Objectives
1. To find the relation between variables.
1. To determine the equation relates variables.

2. Material and Apparatus

1. Water.
2. Graduated cylinder.
3. Stop watch.
4. Tank.

3. Description of Equipment

Fig(1) : Tank and stopwatch

4. Procedure
1. The height of water in the tank should be noted, (H1).
2. Open the tap and collected the water in the gradually cylinder
then record the volume and the time required to collect volume by
stop watch, and measuring the actual discharge
V
Q= T

Where: Q = the actual discharge,

V = volume, and
T = time.
3. Measuring the highest of water in the bank after closed the tap,
(H1).
4. Repeat step 1 to 3 for there to four.
5. Draw the necessary graphs between Q and H on a grid or log –
log papers.
5. Example 1
In a laboratory experiment, it has been found that relation
between the height of water (H) in a tank and the discharge (Q) are
as given. Plot the date on a regular grid paper and determine the
equation (Q = Ah + b)?
Solution:
Q−Q 3.3−2.2 H(cm) Q(Lt/hr)
a= H−H = 0.06−0.03 = 36.6˟ 10 -5
18 280

15 240

12 200

4 9 0.09 160 4.4
5 6 0.06 120 3.3
6 3 0.03 80 2.2
6. Example 2
In a laboratory experiment on a tank of water it has been found
that the relation between the height of water (H) and (Q)
discharging from the bottom of the tank is as given. Plot the data
on a log-log paper and determine the equation (Q = KHn)?
Solution: H (cm) Q(cm3/sec)
8 250
7 230
5 200
4 175
3 150
2 125
1.5 110

If theoretical relation can be expressed as, Q = k H n , then

by plotting (Q) vs. (H) k and n can be easily. Taking logarithms of
sides of Eq.
Q = K HN
Log (Q) = log (k) + log (Hn)
Or , log (Q) = log (k) + n log (H)
Which is the equation of a straight line in slop-intercept from if the
variable are (Q) and log (H). the slope of the y-axis intercept is the
value of log (k). to find k, simply raise to the log (K) power. Or if
a theoretical relation can be expressed as, Q = kHN , then by
plotting (Q) vs. (H), k and n can be easily found on a log-log paper.
7. Example 3
In a laboratory experiment it has been found that the relation
between the height of water (H) in a tank the discharge (Q) are as
given. Plot the data on a regular grid paper and determine the
equation (Q = Ah + b )? (a = tan ɵ)?

8. Example 4
In a laboratory experiment on a tank of water it has been
found that the relation between the height of water (H) and (Q)
discharging from the bottom of the tank is as given. Plot the data
on a log-log paper and determine the equation (Q = KHn)?

10. Discussion
From all these figures, one may observe that the value of Q
increase with the increase of H values.
