Blended Learning Lesson Plan

The lesson introduces students to the five components of health-related physical fitness and the FITT training principles. Students work in groups to identify example exercises for each component and discuss how to apply FITT principles. They then independently create a personalized fitness plan and record themselves doing it over a week to demonstrate consistency. Videos and infographics are used to engage students and provide models for the assignments. The goal is for students to gain knowledge on developing effective fitness plans based on their individual needs and abilities.

Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:
Personalizing Physical Fitness
Objectives:
Students will be able to identify the five components of health-related physical fitness.
Students will be able to design a personal health-related physical fitness plan based on FITT
training principles.
Students will demonstrate consistency in following their workout plan.
State Standards:
8-2.3 Identify the five components of health-related physical fitness (muscle strength, muscle endurance,
aerobic capacity, flexibility, and body composition) and, with limited teacher assistance, use them to
design a personal health-related physical fitness plan based on FITT (frequency, intensity, type, and time)
training principles.
8-3.1 Monitor his or her own participation in physical activity (for example, maintain an activity log for a
seven-day period, documenting progress toward achievement of personal goals).

Context:
This lesson is designed for middle level physical education students. Prior to this lesson, students were
educated on using equipment appropriately in physical activity setting and identifying safety concerns
with specific activities. This lesson is designed for students to demonstrate knowledge of concepts,
principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance. Students will use knowledge
from the prior lesson help develop their personalized fitness plan while displaying safe practices.
Students will gain knowledge on the five components of health-related physical fitness. Students will
learn what types of exercises fit into each component and what is required for the workout to be
effective. Students will perform self-assessments with their peers in order to discover what components
of physical fitness they need the most improvement on. Students will compose their own personal
physical fitness plan based on what they learn. Students will compose a video documenting their
participation in their own fitness plan for a week. After this lesson, students will go directly into a
detailed lesson on the health benefits of a physically active lifestyle.

Data:
Students will be grouped in 3’s or 4’s depending on class size. Students will be grouped at random for
this assignment. I would like to try to allow students to connect with others they may not normally work
with. Random grouping allows for an added development of social skills that I feel is necessary. I intend
for many lessons to be random grouping except for when students are participating in team games.
Those classes will either be grouped based on ability or student chosen by electing team captains.

Procedures:
Introduction (10 minutes):
I will allow students to first get changed for class. Students will then sit in their
designated seat/area for attendance. I will begin by giving the students a brief overview
of what we will be covering in class today. I will tell them we are going to learn about the
five components of health-related physical fitness and what the FITT principle is. I will
inform them that we will be collaborating with their classmates to create their programs
in order to assist each other. I will briefly explain to them that they will be creating their
own personalized fitness plan and creating a video of their participation over a week’s
time.
Teacher Directed (15 minutes):
I will begin the lesson by asking students if anyone can identify the five components of
health-related physical fitness. I will allow time for answers and discussion, then I will
list the five components. I will then show a video from YouTube that defines the five
components and gives examples of each. Next, I will ask students to list some examples
of exercises of each component. After some discussion on each component, I will ask
students if anyone knows what the FITT principle is and how it applies to fitness. I will
then project an infographic on the smartboard that describes the FITT principle. Next, I
will ask students how do we incorporate FITT principle and the 5 health related
components in order to create a fitness program that best fits you? Wait for answers.
Explain how based on our own specific needs we use FITT principle to determine what
exercises will work best for our fitness plan. Next, I will assign the students groups for
their group collaboration.

Collaborative (15 minutes):

For this section students will separate throughout the class with their groups. Students
will work with their group members to create a list of exercises for each component.
Students should get creative and help each other to think outside of the box. Each student
should create a chart on their IPad using the notes section that includes the component
and then 5 examples of exercises for each. Once students establish 5 exercises for each
component, they should begin discussing the FITT principle and how they will apply it to
each exercise.
Independent Digital (30 minutes):
During this portion students will use the charts they created in their groups. Students will
choose at least 2 exercises from each of the components to create their preferred workout
plan. Students will then find a spot in the gym to perform their workout plan. Students
will use their Ipads to record themselves performing their workout routine. This will
serve as their day one for their week activity log. Students will create an adobe spark
video documenting each day of their workout. Students should keep track of their
progress including how they felt, how tired they were, how easy/hard the workout was in
the beginning compared to the end of the week.
Closure (15 minutes):
At the end of the lesson, I will show students a sample video of what their assignment
should look like. Then, students will have time to ask any remaining questions. We will
do a group cool down/stretch together. Students will be allowed to go change back into
their uniforms and hydrate themselves before leaving the gym.

Rationale:

Five Components of Physical Fitness Video:

I chose this video because it was very direct and to the point. It was not too busy or
distracting. I liked the way he spoke clearly, performed movements with his words and
had it written on the video as well. It provided for multiple forms of learning in relation
to visual and auditory learning. The information was accurate, and the quality of the
picture was great.
FITT Principal Infographic:
I choose this infographic because it was very appealing to the eye and it was overall very
neat or organized. It maps out exactly what the FITT principle is and breaks it up into
parts that are easy for readers to interpret.
Adobe Spark Video:
I choose this app for student assignments because it provides students with a creative way
to track progress and hold them accountable. I feel like it allows them to engage in this
lesson a little more because they are working toward an overall project that I hope will
develop their love for physical fitness. The app is very user friendly and allows students
to use clips of each day’s exercises and add sound as they please.
Sample Video:
I felt this was a great example to show students for their assignment. It gives them a
reference to go off of. Sometimes students can feel lost in assignments especially if they
are not familiar with the content and apps they are using. The girl in the video did a good
job of documenting her exercises and adding effects to make it a little more creative.
