The Figure Of An Artist Doesn´t Really Matter At The End

In 1865, was the premiere of the Opera that would change the music world forever. I´m not

joking if I tell you that from this masterpiece is born all the music that will be composed in the

20th century, including music for films. We are talking about the famous “Tristan und Isolde”

composed by Richard Wagner (1813-1883), one of the greatest composers in the musical history.

If he hadn´t written this Opera, all of us would probably be at least fifty years behind when it

comes to music. But why?

This piece tells us the story of an impossible love between Tristan and Isolda, so How the

composer expressed this feeling in music? Well, by putting a “weird chord” throughout the entire

Opera, a few musical notes that were common in that century, but no one else has used it in the

same way that Wagner did. This harmonic event is known as the “Tristan Chord” and it breaks

all the rules in musical theory, making way for a new way to compose music…the atonalism1,

the music of the future.

He was definitely a genius. It´s a shame that he once said that Jews will never write great

music. Yes! he spent all his money on gambling, he had sex with his best friend’s wife, he left

many cities just because he didn´t want to pay his taxes, even Nietzsche wrote an entire book2

accusing him for dishonesty, and also his music was playing on the speakers of Auschwitz. It´s a

pity, isn´t it?... or not? Does Wagner´s work deserve to be studied and listened to, knowing that

he was a terrible person?

Many people will answer with a big NO. They will say that each work of art is the reflection

of the artist, and for that reason is invalid to promote the work of a person like that. Well, let me

tell something paradoxical…

… An artist is not his work

“As the product of the separation, it is a source of inspiration for the artist. The romantic artist is the

Domine3 of nostalgia” (Gómez, 2002).

In the book Nostalgia y Modernidad, Gómez philosophizes about nostalgia, and how this

concept represents the greatest impossibility in human nature. For him, only one type of person

is able to consummate the desire of “the great return” … the artist with his imagination and

genius.

He is a teacher at USFQ, and I had the chance to talk about this topic with him. I asked him if

the artist really was his work. He answered that probably not, indeed, he said that almost all the

artists in human history have written about something impossible for them, something that is

totally contrary to their personalities and values. And he is apparently right.

An artist is a potter of his own impossibility.

That´s the main reason why Wagner, who got married only for convenience, wrote the most

epic love scene in all Opera tradition with his “Tristan and Isolda”. That´s the reason why

A Master.
Mozart refined the art of writing music in classicism, whereas he was a totally “nasty boy” in the

real life. Or if we talk about this time, that´s the reason why Chris Brown was releasing songs

like “With You”, “Young Love”, “Is This Love”, while he was accused of domestic violence

against Rihanna. How ironic!

(At this point, it is worth to say that I´m not defending the artist and his obviously terrible

actions, I´m defending the music, which is an antithesis of the artist mind.)

As a singer-songwriter, I could say that is definitely more satisfactory to talk about stories

that could never happen because it helps us to escape to another world where we could be

somebody else; the reality might not be enough. “A man writes because he is tormented and

unsure of himself” is the phrase that appears in the movie “Stalker” by Andrei Tarkovsky when

the character called “The Writer” philosophizes about his profession; in my opinion, that simple

statement has been the conductor thread of the paradoxical inspiration in artists along the ages.

So, if the work of art is everything but the artist himself, who is the owner of the art?

The Owners

Imagine that you are a person who thinks that we shouldn´t separate the art from the artist.

So, you would probably say things like this if we were talking about an evil- genius musician,

painter, or whatever: “All

Ideas...
el papel del publico(es el que es dueño de la interpretación)

lo que importa es el conocimiento que se aporta a cada estrato de conocimiento
