The Classification Essay
A classification essay is written by organizing or dividing materials into specific categories. When writing a
classification essay, it is necessary to choose a topic that can be dissected into smaller or more defined groups
that all relate to the topic’s classification.
How to write a Classification Essay:
1. What is the topic? What items are you going to classify?
A classification essay means you are classifying, which is another way of saying that you are sticking things
into their respective categories. Think about a topic that can at least be divided into three different
categories.
Consider how you can group the items or concepts in a way that makes sense to you. The best way to pick a
topic is to start with a broad parent category that has lots of diversity within it.
Ideas and Explanations
1. Food. This is one of the easiest subjects to classify. You could classify food into national cuisine types
like Italian, Indian, and Chilean. Or, you could classify food into Breakfast foods, Lunch foods, and
Dinner foods. Another approach is to classify foods into their nutritional categories such as Fats,
Carbohydrates, and Proteins. You could even do Sweet foods, Spicy foods, and Salty foods. With food
as a parent topic, your options for classification are nearly limitless!
2. Animals. Animal subjects are also easy to classify because of the great diversity in the animal kingdom.
For example, you could classify animals according to their main classes of mammal, bird, and reptile. You
could also write about different species within the same class such as Shore Birds, Birds of Prey, and
Songbirds. As with food, the animal parent group offers a lot of opportunity for categorization.
3. Music. Because of the vast variety of music around the world, music categories are also easy for you to
write about. Consider classifying European music according to historical epoch: The Renaissance,
Classical, and Modern periods. Or, you could classify music into popular genres like rock, pop, and jazz.
You might even be able to classify each specific genre into sub-categories like dividing the rock category
into punk, metal, and blues-rock.
Example Outline:
I. Introduction
A. Food is one of the most important aspects of surviving and thriving to human beings.
B. Because of the multicultural nature of the world’s populations, there have emerged different categories
of food all around the world.
Thesis: The three main categories of food known around the world are Chinese food, Mexican food, and
Italian food.
II. Category 1: Chinese food is one of the most widespread kind of food around the world.
A. Item 1: Reasons for being well known
B. Item 2: Famous Chinese dishes.
C. Item 3: Famous Chinese restaurants around the world.
III. Category 2: Although Chinese food is taking the lead, Mexican food is also very famous around the
world
A. Item 1: Brief overview of Mexican food
B. Item 2: Characteristics of Mexican food
C. Item 3: Famous Dishes
IV. Category 3: Perhaps the Italian cuisine is the one responsible for the revolution of food industry around
the world
A. Item 1: Famous Italian Chefs
B. Item 2: Famous Italian Dishes
C. Item 3: Underground Hip-Hop
V. Conclusion: The three main categories of food around the world started with a sprinkle of creativity
from three countries around the world: China, Mexico, and Italia.
Note: This is only a suggestion for an outline, because every concept can be divided according to its
characteristics.
Thesis statements examples:
1. Three types of American music include blues, jazz, and hip-hop.
2. The three best global cuisines are all from Asia and include Korean, Japanese, and Thai.
3. Meals of the day can be classified into three main types: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
4. Cosmetics can be classified into three main types: eye products, foundations and concealers, and lip
products.
5. The three most common genres of popular fiction in the English language include mystery and/or crime,
romance, and science-fiction.
