Podcasting was, in fact, developed in the same year, when Adam Curry, former MTV video jockey, and
software developer Dave Winer, coded a program known as iPodder, which enabled them to download
Internet radio broadcasts to their iPods. Curry now hosts The Daily Source Code, one of the most popular
podcasts on the Internet.
It was a year later in 2005 that the big companies started recognising the opportunity - Apple leading the
way with iTunes 4.9, the first update with native support for podcasts. And speaking of recognition, the
very same year, George W. Bush became the first President to have his weekly address delivered as a
podcast. 2005 is also the year in which “Podcast” is declared “Word of the Year ” by the New Oxford
American Dictionary.
By 2013 Apple announces 1 billion podcast subscribers and fast-forward to 2019 and we have 165 million
people having listened to a podcast , with 90 million Americans listening monthly . It is the new book,
the new way to gain information and the new way to educate yourself as well as a way to escape and listen
to fantasy and fiction. It’s the new car radio
Wenbin Fang wrote in December 2020 that Google reported up to 10 million monthly searches for “podcast”
via the search engine giant that year, it’s safe to assume that the popularity of podcasts will only grow greater in
the coming years. Millions of people also search for more specific terms like “best podcasts” or “most popular
podcasts” and “short podcasts” in order to uncover shows that may strike their fancy.
Why do a podcast? – it is estimated that you could earn anything between £0 to £75,000 per episode and it was
reported in May 2020, by the Wall Street Journal that Joe Rogan sold his podcast rights to Spotify for more than
$100 million!
