Gas supplier system contains of filter unit (R1), a heater (R2), 3 compressors (R3/R4/R5), & 5 gas
turbines (R6/R7/R8/R9/R10/R11).
The 3 compressor work in parallel, meaning that the compressors sub-system operates if at least
one of the compressor operates. The 5 turbines work in parallel, meaning that the turbines sub-
system operates if at least two of the compressors operate.
Each component may fail independently of the others, with the following failure probability (λ):

Solution:
The reliability of the system defined as the probability that system dosn’t fail during maintenance
intervals.Therefor, to calculate the reliability of the whole system, we should calculate reliability
of each sub-system separately.
Same reliability result we will get from the table below by sum the reliability for all 7
probability cases, as the sub-system can be operated by one compressor only. (yellow cell

The reliability of turbines system reduced as there is more chance for system to fail comparing
with previous case.
Example 2:
Diesel engines contains of 4 cambers, chambers is connected in parallel system, at least one
chamber operates to resume the system. Assume that each chamber fail to ignite once in 10
attempts. After engine ignited, chamber has 40% chance to completely collapse.
Solution:
- Failure ratio for each chamber (FR) = number of failures/ number of attempts (λ) = 1/10= 0.1
failures/hours
- Failure ratio each chamber after ignition = 1- R = 1-0.9x.4 = 0.64 failures/hours

Question3: A system is composed of 7 components connected in a specific network as
shown below. Each component reliability is indicated in the diagram. This system is
considered as a combination of in-series and in-parallel units; and it's overall reliability Rsy
can be evaluated by the above-mentioned procedure, including the network reduction
technique.
(a) consider all components in the network arranged in-series and obtain the lower bound
for Rsy
(b) consider all components in the network arranged in-parallel and obtain the upper
bound or Rsy
(c) consider the exact network configuration and obtain the exact Rsy
Solution
(a) The lower bound of the system reliability (Rsy)lb (assume that component failures are
independent events) = (0.9)3 (0.8)2 (0.75)2 = 0.26244
(b) The upper bound (Rsy)ub (It occurs in practice that in many an in-parallel system failure of
one component does not depend on that of others; and the system can function successfully
when at least one component remains functional) = 1 - [(1-0.9)3 (1-0.8)2 (1-0.75)2] = 0.9999975
* the in-parallel unit from B to D is replaced by a single equivalent component with RBD = 1 - [(1-
0.75)2] = 0.9375
* the in-series unit from A to B to D is replaced by a single equivalent component with RABD =
(0.9) (0.8) (0.9375) = 0.675
* the in-series unit from A to C is replaced by a single equivalent component with RAC = (0.9)
(0.8) = 0.72
* The in-parallel unit from A to O is replaced by a single equivalent component with RAO = 1 - [(1-
0.675) (1-0.72)] = 0.909
* The overall system reliability is then determined by the in-series unit from I to O: Rsy = (0.9)
(0.909) = 0.8181.
