July’s People Context

“She washed the children, then herself in the dirty water; for the first time in her life she found
that she smelled bad between her legs, and – sending the children and dropping the sack over
the doorway – disgustedly scrubbed at the smooth lining of her vagina and the unseen knot of
her anus in the scum and suds. He husband took a chance and washed in the river- all these
east-flowing rivers carried the risk of Bilharzia infection.”

ANSWER:
This excerpt is taken from the novel “July’s People” Nadine Gordimer. ‘She’ in the passage is
Maureen Smales, protagonist of the novel while ‘he’ refers to Bam, her husband. After a
tiresome journey and a sleep in a shabby hut the Smales got a chance to wash themselves.

[Identification of the context. Text- By whom- (who – to whom)- explanation of who she or
he refers to – when]

This situation takes place in the beginning of the plot. They are now in July’s village having fled
the burning city. However, given the significance placed on hygiene, it is evident that it will be
as crucial as being able o be safe from the horror that waits the Whites and will shape not only
the plot but also the character of Maureen.

[Explanation about the relevance of the extract on the overall plot]

As a person highly concerned about hygiene and cleanliness Maureen faced the hardships for the
first time in her life. This shows how she has always felt privileged enough to never have to even
dream of undergoing even the slightest inconveniences. She experienced the foul smell oozing
from her private parts and was forced to wash herself from the dirty water that she once used to
give a bath to the children. She rubbed vigorously to get rid of the smell. That act of rubbing
suggests how the Whites try to rub off the identity of Blacks. Maureen was dragged into a
desperate position without the modern sanitary facilities she used to enjoy throughout her life.
While she was struggling hard Bam showed signs of adapting to the current situation.

[Character]
This part is important because it brings out the theme of transformation and serves as a kind of
admonishment to the rest of the Smales’s days in July’s village. It is with distaste, disgust and
surprise that she explains how this was a first-time experience unexpected and most unwelcome.
The transformation is not viewed in a positive light. Furthermore, the usage of third person
narration gives a well-rounded perspective towards the situation and is not limited to one
character’s perception, heightening the authenticity of the text.
