Final Placement Report 2006-2007: Indian Institute of Management Calcutta
Introduction
IIM Calcutta wrapped up its Final Placements season for 2006-07 in great style, with
records tumbling all over the place. IIMC lived up to its record of excellent placements
by placing the largest batch of students across all IIMs (251 this year) in the shortest time
(5 days, Day 1 of Slot 2) across all IIMs and for IIMC. It also set new parameters to judge
the success of B-School placements in the process.
were in Middle management by the Aditya Birla Group and that of Foreign Engagement
Manager by IT majors Infosys and Cognizant. The end of the laterals season saw close to
120 offers being made making it the most successful laterals across B schools in India
this year.
The other significant change noticed in laterals this year has been the wide range of
domains from which companies have recruited. Whereas laterals was earlier the
exclusive hunting ground of the IT companies , this year saw companies, both domestic
and international, recruiting from steel (Arcelor-Mittal), manufacturing (Trident),
FMCG (Pepsi), retail (TESCO, M.H. Alshaya, Reliance), real estate (Feedback Ventures),
consulting (KPMG, PWC), general management (Tata Strategic Management Group),
energy (Acme), financial (Citi Financial, Standard Chartered), and pharmaceutical (Dr
Reddy's and Pfizer) sectors.
India Calling
The total number of foreign accepted offers reached an all time high of 58. Along with
this, a heartening aspect of the placement season has been the preference shown by
many students for domestic offers. Over a dozen students rejected overseas offers to stay
back in India though in the same industries and companies, pointing towards a healthy
trend in recruitments at the top B-school. This is mainly due to the booming growth
story of India and the surge of the investment banks and consulting companies into
Indian soil.
IIMC was also happy to welcome a number of leading companies to the campus for the
first time. Among them are ING (Netherlands), Bain Consulting, Trikona (Real Estate
and Private Equity), CIC (Real Estate and Private Equity), Value Partners (Strategy
Consulting) and Optiver (Market Maker).
Overall IIMC witnessed a large number of very good companies from all major industry
sectors coming to recruit its students and this promises excellent career prospects for
graduate of IIMC. It is clear that the managerial talent at IIMC is now globally
recognized. We are seeing a steady increase in the number of companies interested in
recruiting from IIMC. In addition to domestic appointments, IIMC graduates will be
taking up positions in US/New York, UK/London, Europe, the Middle East
(Dubai/Kuwait), Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo. IIMC is committed to developing
its excellent relations with the recruiting companies and expects increasing numbers of
companies to come for recruitment in the future. Taken together, the PPOs, Laterals and
Final offers have established a very satisfactory record for the IIMC batch of 2007.
