Plot of graph
In this experiment, the decay curve of the metastable state Ba−137m of the isotope Ba−137 is
recorded and the half-life is determined. Ba−137 is a decay product of the long-lived parent substance
Cs−137, whose half-life is approx. 30 years. Cs−137 decays into Ba−137 whereby radiation is emitted. In
95 % of the decays, this is a transition into the metastable state Ba−137m, which passes into the ground
state of Ba−137 via decay with a half-life of only 2.551 min. The parent substance is stored in a
Cs/Ba−137m isotope generator. The metastable isotopes Ba−137m produced in the decay of Cs−137 are
eluted from the isotope generator with an acidified sodium chloride solution at the beginning of the
experiment. Then the activity of the elute is recorded.
Conclusion
In a conclusion, the objectives of this experiment was achieved. The characteristic of source
radioactive Cs-137 and Ba-137 m was determined. Then, the half-life of Cs-137 and Ba-137 m was
calculated. The half-life of Ba-137 is 160s and the theoretical value is 156s. The percentage error of this
experiment is 2.56%.
Question
5. Compute your percent error by comparing the value you obtained by the graph and by the
calculation with the accepted value of the half-life of 137Bam.
