Miscellaneous Practice 4

This document provides instructions for a 1.5 hour exam in Advanced Mechanics M1 Miscellaneous IV. It contains 7 multi-part questions worth a total of 75 marks. The document instructs students to show workings, use consistent units, and take g=9.8 m/s^2 unless otherwise specified. It also provides examiner feedback and notifies students that partial marks will be awarded.

READ BEFORE ATTEMPTING:

 Fill in your answers in the boxes provided.
 Adjust the boxes according to your space requirements. Other than this, you are
NOT PERMITTED to change any other specifications of this paper.
 Ensure that an attempt is made at every question.
 Ensure sufficient and necessary workings, values and units are presented. Absence
of any of these will lead to deduction of marks.
 Partial marks are awarded even if a certain aspect in the answer is not correct.
 When a numerical value of g is required, take g = 9.8 ms-2 and provide your
answers to two or three significant figures unless stated otherwise in the question.
 The marks for each question are shown in brackets.
 This paper is out of 75 marks.
EXAMINER’S FEEDBACK

1 A ball is projected vertically upward with speed 10 ms-1 from a point X, which is 50 m
above the ground. T seconds after the first ball is projected upward, a second ball is dropped
from X. Initially the second ball is at rest. The balls collide 25 m above the ground. Find the
value of T. [6]
2 Two ships P and Q are travelling at night with constant velocities. At midnight, P is at the
point with position vector (10i + 15j) km relative to a fixed origin O. At the same time, Q is at
the point with position vector (-16i + 26j) km. Three hours later, P is at the point with
position vector (25i + 24j) km. The ship Q travels with velocity 12i km h -1. At time t hours
after midnight, the position vectors of P and Q are p km and q km respectively. Find:
a) The velocity of P in terms of i and j. [4]
b) Expressions for p and q in terms of t, i and j. [4]
A time t hours after midnight, the distance between P and Q is d km.
c) By finding an expression for PQ, show that d2 = 58t2 – 430t + 797. [5]
Weather conditions are such that an observer on P can see the lights on Q only when the
distance between P and Q is 13 km or less.
d) Given that when t = 2 the lights on Q move into sight of the observer, find the time,
to the nearest minute, at which the lights on Q move out of sight of the observer. [7]
3 A train of mass 2500 kg pushes a carriage of mass 1100 kg along a straight horizontal
track. The engine is connected to the carriage by a shunt which is parallel to the direction of
motion of the coupling. The horizontal resistances to motion of the train and the carriage
have magnitudes R N and 500 N respectively. The engine of the train produces a constant
horizontal driving force of magnitude 8000 N that causes the train and carriage to accelerate
at 1.75 ms-2.
a) Show that the resistance to motion R acting on the train is 1200 N. [4]
b) Find the magnitude of the compression in the shunt. [3]
The train must stop at the next station, so the driver reduces the force produced by the
engine to zero and applies the brakes. The brakes produce a force on the train of magnitude
2000 N causing the engine and carriage to decelerate.
c) Given that the resistances to motion are unchanged, find the magnitude of the
thrust in the shunt. Give your answers correct to 3 s.f [8]
4 A boy sits on a box in a lift. The mass of the boy is 45 kg, the mass of the box is 20 kg and
the mass of the lift is 1050 kg. The lift is being raised vertically by a vertical cable which is
attached to the top of the lift. The lift is moving upward and has constant deceleration of 2
ms-2. By modelling the cable as being light and inextensible, find:
a) The tension in the cable. [4]
b) The magnitude of the force exerted on the box by the boy. [4]
c) The magnitude of the force exerted on the box by the lift. [4]

5 A box of mass 2 kg rests in limiting equilibrium on a rough plane angled at θ above the
3
horizontal where tan θ = . A horizontal force of magnitude P N acting into the plane is
4
applied to the box. Given that the box remains in equilibrium find the maximum possible
value of P. [8]
6 A car of mass 800 kg is towing a trailer of mass 400 kg up a straight road using a
towbar. The towbar is parallel to the road and parallel to the direction of motion of the car.
1
The road is inclined to the horizontal at an angle α, where sin α = . The engine of the car
7
produces a constant driving force of magnitude D newtons. The resistance to the motion of
the car from non-gravitational forces is modelled as a single force of magnitude 420 N. The
resistance to the motion of the trailer from non-gravitational forces is modelled as a single
force of magnitude 300 N. The car and trailer are modelled as particles and the towbar is
modelled as a light rod. Given that the tension in the towbar is 2060 N, find the value of D.
[7]
7 A small metal box of mass 6 kg is attached at B to two ropes BP and BQ. The fixed points P
and Q are on a horizontal ceiling and PQ = 3.5 m. The box hangs in equilibrium at a vertical
distance of 2 m below the line PQ, with the ropes in a vertical plane and with angle BQP =
45˚. The box is modelled as a particle and the ropes are modelled as light inextensible
strings. The diagram is given below. Find:
a) The tension in BP. [3]
b) The tension in BQ. [4]
