Borobudur Temple

Borobudur temple is the largest Buddhist temple in the world. It has ever been included in
the 7 wonders of the world. This temple is located in Borobudur Village, Magelang, Central
Java, Indonesia. By history, it was constructed as a worship place for the Mahayana
Buddhist by the Sailendra dynasty in the 9th century. Then, it was buried under volcanic ash
for about 10 centuries. In 1814, Borobudur Temple was discovered by Sir Thomas Stamford
Raffles. When it was found, It’s wrecked and buried until a team of Dutch archaeologists
restored this site in 1907.

Borobudur Temple consists of 2.672 relief panels. The reliefs were divided into 4 main
stories, there are Karmawibhangga, Lalitavistara, Jataka/Avadana, and Gandavyuha.
Karmawibhangga which tells about human’s bad actions. The birth of Buddha and his life as
Siddhartha is figured out by Lalitavistara. Jataka/Avadana telling about Buddha’s life before
his birth as Siddhartha. Gandavyuha tells Sudhana story in search of the highest knowledge.
So, all of the reliefs are mostly telling about Buddha’s life and his teaching and recorded the
advancement found in the Javanese society at that time.

The monument is one of the most visited tourist attraction in Indonesia. In 1974, roughly
260,000 tourists, of whom 36,000 were foreigners, visited the monument. The figure
accumulates to 2.5 million visitors annually (80% were domestic tourists) in the mid-1990s,
before the country's economic crisis (1998). In 2003, residents and small businesses around
Borobudur organized several meetings and poetry protests, resisting to a provincial
government plan to build a three-story mall complex, dubbed the "Java World".

Borobudur temple is located on the island of java and is the biggest Buddhist monument in
the world, a site that is widely considered as one of the seven wonders. The temple sits on
top of a hilltop overlooking the greenfield and other hills around it. The temple was built
during the reign of the Syailendra Dynasty in the 9th century, and the style was heavily
influenced in Gupta architecture that reflects India's influence on the region, although there
is more than enough indigenous touch and elements incorporated that make Borobudur truly
an Indonesia treasure.

Measuring 123-meter x 123-meters, the monument is a sight to behold, decorated with a

total of 2,672 relief panels, and 504 buddha statue, the architectural design of this temple
have no equal. The structure is built without any cement and is built more like a lego block
structure held together without any other adhesive!

The sculpture of the statue represents the holy men of Buddha, and the mother stupa
represents the temple as a mountain. For Buddhist in Java, the mountain has a religious
meaning, like mountain Semeru which is believed to be the center of the universe, where lies
the God Thrones.
