Reading Response #3

Threshold Concepts are very important to understand when learning in a particular

community. The book “Naming What We Know” gives so much important information to know

about the overall idea of threshold concepts. There are quite a few threshold concepts spoken

about throughout the book with claims that are so important. Sections 3.1-3.3 are where I found

three important points made by these authors. Writing can be done so much easier once you can

clearly understand the threshold concepts and what they mean.

Naming What We Know does a great job at explaining all threshold concerpts. The third

concept of threshold concepts is “Writing Enacts and Creates Identities and Ideologies” makes

some really good points to understand. Section 3.1 talks about how writing is linked to identity.

An important point made there explained how writers develop and perform identities that are

related to their interests, beliefs, and values in the communities they are a part of. This was a

significant claim due to the fact that it is so valid. Being in a community means that everyone

belonging is going to share interests and beliefs because they are all similar. It would not make

sense if they did not share these ideas as writing will make you a particular person that fits into

that community. I feel it was an important point to make as each community has the same values

that are different from one another. The next section that made a great point was Section 3.2 -

“Writers’ Histories, Processes, and Identities Vary.” The author explained how writers’ identities

are a function of the time in which they live. This means that their “histories, identities, and

processes are situated in a given historical context.” Writers need their background and past to

shape who they are and what they are doing as a writer. Your identity is made up with such a

large part of your history in writing. It was a significant point made as it shows how writers are

represented by the time they are living in. Lastly, Section 3.3 (Writing is Informed By Prior

Experience) made a great point that writing always has been part of a larger conversation or

network. I found this interesting as it relates to intertextuality. Writing always contains other

writings in it that are in relation to each other and are involved in a web of meaning together. It is

unusual that writing will be a totally original work, which is explained by this concept. The

authors of these concepts provide great descriptions that stood out tremendously when reading.

Writing has impacted me many different times throughout the many writings I have ever

wrote\. When thinking of the piece of work that has shaped my relationship with writing the

most, the memoir I wrote in 10th grade would definitely be what comes to mind. My teacher told

us to pick any topic for this memoir, just something that has lots of information and details to be

able to write the amount that was needed. I wrote my memoir about my parents divorce. It

included so many parts including their divorce, our lives after, my dads second marriage, another

divorce and everything in between. There were a lot of negative things involved with this

experience, but many positive things have also come out of it. I thoroughly explained each event

that occurred in chronological order and included smaller details that were important in between.

I found that writing this was able to help me with some of the issues I wrote about that I dealt

with.

Identity is important to have as any writer in order to really be able to relate to what you

are writing. One of the identities that I have when writing is as a social media personality. I think

this personality is much more different than my identity as a college student in an English class.

My identity is writing of a much more informal sense that does not follow many guidelines.

When posting any type of picture or writing on social media such as Facebook or Instagram, my

identity is the same as the community of my friends or followers. As said before, communities

share similar beliefs, interests, values, etc., so that also goes for writing on social media

platforms. We are much more likely to have different personalities on social media posts than

many other writings because it is all based upon the context and history of what is happening. I

like the identity I have grown to be for a social media personality and hope to grow even more

on it in the future.

Regarding to my future, writing will be one of the aspects that I will always keep with me

if/when needed. Right now, my major is Health Services Administration. I am very excited to be

starting my major classes this semester. There are many job opportunities for me with this major

like an administrator or a hospital, clinic, doctor’s office, etc. I think that my writing identity will

be much more different in the future for my career than what it is now. I believe that my identity

will be a part of the community in my career, which is an administrator of a health care facility,

and it will be based off of the knowledge I have gained throughout my years of college at UCF.

In the future, I will take many values of discourse communities and incorporate it into my work.

Making sure to find the genre and understand that intertextuality is a large part of writing will be

one of the most important things I will keep with me as I proceed into my career as well as

threshold concepts. Threshold concepts are another thing I will keep with me as they are a big

part of writing that help readers understand what is happening so much better.
