1 INTRODUCTION
NOTE:
The present manual contains updated information reflecting the current
status of the product at the moment of sale. This is intended to provide
the user with an adequate guide for the use of the equipment and for
every aspect related to the safety of use.
The manual might not reflect product variations that have no impact on
the operating mode and the safe use of the equipment.
The present manual provides the user with instructions for a safe and
efficient use of the equipment.

2.1 Warnings
Apollo is suited for use in hospital, therefore the line connection may not
be carried out in buildings with domestic-type power supply lines.

USER'S MANUAL
Safety aspects
Electromagnetic
Conformity EMC usage environment
emissions
Irradiated and A class Apollo can be connected to a power
conducted emissions supply line different from the domestic
line.
CISPR 11 Group I Apollo generates Radio Frequency
energy only for internal functioning. The
generated R.F. level does not cause
interference with the electrical devices
used nearby.
Emitted harmonic Complying Apollo can be connected to a power
EN 61000-3-2 supply line different from the domestic
line.
Flicker EN 61000-3-3 Complying Apollo can be connected to a power
tension/emission supply line different from the domestic
fluctuations line.
EN 60601-1-2 immunity Complying Apollo can be connected to a power
(EN 61000-4-2 /3 /4 /5 supply line different from the domestic
/6 /8 /11) line.
In case of line voltage dips that last longer than what can be sustained by
the table electronic control system, the examination in progress may be
cancelled. As a consequence, the tabletop and scan movements, as well
as the angulation, that may cause damage to the patient become
inhibited. The spot film device will be initialised and, in case the cassette
is loaded, on the display a warning will ask the operator to remove it
before proceeding.
Apollo cannot be installed in operating theatres.
Apollo must be powered off when using the electric electrosurgery cutter
or similar devices.
Clean and, when necessary, disinfect the parts that may come into
contact with the patient by following the procedures in Chapter 8.

NOTE:
The front view shows a 600x600x2000 mm (23.6"x23.6"x78.7")
occupation area as specified by the applied regulations. In reality,
because the I.I., spot film device, tube group, has an excursion of
1600 mm (62.9"), the total occupation zone is the one showed in Figure
2. Such area takes into account the above-mentioned excursion.

Safety aspects
Some of Apollo components contain material and liquid that, at the end
of the equipment life-cycle, must be disposed of at the recycling centres
appointed by the Local Health Units.
In particular, the equipment contains the following materials and/or
components:
• Motors and gear box: lubricating oil, steel, aluminum.
• Motors: iron, copper, hard plastic material casings.
• Spot film device: hard plastic material casings, X-ray primary
protections lead.
• Electric cabinet: iron, aluminum, copper, hard plastic material,
printed circuits supports.
The crossed out wheeled bin symbol placed on the equipment or its
package means that the equipment must be collected separately from the
other waste.
The separate collection of this equipment at the end of its life cycle is
managed by the manufacturer/distributor. The user that want to discard
this equipment should contact the local distributor and follow the system
he adopted for the separate collection.
The correct separate collection for the subsequent recycling, treatment
and environmentally compatible disposal contributes to avoid negative
effects on the environment and on the health and promotes the reuse
and/or recycling of the materials that the equipment is made of.
The illegal disposal of the equipment made by the user will cause the
application of sanctions according to the local regulations.

OPERATIONS
When the table is powered on, the display shows the release version of
the software installed on the machine for 3 seconds.
WARNING:
Power supply connections and Apollo powering on and off operations
different from those indicated above, do not comply with the directives
approved by Villa Sistemi Medicali and which are clearly stated in the
Apollo table Service Manual.
In case of emergency, the system can be shut down and all Apollo table
movements can be immediately stopped as well as all the X-ray system
functions by pressing the emergency switch located on the side of the
spot film device and on the control console.
NOTE:
When powering on Apollo table, if the cassette is in the spot film device,
the following message is displayed
The movements controlled by the joysticks will not be activated until the
cassette is completely removed.
In this case, the removal button "45" on the console is not available. To
remove the cassette press the removal button "18" on the side of the
table. To eject automatically the cassette, only a button pressure is
sufficient.

