Artificial insemination is an alternative to natural breeding where semen is collected from male animals and inserted into the reproductive tract of females. The semen is collected, diluted with sugars, salts, glycerol and antibiotics, divided into small amounts and frozen in straws. When performing artificial insemination, the straw is thawed and the semen is deposited into the uterus of a female in heat using a pipette inserted through the vagina and guided by a hand in the rectum. For success, insemination must occur at the optimal time during estrus.
