PEST-C ANALYSIS:

Pest-C Analysis is employed to analyze the impact of political, economic, social,

technological and competitive factors on the operations of a business. These five dimensions
play a significant role in mapping out the opportunities and threats exposed to a business in
the external environment. The analysis of the Robin Hood reveals the following opportunities
and threats across the five above-stated dimensions:

POLITICAL FACTORS:

Political factors around Sherwood Forest carried the following opportunities and threats for
Robin Hood and his Merrymen:

Opportunities:

 The proposition to freed King Richard means that Robin Hood and his Merrymen could
have additional benefits in terms of political security and administrative justice for the
people of Sherwood Forest.
 Restoring the power of King Richard would also lead Merrymen to be in the good books
of local people in their fight against the conniving Sheriff.

Threats:

 Change in the taxation policy of Merrymen, as discussed in the case study, would likely
lead to disrupting the alliance between Merrymen and the farmers and townspeople
because it does not align with the band’s motto i.e. ‘Rob from the rich and give to the
ASSIGNMENT
poor’. # 03

 Robin Hood has the opportunity to work for building a sustainable workforce with its
loyal band members in order to reduce unemployment in Sherwood Forest and
surrounding areas.
 As the growing band had started to exceed the food capacity of the forest, the band
members had the perfect opportunity to involve their alliance in cultivating food crops.
This would open doors for Merrymen to sell off the surplus crops and generate profits for
the organization and its allies.

Threats:

 Increasing number of band members would lead to a lack of discipline and cooperation
among Merrymen members. Moreover, employing more members would also mean a
decline in the vigilant aura that Merrymen strives to champion upon.

SOCIAL FACTORS:

The social factors will affect Robin Hood in the following ways:
Opportunities:

 Due to the prevailing circumstance of inequality and injustice across Sherwood Forest,
Merrymen has the opportunity to transform the society by eradicating social evils such as
undue political influence, inequality, injustice, etc.
 Merrymen also has the opportunity to unite the local population under one mission and
fight to dethrone the Sheriff.

Threats:

 Due to the excessive political connections of Sheriff, there is a constant threat of an attack
on the group and its allies to shun their demands for justice and equality.
 With Merrymen having to obtain supplies and food from outlying villages due to the
growth of the band, there is a threat that the band along with its allies in Sherwood Forest
might suffer from financial constraints if it fails to avail the opportunity as discussed in
second point of economic opportunities.

TECHNOLOGICAL FACTORS:

Analysis of the case study reveals the following opportunities and threats for Merrymen from
technological point of view:

Opportunities:

 Though the operational environment for Merrymen was not much advanced from
technological aspect as revealed by the analysis; however, if Merrymen were to pursue its
campaign in the present era then it would have had the opportunity to advance and be
compatible with innovative technologies.

Threats:

 The environment in which Merrymen existed had a threat from technological

advancement because the practices of Robin Hood and his band members were not
anywhere close to be compatible with technological advancement. This would have
definitely hindered the productivity of the band.

COMPETITIVE FACTORS:

The competitive forces around Sherwood Forest carried the following opportunities and
threats for Robin Hood and his Merrymen:

Opportunities:

 The biggest rival of Merrymen is indeed the evil Sheriff. If Merrymen succeeds in
countering this competitive force i.e. in dethroning the Sheriff, it would bring Merrymen
under a positive political light.
 By helping the Barons in restoring the power of King Richard, Merrymen can get the
political support and security from the King to dismiss the Sheriff of Nottingham.
 Moreover, Robin Hood and his band members could be the next ruling power in
Sherwood Forest if they are able to overcome the challenges thrown by competitors and
succeed in eliminating all social evils.

Threats:

 The Sheriff’s forces are becoming more powerful with each passing day due to increasing
political connections. Therefore, a threat of an attack and imprisonment is always there
for the members of Merrymen.
 With Robin Hood’s plan to impose a Fixed Transit Tax, there is a chance that the Sheriff
can lure the alliances of Merrymen particularly the farmers and townspeople by bribing
them. Sheriff may also use his political affiliations to threaten the poor farmers and
townspeople to cease their alliance with Merrymen.