NOTE:
The Digital modality is available depending on the system configuration.
The Stepping angio modality is available depending on the system
configuration and on whether this option has been activated or not.
The Spot film modality is not available on the Apollo table Digital and
DR-DRF versions.
5.2.1 Spot
Spot film device modality
(N.A. for All Digital and DR-
DR-DRF versions)
The selection of the Spot film device modality involves the use of the spot
film device to carry out standard X-rays that use as image receptor an
X-ray film or a direct sensor, in case of CR systems. In both cases, a
cassette needs to be positioned inside the spot film device.
To access such operating mode, set "Spot film device" as working place
on the generator console and select the dedicated function button "13"
on the Apollo console.
The tube-collimator group must be centered on the spot film device, thus,
no tube rotation angle needs to be set.
The Spot film modality is not available on the Apollo Digital and
Apollo DR-DRF table versions.
(Rev. 7) 29 APOLLO
USER'S MANUAL
Preliminary operations
Examinations carried out in Digital modality involve the use of the image
intensifier rather than the X-ray film as image receptor.
This modality is available only in case the system is fitted with a digital
image acquisition device.
NOTE:
This modality can be used also in the standard version with Spot Film
Device.
To access the digital modality, select the relative working place by using
the control on the generator console.
If a cassette is present inside the Spot Film Device, the Digital modality is
inhibited.
The choice of Digital modality, with cassette in the Spot Film Device, will
generate the message on the display:
<< Remove cassette >>
To access Digital modality, remove the cassette.
5.2.3 DR-
DR-DRF modality
Examinations carried out with Apollo DR-DRF involve the use of the flat
panel imager rather than the X-ray film (or the II+camera) as image
receptor.
To access the Direct modality, select the relative working place by using
the control on the generator console.
In this modality the fluoro control is not available, while the preparation
and X-ray controls are active both on the Apollo table and on the
generator.

6.1 Collimator
The Apollo table was designed to accept square field or square field with
iris collimators, both pre-set to function in Manual, Automatic and Hold
modality.
The two types of collimators are fitted with a halogen lamp that projects a
luminous field of the same size of the X-ray field.
The table is fitted with shutters inside the serial changer that, by
reducing the effects of the stray radiation, allow for a defined separation
between images of the same film.

Description
The collimator is always fitted with a halogen lamp that, by projecting
a luminous field of the same size of the X-ray field, enables the
centering of the patient without fluoro exposures.
Ease of operation
The collimator light can be switched on by using button "22" on
Apollo console or button "1" on the panel on the side of the table.
WARNING:
The switching on and off cycle of the collimator lamp should not exceed 2
consecutive duty cycles followed by 180 secs. of switching off.
This duty cycle prevents the excessive overheating, caused by the
halogen lamp, of the parts that can come into contact with the operator
or, accidentally, with the patient.

Description
The manual adjustment function of the collimator permits to freely
move the collimator's shutters from the minimum to the maximum
position without SID or other restrictions. Its main application is in
examinations with cassettes not positioned in the spot film device
(Direct modality).
WARNING:
In the manual modality, in order to reduce the amount of radiation, the
collimator's opening must be reduced and the maximum source-to-film
distance must be used depending on the type of examination in progress.
Ease of operation
Press button "20" on the Apollo console to activate the collimation
manual function. The corresponding LED will light up.
The opening and closing movements of the collimator shutters are
activated by means of joystick "48" on the console or by means of the

the limitation base and height directions.
• Direct modality:
When the direct modality is activated, the manual collimation
function is automatically set and the manual function LED near
button "20" on the console lights up.
Thanks to the collimator's manual function, it is possible to carry
out projections on chest stands or on cassettes in direct contact
with the patient by freely moving the collimator shutters from the
minimum to the maximum position by means of joystick "48" or
by means of the controls on the collimator panel.
For C-CSA-US versions the collimated size, in this modality, is
displayed thanks of index present on frontal collimator panel.
For each axis a graduated scale is present with inch film
dimensions referred to four inch SID. The SID allowed are 40", 45",
60", 72" and film range between 5" and 17".
WARNING:
To allow the correct collimation, put always the receptor in

