Definition of Split Air Conditioning

A split system air conditioner consists of an indoor and outdoor unit connected by pipes. It works by pumping refrigerant through a cooling circuit, where it cools and vaporizes in the condenser before expanding and dropping in temperature in the evaporator, absorbing heat from the home. Over time, technology like inverters has been added to split systems to provide more precise temperature control and reduce energy consumption by varying compressor speed according to load. Split systems are an efficient and cost effective option for air conditioning that can be powered by solar panels.

Definition of Split Air Conditioning

A split system air conditioner is comprised of two components. An indoor unit and an
outdoor unit.A split system air conditioner is perfect for homes or rooms that can’t easily
accommodate window units. And because they don’t require bulky ductwork, they’re a
convenient choice. Because no ductwork means no major installation projects.
They’re also much quieter than window units. And keep a lower profile.

A split system replacement refers to a special type of air conditioner, which has a
condensing unit that sits separately from an evaporative coil unit. The two parts are
connected by a copper tube that carries the refrigerant between the units. Our AiRCO
Heating & Cooling professionals would be happy to share the different types of split system
replacements available on the market today.

The condenser unit, which contains the compressor, operates outside your Austin home.
The compressor does not actually make cool air, it instead pulls the heat from your home
using refrigerant, through the condenser unit, and blows it outside.

The coil portion of your air conditioner resides inside your home, usually inside a metal
cabinet that may also contain the inside component of your heat pump or furnace. This
component of your air conditioner takes the refrigerant and expands it in order for it to cool
down to just above freezing. When air is blown over the coil, the refrigerant absorbs the
heat, which then makes your home feel cooler.
2. How Split air conitioning work

The indoor and outdoor components of a split system air conditioner are connected via
series of high pressure gas pipes and electrical wires. Not an ducted system, like a
centralised air conditioning setup uses. That’s another benefit of the split system. Extensive
ducting can result in small losses due to heat exchange within the system, particularly if the
roof cavity isn’t insulated..

This means a split system air conditioner is not only efficient with its performance. But it also
keeps your energy costs down because there’s less waste. Which is better for the
environment, too.A split system air conditioner works by first pumping a gas refrigerant
through the unit’s cooling circuit.

The compressor pumps this refrigerant into the condenser unit. And as the gas moves
through condenser, it cools down and vaporizes into a liquid. The liquid refrigerant is then
pushed at high pressure through one side of the evaporator; expanding and changing back
from a liquid into a gas. As this gas rapidly expands, its temperature drops dramatically. This
creates a significant temperature differential within the evaporator.

As this cooled gas refrigerant moves through the evaporator, it absorbs the heat inside your
home and carries it outside and into the inlet port of your split system air conditioner’s
compressor. And the cycle begins again. This enables a split system air conditioner to
distribute cooled air with precision. Another way they help to keep energy costs down.
3. History of Air conditioning

The commercially available of air conditioning applications started based on the need to cool
air for industrial processes than for personal comfort. The first electrical air conditioning was
invented by Willis Haviland Carrier in the year 1902. He was also known as the Father of
Modern Air Conditioning.

His invention was designed to improve the manufacturing process of a printing plant. By
controlling the temperature and humidity of the plant, the processes were made more
efficient as the paper size and the ink alignment were consistently maintained.

The Carrier Air Conditioning Company of America was established by him to meet the
demand of better productivity in the workplace. Today, Carrier Corporation is the biggest air
conditioner manufacturer and marketing corporation in the world in central air conditioning.

The discovery of Freon in 1928 by Thomas Midgley, Jr., a safer refrigerant to humans
compared to the toxic and flammable gases such as ammonia, propane and methyl chloride
sparks the invention of air conditioning systems for residential, industrial and commercial
applications.

Unfortunately, the use of CFC and HCFC refrigerants are causing the depletion of ozone layer
in our atmosphere that is causing harmful rays to penetrate our earth. Newer ozone friendly
refrigerants have been developed to replace refrigerants such as R-11, R-12 and R-22 to
name a few. Non-ozone depletion refrigerant such as R-410a has been used in newer air
conditioning systems.
4. Technology In Split air conditioning

Inverter Technology
Air conditioner compressors are driven by motor, and motor rotation speed depends on
power supply frequency. An inverter modulates power supply frequency to control motor
rotation speed. Inverters stabilize temperature by adjusting compressor operation according
to load to eliminate waste and save energy.

a. Even adopting an inverter to the fan motors of the indoor and outdoor units provides more
precise control and contributes to energy savings.
b. Temperature Control by Inverter/Non-Inverter Compressors (Cooling)
c. When temperature is higher than set temperature, the motor rotates faster to lower room
temperature.
d. Motor rotation speed is adjusted to maintain a constant temperature.
e. Motor rotates when temperature is higher than set temperature.
f. When temperature approaches set temperature, the motor rotation speed is reduced.
g. Motor stops when temperature is lower than set temperature.
h. Variation width for temperature becomes large when temperature is adjusted by repeatedly
starting and stopping the motor. Furthermore, the motor always rotates at constant speed,
and energy consumption increases from the energy loss of starting and stopping.
i. Lowering motor rotation speed according to load reduces both variation width for
temperature and energy consumption.
5. Conclusion

There are a number of other advantages in choosing to install a split system air conditioning
system in your home.Because split systems are powered by electricity, they can be
subsidised by solar power. With the help of solar panels, you can save even more money on
the operation of your system.

Some split system air conditioner models can also purify the air. These units that feature air
purification help prevent dust and allergens from circulating throughout your home. When it
comes to the installation of an air conditioning system in your home, you have several
options. But few are as efficient, cost effective, quiet and reliable as a split system air
conditioner.

Easy to install, affordable to operate and rarely requiring maintenance, a quality split system
air conditioner can provide you and your family with comfortable living conditions, year
round, for years to come.
