Lesson 1: The Eyes, Nose, Ears

Guide Card
Introduction
Hello! I’m Eyera Matangbaka. My friends used to call me Eye-
Eye. We love playing hide and seek especially during full moon.
Do you know which part of my body I use to find my playmates?
Yes, I use my bright eyes to quickly find them.
You also have eyes, just like me. Likewise, you are indeed
lucky because you’re able to see all the beautiful things that surround you.
Do you want to know the different parts of the eye? Come! Join me as I
visit the world of the eyes to learn more about their parts that help us see.
Come on! Let’s, learn and enjoy!!

Learning Objectives
• Describe the parts and functions of the sense organs of the human body.
• Enumerate the healthful habits to protect the sense organs.

Pre-Test: What I Know

Before we go on with our journey into the world of the eyes, let us first
arrange the letters below to form the words which will serve as our guide during
our travel.
Are you ready?

What’s New
Each human has 5 sense organs. These are the skin, ears, nose, tongue and
eyes. We use our eyes for seeing. They are the reason why we are able to
distinguish which are pretty and ugly, clean and dirty, organized and messy,
bright and dark.
Our eyes help us a lot in our daily lives that’s why we have to take good care
of them.
Some of the things that we can do are as follows:
1. Read in a place with enough light.
2. Keep them away from sharp and pointed objects.
3. Do not rub them when they are itchy, wash them with clean water
instead.
4. Stop reading when you’re inside a moving vehicle.
5. Eat more yellow fruits and vegetables which are rich in Vitamin A.

Discussion of Activity
Our eyes have different parts and each part has its function and they are
as follows:

CORNEA- is the transparent part that covers the front portion of the eye.

SCLERA- is the white part of the eyes that surrounds the cornea.

IRIS- is the round colored part of the eye.

PUPIL- is a hole located at the center of the iris, that allows light to strike the retina.

LENS- is located behind the iris and pupil. It focuses the light and images on the
retina.

RETINA- is a thin layer of tissue that lines the back of the eye on the inside. It
receives light that the lens has focused, and converts the light into
neutral signals.

VITREOUS HUMOUR- is the transparent gelatinous tissue filling the eyeball behind
the lens.

OPTIC NERVE- transfers visual information from the retina to the centers of the
brain.

2
Parts of the Ear and their Functions
Hi kids! How are you doing? By the way, I am Earl. I’m fond
of listening classical music using my ears. I feel happy especially
when my Mom sings for me. How about you? What are the
sounds that give joy to your heart?
I know you have learned a lot in your journey with Eyera.
Now, I also want you to join me as I visit the world of the ear.
Let us discover how the different parts of the ear work together so we can
hear soft and loud sounds everywhere. Let us find out the things we can do to
protect our ears. Come and learn with me.

Learning Objectives
• Describe the parts and functions of the sense organs of the human body.
• Enumerate the healthful habits to protect the sense organs.

PARTS OF THE EAR

We use our ears for hearing. They have different parts that work together so
we could hear the sounds around us. Pinna is the outer part of the ear and is
made of ridged cartilage covered by skin where we can put on our earrings. It
collects sound that passes through the ear canal. The ear canal is a tube-like part
of the ear where the earwax is form. It is a passage comprised of bone and skin
leading to the eardrum. The eardrum is a thin piece of skin-like tissue that's
stretched tight — like a drum — across the opening between the ear canal and
the middle ear. The outer ear funnels sound waves into the ear canal that hit the
eardrum and make it vibrate. There are three tiny bones connected at the back
of the eardrum. These are the anvil, hammer and stirrup. The cochlea is a portion
of the inner ear that looks like a snail shell. It receives sound in the form of
vibration, which are taken up to the brain to be interpreted. The auditory nerve
also known as the acoustic nerve, is the sensory nerve that transfers auditory
information from the cochlea to the brain.

3
Parts of the Nose and Their Functions

Hello kids. My name is Noselyn. I spend my free time in planting flowering

plants. I have my own garden beside our house. It’s a very relaxing place for me
because it’s where my bright eyes can see the colorful flowers and my ears can
hear the beautiful sound of nature. It’s a lovely place where my nose can smell
the fragrance of sampaguita, camia and rosal.

LEARNING COMPETENCIES
• Describe the parts and functions of the sense organs of the human body.
• Enumerate the healthful habits to protect the sense organs.

Parts of the Nose

We use our nose for breathing and smelling. Just like the eyes and ears,
our nose also have parts that work together. Nostrils are the external opening of
the nose. When you inhale air through your nostrils, the air enters the nasal
passages and travels into your nasal cavity. Inside the nostrils are hairs that filter
the air and block the foreign particles or dirt that get inside the nose. The nasal
cavity is the inside of your nose. It is lined with a mucus membrane that helps
keep your nose moist by making mucus so you won't get nosebleeds from a dry
nose. Olfactory nerve is the nerve of the nose that sends message to the brain.

Activities
I. Identify whether the statement is RIGHT or WRONG. Write your answer on the
blank.
__________1. Read in a place with good light.

_____5. The tongue needs to be cleaned from time to time.

We maintain cleanliness to make our body healthy and strong. We need

to take care of our body to stay well and healthy. As part of our body, we need
to care of our tongue. Tongue problems may occur if we do not clean our
tongue. These problems may affect the movement of the tongue and may
cause pain. Tongue movement disorders may result in speech difficulties or
difficulty in moving food during chewing and swallowing.
*Read paragraph about the parts and the functions of the tongue. Its tells
how the tongue works.
The tongue is the sense organ that helps us taste the food we put inside our
mouth. The tongue has special kind of nerve cells that can sense the tastes of
food. Different parts of the tongue ave the ability to sense the different tastes.
The nerve cells (sensory cells) are in tiny pockets called taste buds. The taste
buds react to the chemicals of wet food. Nerve cells carry messages to the
brain which tell us the taste of the food.

12
Here are the proper ways of taking care of our tongue:
1. Keep your mouth clean.
2. Brush your teeth and tongue after every meal.
3. Avoid eating very hot food. It may scald the tongue.