NOTE:
Because in "All Digital" version the exposure is made on I.I., the
collimator position is the same in Fluoro and in Exposure mode.
The Hold function has non sense in this modality.
Description
The HOLD function permits to keep under exposure a limitation
carried out manually during the fluoro modality, on one or more
directions (base, height, iris).
The HOLD automatic collimation function is available in Spot film
modality (or in Apollo DRF version) in parallel with the automatic
collimation function and can be activated by default or manually.
Such settings can be determined by the technician during
installation. The HOLD function can never be activated when the
collimator is in Manual modality.
With Apollo DRF the imaging area selected through the joystick could
be lager or smaller respect to the area associated to the APR
examination selected on the DRF 4343, but it will always be smaller
or equal to the zoom area selected on the Apollo DRF console.
Ease of operation
To activate the HOLD automatic collimation function, select the
function key "21", besides the automatic collimation button "19".
The operating logic of the HOLD automatic collimation function is
identical to that of the automatic collimation in Spot film modality
described in the previous paragraph, except if the collimated format
is reduced during the fluoro.
In this case, when the preparation control is activated, the collimator
does not position itself on the division format, but it retains the
reduced collimation position obtained by means of joystick "48" or by
means of controls "23" and "24" during the fluoro.
When limitation is done with HOLD mode active, on control desk
display, the message:
<<HOLD reduction active>>
is generated.
The message remains on display up to the manual or automatic
limitation is resetted.

Apollo table spot film device was designed and built using highly
modern and sophisticated criteria.
This allows to obtain a very simple and efficient loading and
unloading of the cassette.
In fact, as described above, the cassette can be simply loaded or
unloaded from the load/unload window without any other additional
operations.
This allows to perform one-hand operations, considering that one
hand is always busy holding the spare cassette.
Moreover, the loading system can straighten a cassette loaded in an
approximate manner and perfectly aligned with the spot film device.

movement towards the feet side of the table (positive angles).
Close to the end run (+/-40°) the movement will automatically stop.
To obtain the vertical centering of the column with respect to the
table, move joystick "49" up or press button "12" on the side of the
table.
The virtual rotation point can be adjusted by means of buttons "9"
and "10" on the table console from the tabletop level up to 350 mm
(13.8"): button "9" increments the height of the rotation point, while
button "10" decreases the height.
WARNING:
When the angulation of the column gets to –40° or +40° a collision
between the column and the foot rest may happen. Keep under control
the position of the u-arc during column angulation to avoid this risk.
NOTE:
If the column angulation control is activated when the compressor is not
in the parking position, the angulation movement is limited.
Please refer to "Angulation movement" step described in paragraph 6.6.6.
Limitations
The angulation is inhibited when:
• lift or tilting movements are activated
• tomography function is active
• the aimed function is active
• when the following message is displayed:
<< CEIL TUBE IN FIELD >>
This indicates the presence of an accessory in the room that
could conflict with Apollo and that is not in the parking position.

Description
Description
This movement permits to move the tabletop vertically with respect to
the ground (lift).
This permits to position the examination table at a more comfortable
height to guarantee easier access to patients on stretchers.
The optimal adjustment of the table height also improves the
ergonomics of intervention of the physician on the patient.
The maximum reachable height is 1400 mm (55.1") from the ground;
for Apollo SFD and Apollo “All Digital” the minimum height depends
on the type of I.I. installed (see Mechanical features – Chapter 4).
Ease of operation
Move joystick "51" up or press button "8" to lift the tabletop.
The movement will automatically stop when the end run is reached.
APOLLO 68 (Rev. 7)

Description
The compression device is applied during examinations of the
digestive system.
The compressor is positioned by means of two distinct movements:
• Compression cone in/out movement with respect to the X-ray
beam
• Compression cone up/down movement with respect to the
tabletop.
Ease of operation
By moving joystick "54" down, the compressor cone will position itself
in the X-ray field and will then descend on the patient.
By moving the joystick up, the compressor moves upwards and away
from the X-ray field.
APOLLO 74 (Rev. 7)
USER'S MANUAL
Operating functions
When the cone comes into contact with the patient, the compression
movement is automatically halted depending on the selected force.
NOTE:
By default, compressor force when the cone leaves the park position is
always 5 kg (11.1 lbs).
WARNING:
In case of failure of the compression force detection device, a safety
circuit interrupts the compression at a value slightly higher than the
maximum force (15 kg / 33.3 lbs).

