Linear Equation in Two Variables – 1

 Linear Equation means the equation which has power of variable as 1. Eg: 2x – 5 = 0 (Power of x = 1)
 Standard form of Linear Equation in Two variables is ax + by + c = 0
 In an Equation if we Add, Subtract, Multiply or Divide both sides by the same number then the values on
LHS and RHS will remain equal
 To find solution of the equation, we need to find the value of both variables that satisfy the equation
Eg: 2x + 4y = 20

Let y = 1, 2x + 4(1) = 20 Let y = 2, Let y = 3, 2x + 4(3) = 20

2x + 4 = 20 2x + 4(2) = 20 2x + 12 = 20
2x = 20 – 4 2x + 8 = 20 2x = 20 – 12
2x = 16 2x = 20 – 8 2x = 8
x=8 2x = 12 X=4
(x,y) = (8,1) Ordered Pair X=6 (x,y) = (4,3)
(x,y) = (6,2)

Let y = 10, 2x + 4(10) = 20 Let x = 2, 2(2) + 4y = 20

2x + 40 = 20 4+ 4y = 20
2x = 20 – 40 4y = 20 – 4
2x = -20 4y = 16
X = -10 Y =4
(x,y) =( -10, 10) (x,y) = (2,4)

 The Graph of Linear Equation in Two Variables is a straight line in the Cartesian Coordinate Plane

Example 1 : Write each of the following equations in the form ax + by + c = 0 and indicate the values of a, b and c in
each case: (i) 2x + 3y = 4.37 (ii) x – 4 = √ 3 y (iii) 4 = 5x – 3y (iv) 2x = y

Solution: Comparing the equation with Standard form: ax + by + c = 0

(i) 2x + 3y = 4.37 (iii) 4 = 5x – 3y

2x + 3y – 4.37 = 0 5x – 3y -4 = 0
∴ a = 2, b = 3 and c = – 4.37 a = 5, b = -3, c = -4
(ii) x – 4 = √3 y
x - √3 y – 4 = 0
a = 1, b = - √ 3, c = -4 (iv) 2x = y
2x - y + 0 = 0
a = 2, b = -1, c = 0

Example 2 : Write each of the following as an equation in two variables:

(i) x = –5 (ii) y = 2 (iii) 2x = 3 (iv) 5y = 2

(i) x = –5 3) 2x = 3
∴ x + 0y = –5 2x – 3 = 0
∴ x + 0y + 5 = 0 2x + 0y – 3 = 0

(ii) y = 2
0x + y = 2 (iv) 5y = 2
0x + y -2 = 0 0x + 5y = 2
0x + 5y – 2 = 0
EXERCISE 4.1

1. The cost of a notebook is twice the cost of a pen. Write a linear equation in two variables to
represent this statement. (Take the cost of a notebook to be ` x and that of a pen to be ` y)

Let Cost of Notebook = Rs x

Let Cost of Pen = Rs. y

x = 2y

x – 2y + 0 = 0
