Department of Education: General Chemistry I

This document is a self-learning module for General Chemistry I provided by the Department of Education Region I Division of Ilocos Sur in the Philippines. It provides an overview of the module and its importance for learning during the pandemic. The first lesson defines matter and its different states. It discusses extensive and intensive properties, as well as physical and chemical properties. It also differentiates between pure substances, elements, compounds, and mixtures including homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures. Methods for separating mixtures are outlined.

SELF LEARNING MODULE

IN
GENERAL CHEMISTRY I 11

School: Narvacan Catholic School

Not intended for printing.

OVERVIEW

How are you? Hoping that you are in a good condition! Always
remember that you should always be thankful to the blessings that
the Lord gives to you. You should always remember the dos and don’ts
in this pandemic. You should always have some bunch of care to
yourself and to your love ones. I hope as soon as possible we could see
each other again face- to-face.

The Self Learning Module in Science- GENERAL CHEMISTRY

I that you are holding now is the new way in the teaching-learning
process. This is also a new weapon in education that supports you in
facing the new system of learning in this pandemic time. I hope that
you will use the SLM in the right way and give it importance in order
for you to finish all the given works.

FIRST SEMESTER
SELF LEARNING MODULE 1

LESSON TITLE:

MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCIES:

 use the properties of matter to identify substances
and to separate them.
 describe various simple separation techniques such
as distillation, chromatography.

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

 Distinguish between extensive and intensive
properties of matter
 Distinguish between physical and chemical
properties of matter
 Describe separation techniques for mixture and
compounds.
 Act with sense of awareness on the proper uses of
substances.
 Provide example of the different properties

LESSON PROPER

Welcome to General Chemistry I.

Short Discussion

All that you see, what you touch – even the

air that you cannot see – are matter.

Matter can be described based on its state or phase,

which are- solid, liquid, gas, plasma and bose-Einstein
condensate. Matter is anything that has mass and
volume. Mass is the amount of matter and volume is the
space it occupies.

The phases of matter undergo to

the different phase changes:
 Melting – solid to liquid
Example : Ice to water
 Vaporization- liquid to gas
Example: boiling of water to gas
state
 Condensation- gas to
liquid
Example: water vapour into
liquid water
 Freezing- liquid to solid
Example: water to ice
 Sublimation- solid to gas
Example: Naphthalene to gas
state
 Deposition- gas to solid
Example: fire extinguisher

How can you say that one substance is different from another? By
means of their characteristic properties that matter have its
characteristic properties.

A. Physical and Chemical Properties

Physical Properties: Chemical Properties:

- one that can be - one that can be
observed without observed with
changing the changing the
composition of the composition
substance  Flammability
 color Example:
 solubility
Burning paper- changed
 density
the composition for being a
 melting point
paper to ashes.
 boiling point
 volatility
 viscosity
 conductivity

B. Extensive and Intensive Properties

Extensive Property
-depending on the amount of matter, means that the more
matter there is, the greater is its mass, volume, size and
length.

Intensive Property
-depend on the type of matter includes density, color, physical
state, meting, boiling and freezing points and thermal
conductivity.

As of August 4, 2020 by United Nation data the Philippines population
is 109,710,763. Given the large number of data, the population is often
grouped based on different criteria like gender, age and location for easier
study. Likewise, since there are lots of different types of matter exhibiting
different properties, they are classified into groups for easier analysis.

Pure Substance: Elements and Compounds

Pure Substance is characterized by an unchanging or specific
composition.

 Elements: made up of only one kind of atom, the building block of

matter.
 Compound: made up of different kinds of properties or a combination
of two or more elements.

Mixtures: Homogeneous and Heterogeneous

Mixtures it is combination of two or more substances.
 Homogeneous: mixtures whose components are cannot be
distinguished- solution. Example: hot water and coffee
 Heterogeneous: mixtures whose components are visible or not evenly
dissolved. Example: Fruit salad/ Pinakbet

Mixtures can be separated into its composition by physical means.

1. Filtration
2. Evaporation
3. Distillation
4. Chromatography
5. Sublimation