Limitations
The compressor movement is not allowed when the tomography and
stepping angio functions are active. The access to these functions
results in the movement of the compressor to the parking position.
WARNING:
Should the equipment stop when the compression cone is in contact with
the patient, it is possible to rapidly unblock the patient by removing
the cone, acting on the lever “A” of the quick release mechanism
(Figure 8).

6.6.7 Tube-
Tube-collimator group rotation
Description
The rotation movement of the tube-collimator group permits to
project the X-ray beam on a receptor different from the spot film
device or from the image intensifier.
To perform exposures by means of the tube in a position different
from 0°, select a direct work modality on the generator.
Ease of o
operation
peration
To rotate the tube-collimator group, push the unlocking handgrips
on the side of the collimator.
Push the unlocking handgrips towards the inside to position the tube
in one of the following pre-set positions:
+40° , +50°, +90°, 180°, -50° ,-40° and –90°
with respect to the centered position (0°).
By releasing the handgrips, the tube is locked.
The following message is displayed:
<< Tube not at 0° >>
NOTE:
When the tube is not in the 0° position, the fluoro control is inhibited,
while the preparation and X-ray controls are active both on the Apollo
table, and on the generator, only if the workstation relative to the direct
modality is set on the generator.

USER'S MANUAL
Operating functions
All movements are controlled via software to avoid collisions between the
equipment's components and the surrounding environment (floor, walls,
ceiling). The anti-collision system is configured via software at
installation by a service engineer who sets the room dimensions.
The parts of the table that can collide with walls, floor or ceiling are: the
image intensifier, the extremities of the main beam (corresponding to the
extremities of the tabletop), the compressor and the tube-collimator
group.
When one of these elements reaches the set security limit, the movement
stops and the following message is displayed:
<< LIMIT REACHED >>
with buzzer.
When the extremities of the main beam, the intensifier or the compressor
reach such limit, movements commands that can bring the element into
collision are suddenly inhibited. On the other hand, movement
commands that can bring the elements away from the collision point are
free.
As to the tube-collimator group, because of the particular Apollo table
lift-tilting function, are inhibited all those movements that apparently
may not be dangerous but, if they continued, could increase the risk of
collision.
In the first pair of columns are indicated the angles in which the table
(RIB) or the column (ANG) could find themselves when the limit is
reached.
"0" referred to the tilting means that the table is on the horizontal
position, "+" indicates that the table is inclined towards the vertical
position and "-" that the table is inclined towards the Trendelenburg.
"0" referred to the angulation indicates that the column is perpendicular
to the table, "+" indicates that the column is inclined towards the feet
and "-" that it is inclined towards the head.

Operating functions
When the room where the device is installed has irregularities in its
geometry that make necessary supplemental anticollision measures, the
Apollo table can be protected against the risk of collision with these
geometrical irregularities of the room.
Depending from the specific needs it is possible to implement light
barrier sensors or antenna switches that when activated prevent table
components from hitting obstacles of the room.
Once the anticollision sensor is activated, the movement in progress is
stopped and a message is displayed:
<< LIMIT BARRIER >>
with an intermittent buzzer sound.
To exit this condition and restore normal operation of the system, it will
be possible to activate only the movement that had generated the "limit
barrier" alarm in the opposite direction.
All other commands (joystick on console and keys on the on-board
keypad) are disabled until the message "limit barrier" is removed.
Table top movement is still active.
If the limit barrier is activated in the following conditions:
• switch on of the system
• access to tomography functionality
• access to angiographic functionality
• during execution of a Tomography test
• during execution of a step angiography test
• movement to reach a stored position by means of command "0".
the movement is stopped and the active functionality, if any, is reset.
In this condition no joystick or button of the on board keyboard is active,
then to exit from this "limit barrier" lock it is necessary to proceed with a
"bypass" procedure as outlined here below.
Keeping pressed at the same time keys F4 and F5, positioned in the lower
end of the display, ALL movement commands by joystick or on board
keyboard are enabled, making possible to start any movement.
This "bypass" procedure is always possible when the "limit barrier"
condition has been reached.
In all cases, leaving the alarm condition, the table will enter spot film
device modality; it will then be necessary to repeat the necessary
procedure if a different modality is needed.
WARNING:
This "bypass" procedure can be very dangerous since a wrong command
can cause any part of the table to hit the obstacle in the room. Before
giving any movement command it is necessary to check carefully which
movement will bring the table far away from the obstacle. In any case
always activate the movement with great care in short pulses.

