Spiny Forest Ecoregion: Biodiversity and Population Profile
♣ Covers more than 65,000 km2 in Southern
and Southwestern Madagascar
♣ 95% of plants are endemic
♣ Highest concentration of baobab species in
the world
♣ Fauna include Radiated tortoise, Grandidier’s
mongoose, and lemur species and
subspecies, including some found only in the
ecoregion (e.g. gray-brown mouse lemur)
♣ 75% of all medicinal plants used by
communities in Madagascar come from this
ecoregion
♣ Priority areas for bird conservation
♣ Three protected areas
