Mark Berry, Sandra Griffith, and Juan Carlos are seniors at Florida Tech University, majoring in Industrial
Technology with a quality emphasis. The three (3) hope to be quality directors after graduation. Mark said
that he will use the DMAIC Approach when he graduated and land his first job since it is simple, easy to
use, and effective. Sandra argued because she thinks Six Sigma Approach is better and much reliable.
Juan Carlos joined in their debate and said that he is going to make a master list of improvement
strategies including Kaizen Approach and he will use whatever is best for a specific situation.
1. What approach do you think is best for promoting continual improvement? Explain your answer.
The best approach that can be applied for promoting continual improvement is the DMAIC
Approach because it is refers to collecting data quality strategy for the improvement of the
process for the company. DMAIC stands for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control in
which every acronym has its meaning and for the first acronym is Define it determines the
problem of how to resolve it and Improve their activities, having opportunities and their goals how
to attain them, also to define the customers’ requirements and which to understand their feedback
about the product or service that offers if they are satisfied or not. To provide an overview about
the entire process and analyzing the requirements that meets the customer’s needs. Next is to
Measure the performance of the process which it records the activities during the process and the
capability to assess the ability of the process that meets the specification, also to analyze the
problems or causes that will be take charge to resolve it. Another acronym is Analyze this is the
process which it determines the root cause of having a poor performance in the process, this will
be a help to identify the possible improvement of the product, services, and resolving the process
failure. Improve is the another process which it address and eliminate the root cause and to solve
the problems and focusing on the project goals and using the plans/ideas and also to motivate
the workers to do their work and to be efficient. Last is the Control which it improves the current
and future process base on its performance, also to avoid making errors which it is detectable
and need to keep an improved process at the proper level. This approach would be suited for
every company to improve their process performance.
2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the different approaches mentioned in the case
study?
The advantages and disadvantages of the different approaches is, first the advantages of Six
Sigma Approach a proven track record of adding value and ensuring quality to the output of a
business in the form of incremental improvements to a product or a service. It may also be
used to optimize supply chain processes and increase customer satisfaction. The benefits of
Six Sigma go beyond simple problem-solving and consider the entire production process from
the raw materials to the finish product, as opposed to only the product. It identifies and provides
recommendations for potential problems before the company incurs any form of loss. Six Sigma
may be implemented in several categories within a business, directly impacting profitability and
reducing costs. It is significant to note that for B2B customers, the Six Sigma standard for
manufacturing products is a credible endorsement. For the Disadvantages Six Sigma inspects
the business processes minute-by-minute and generates large amounts of empirical data,
leading to time-consuming and complicated procedures. Also, because it is a quality
improvement process at its root, adoption of its protocols often leads to an increase in the
overall costs. Sometimes when a company implements Six Sigma, problems arise as the
company focuses on Six Sigma endorsed policies only and forgets about its specific mission
statement or policies. For small businesses, it may constrain new ideas favoring creativity and
innovation, which require some risk-taking to implement. Companies must find certified Six
Sigma institutes to train their employees or conduct in-house training without formal
certification. In either case, the cost of Six Sigma adoption by small businesses is too high to
be feasible. Even large companies must provide a lot of training for employees to grasp the
system.
