefic planets like Rahu - Ketu, Saturn and Mars.
2. Those who know astrology, but become stone sellers and earn commissions
from it.
3. Those who know astrology, but use it to manipulate things in their favor.
4. Those who are selflessly doing public service by giving their knowledge
freely to one and all with full devotion and do not cheat people.
It is your own destiny and Dasha which takes you to one of these people. As Shree
KSK had said in his Reader-2 Page-54- “God will always be alert and will be
giving wonderful guidance to the astrologer to predict correctly, if those who
consult him would have satisfactorily done virtuous deeds in the previous birth.
Only those who had committed serious sins in the last birth will be disappointed
in this birth in every walk of life. Even able astrologers will have misguiding facts,
which they have to use as the basis, so that their calculation will go wrong and
their prediction will fail. Probably the chart given to the astrologer may be casted
by a quack and may be incorrect. Or the unluckiest querist would have mentioned
16. The astrologer would have misheard it as 60, worked and offered a prediction
which failed finally. Mishearing is God`s action which is due to the querist`s
Karma (deed). Thus, in everything the divine force will work. God neither gives
proper guidance to him nor allows the astrologer to give correct prediction in his
case alone, as he was a great sinner and he has to be disappointed in everything,
including the prediction of the expert astrologers.”

“One can consult any astrologer. Only when the native and the astrologer have
favorable time, the astrologer will be able to give correct prediction to him. But if
their time is unfavorable, everything will go wrong and the party cannot have
peace of mind. Good actions alone will yield desirable results. Thus, astrology
reminds one to do good alone, which will surely offer peace of mind. No where in
Christian scriptures, astrology is disapproved. Nowhere it is forbidden. But it
warns us to its proper use.”

One can be an astrologer, if one’s horoscope satisfies many of the following

conditions

1. Western scholars are of opinion that Saturn and Moon give immense

appetite to learn astrology, especially when they are in 1, 3, 9 or 10 Bhava
(house).
2. Good aspects and connection between Jupiter, Mercury, Uranus assist one
to consider deeply, judge properly and interpret correctly.
3. Mars beneficial aspect to those planets gives the astrologer the
argumentative faculty, the desire to succeed in the material field and to lead in all
pursuits.
4. Only when Moon and Mercury have harmonious aspects, one can have clear
exposition, proper wording, good vocabulary and intuition.
5. Saturn and Mercury forming good aspects in one’s chart give concentration
and depth of thought. The native will be exact, precise and methodical. He will be
a good mathematician with competence on calculations.
6. Venus conjoined with Uranus can give one the desire to learn astrology. A
few may have titles conferred on them, if Venus and Uranus received good
aspects from Saturn, Moon and Jupiter.
7. Good aspect to Jupiter from other planets removes worries and allows one
to pray to God. One can have the divine grace and intuition.
8. Lords of 2, 9, 11 forming good aspects mutually among themselves and with
the great benefic Jupiter will offer the most desirable results to the astrologer and
to the consultant.
9. Mercury being the significator of angular houses, Venus as significator of 5,
9 or 2 and Lord of 2 strongly connected with Mercury or venus.
These are some of the combinations given by Shree KSK in his Reader 2 and 3.

Thus, we see that the requisites are fulfilled in almost all the charts to a great
extent in above cases. But some are KP, some are traditional, some are quacks. If
you have the inner urge to pursue and make astrology as a full time career option,
you can check your chart on the given parameters and move ahead in life with
will and determination. I have also found that people born in Satabhisha -2 are
having liking for astrology and occult. Whether they are able to pursue it as a
career is a different matter. If you do decide to make astrology as a career option,
it is my sincere advice that do it for free or take minimum charges in the
beginning and prove your calibre first. Don’t run after money, money will come if
it is destined but keep helping people with correct logical and religious bent of
mind. Remember - if you will give wrong advice and start selling stones and
performing Rahu-Ketu and, Mars remedies, you are going to land in big trouble
in your last days.