Description
Apollo is pre-set to perform stepping angios in digital modality. The
digital stepping angio modality allows the optimisation of
angiography examinations performed with traditional methods.
In fact, if this examination is carried out correctly, it permits to
obtain a complete check of the limb's vascular system, with a
reduced quantity of contrast liquid given to the patient.
This result is obtained thanks to the RX Tube automatic movement –
an image receptor whose function is to follow the contrast liquid
inside the vessels.
Thanks to the technologies employed, the patient receives a reduced
dose of X-rays - besides a reduced amount of injected contrast liquid.
Moreover, the examination stress is reduced as the patient is not
moving. The mechanical components are in fact responsible for the
centering of the anatomies.

Ease of operation
Press the control on the left on the pedal control for the emission of
fluoro radiations.
In case Apollo is equipped with the optional function “I.I. lift” (N.A.
on All Digital and DR-DRF versions), when the fluoro control is
activated, the I.I. moves to the minimum distance position from the
patient tabletop, according to the installation settings.
This occurs only if, either no cassette is in the spot film device or, in
case a cassette is in the parking position and its base dimensions do
not exceed 30 cm (10" for cassettes in inches).
Limitations
The fluoro function is inhibited when the following conditions are
present:
• The cassette is not in the parking position
• The division selection is not performed
• Tube not at 0°
• Preparation control is active
• "Direct" workspace is selected.
NOTE:
When the I.I. lift movement is activated during fluoroscopy and SFD
mode is active, the switch time between fluoro and radiography can be
significantly longer than in standard operating conditions, since the
system needs time to lower the I.I. and reposition the cassette.
Description
Radiography is the primary function of any X-ray equipment.
Ease of operation
Moving the left control on the pedal command to position I, all
functions for the preparation of the X-ray tube for X-ray emissions
are enabled.
Concurrently, the equipment pre-sets some parts to receiving
radiations.
By selecting position II, X-rays are emitted.
The activation of the preparation control, stops all movements
included the collimator's manual movement. During the tomography
program, only the angulation is active.
Description
This function is allowed if Apollo table is equipped with relevant kit
only. In addition a Wall Bucky with Sensing tray for automatic
cassette size identification must be present in the system.
In this configuration will be possible to perform exposure on Wall
Bucky with automatic collimation. SID will be adjustable thanks of
the Apollo column movement.
Ease of operation
Wall Bucky mode enable
To enable the Wall Bucky mode is necessary:
- turn the tube of 180°
- select Wall Bucky working place on generator console
NOTE:

7 DIAGNOSIS
The Apollo table software is pre-set for the self diagnosis of the
equipment.
When a diagnosis condition is detected the table movements stop and the
accessories controls are inhibited. A warning is shown on the display
together with an acoustic signal.
There are 2 main types of warnings:
Functional alarms
This group's warnings are generated by functional errors due to the
operator's wrong manoeuvres or by external accessories.
As these warnings do not generate risk or danger conditions for the
patient, the operator or the equipment itself, they can be reset
without powering off the equipment.
By moving joystick "49" down twice, the first time it stops the
acoustic signal, the second time it resets the warning.

but also maintenance and checks on a regular basis. This precautions
will guarantee a safe and efficient functioning of the equipment.
The check carried out directly by the operator are the following:
• functionality of light indicators and LEDs located on the control desk
• functionality of joysticks and buttons located on the control desk and
on the panel on the side of the table
• correspondence between the irradiated field and collimator light field
and alignment of the latter with respect with the spot film device
• correspondence irradiated field – image receptor format
• functionality of compression cone release device
• integrity of equipment and labels
• absence of contrast liquid residuals
• check smooth flow and noise of movements.
WARNING:
In case of irregularities, high noisiness of motorised componets, or
