Ancient Civilizations- Serbia :

Lepenski Vir- The first settlement in Europe. Lepenski Vir, the most modern European urban
settlement, is our most famous, largest and most important Mesolithic and Neolithic archeological site.
It is located on the right bank of the Danube in the Djerdap gorge. During the construction of the
Djerdap hydroelectric power plant, between 1965 and 1970, a fishing and hunting settlement was
discovered. During the excavations, seven successive settlements and 136 buildings (both residential
and sacral) were discovered, which were built in the period from around 6500 to 5500 BC. The main
leader of the research of this site was Professor Dr. Dragoslav Srejović, a famous archaeologist and
academic.

Ćele kula-Built-in heads of Serbian soldiers

It is estimated that about 10,000 Turkish soldiers were killed in the battle of Cegra in 1809. In order to
justify such a loss, Hurshid Pasha from Nis ordered that the skins from the heads of the killed Serbs be
skinned, filled with straw and sent to Constantinople, which was a centuries-old Turkish practice. Then,
in order to intimidate the Serbs, he ordered that a stone tower be built on the eastern side of Nis as a
warning and that the remaining skulls of the fallen soldiers be built into its walls "so that the middle of
the tower was simple, made of stone and lime and the heads of Serbian soldiers they turn into the field
and ascend outside. "
