Nishino Breathing Method And Zhan Zhuang

By Matt, September 1, 2006 in General Discussion

Hi Matt,

The advice I have consistently come across in the writings of Wang Xiang Zhai and students
of his is to breath naturally. I remain grateful for this advice, because the expression of one's
natural being is where its at for me, and every method seems at best temporary. Thats not to
say that methods have no potential to speed things up in the right person at the right time,
but they have never borne out long-term benefit for me.

One approach that I came upon fairly early, was to simply recognize that every breath, no
matter how halting, is natural. Staying in that recognition, which is more a letting go than an
exertion, is the most powerful "technique" that I have ever tried. I ended up trying other
techniques since, thinking that perhaps they held more promise, but from my current
perspective all of those techniques were a step down from the recognition of natural breath.

That said, if you feel drawn to breathing techniques, thats probably what you should do.

A little "addition" to what Todd mentions... but a slightly different point... there are even
many variations of visualizations in standing practice without being connected to breathing...
and even in this case I'D first start standing "naturally" and simply listening to the body... to
its longings/yearnings/etc. etc. etc. You might wish to add visualizations later to a larger

1
extent to see if it makes any change... but I feel starting with "simple" standing, that is not
that simple at all gives one a proper fundament for experiments later on...

and one thing to mention: there is a difference between visualizations for leading energy or
whatever and those that are meant to keep your posture!

Hi Matt,

The advice I have consistently come across in the writings of Wang Xiang Zhai and students
of his is to breath naturally. <...>

Todd

The problem with this advice is what does 'naturally' mean. Some may think it means
abdominal breathing, sometimes natural is really reverse breathing. Sometimes people have
no idea what it means to take a deep breath because of restrictions in the torso and repressed
emotions. If i'm exerting force, I *naturally* pressurize my abdomen. So when someone says
breathe naturally...it doesn't necessarily mean what you think it means, so one could be
completely off the mark as far as training is concerned. The point is you have to really
question, study and test your knowledge to get to the point where you understand what
naturally means.

2
Personally, I think Wang Xiang Zhai did alot more with his breath than he's letting on with
that statement..

I'm not a very experienced stander, but I have looked into a lot of breathing methods, and
have used them during standing.

There are a few things to consider... One of the things I found valuable when standing (this is
usually a post practice 15 minutes hands at the side type of stance) is to imagine yourself
expanding and contracting with the breath and to physically do it. It's quite subtle - as you
breathe in you raise a little from your crown and your stomach and lower back expand then
as you exhale your stomach, back and crown slightly contract in towards your LTT. This feels
quite natural and unforced when the LTT is pulsing...

Another thing I've learnt is to create a reflex reaction where your body takes a deep breath
automatically... I remember writing a post a long time ago explaining how to do this, I'll try
and find it in a bit. The feeling is a bit like yawning - your lungs take a full, deep breath
without you conciously engaging any muscles. After learning how to set off the reflex, it takes
a couple of weeks to be able to do it spontaneously and without doing the reflex technique.

Eventually it's possible to combine the two techniques together - you make the intention of
expanding and contracting from the LTT as you breathe and then just notice the reflex action
doing it naturally.

When standing I was taught to let the breath be natural

meaning don't focus on your breath let it happen.

Let it go where it wants to.

Let go - Don't "DO" anything. Just stand - relax.

I think this type of instruction is why you don't see many 'westerners' with any skills to speak
of. I know Fong Ha is a big proponent of the 'just stand there, you're already an expert
approach, etc.' but it doesn't seem to doing much for people. No disrespect intended, just
saying as a whole there aren't very many greats that were born from simply standing. Wang
became great by training really really hard in Xing Yi. So if one wants to be like him, it
follows one should train like he did. And there is alot of breath training and 'doing' in that
system.

Hi Matt,

4
I do ZZ and aikido. I think zz training is an awesome complementary practice to aikido and
develops internal power and relaxation. As far as breathing, I don't control it. I do natural or
abdominal breathing. inhale, abdomen expands, exhale abdomen contracts.

Same breathing as in zazen or the way a baby breathes..naturally.

From what I understand from Ken Cohen, Wang Zhang Xai taught different methods to
different students and yiquan does have a system of sparring. For internal power
development, I think it would be best to get with an authentic internal MA teacher who has
developed those things. Otherwise your just guessing.

Both parties might be right. You should breathe naturally. But we (westerners?) were never
taught how to breathe. We are top breathers. We are nearly in a state of hyperventillation,
but it is so normal we don't notice. Natural breathing is Much slower then what we usually
do.

my two cents,

I never met Fong Ha so I wouldn't judge the ability of his students

or him for that matter. We really have no way to judje what anything is doing for anyone else
except for ourself. Where did they start from - how much did they improve.

Even if I were to see Fong Ha I would ony be able to see the external unless I

was at his level or beyond it.

The teacher I learned from in his seventies is no slouch and quite profficient in martial arts

fajing etc. I couldn't - wouldn't rate his students who I never met who are in China.

As for myself when I met him I was already breathing from my belly.

6
He had me standing for one and one half hours each time.

I was never told I was already an expert.

I believe it is more of a taoist approach - nothing forced - everything in it's time.

Some people are natural athletes, fighters etc. Some have to work at it.

What is your purpose for standing. Is it to have power so you can fight someone

or to root and be healthy. Mine is the latter.

I think the genious of the internal martial arts is that they are both the same. Healthy
movement turns out to also be martial. Unhealthy movement is not martial. If you study
applying your martial art, it turns out that it helps your form too. You can't neutralize a force
without a root and you certainly can't express any kind of force without the same body
mechanics that makes your chi flow.

My personal take on the visualizations of ichuan is that when properly done, they force the
proper body mechanics. But you have to really feel it, not just imagine it. Mind and body are
truly one in that sense. Other martial arts have weapons work that also force proper body
mechanics such as the long pole and heavy guando. Without the proper extension and
foundation you will just get hurt. Doing the weapons work teaches your body how to move.

7
In these systems, visualizations are not emphasized as much. They still have them, but it's
not that necessary..that's just my observations.

Also, Matt, when you look at this guys breathing exercise to breathe from the bottom of the
feet and make the chi to the top of the head, my take is that if you really do the visualization,
you will automatically do a reverse breath, in order to draw energy upwards..can't get the
same feeling with a regular abdominal breath..

I'm personally with thaddeus on this... 'naturally' is such a hypnotic word (especially for the
Taoist community). When people say it they picture or feel some ideal. Whether the ideal is
'in the momentness' or 'in line with the way of nature' or whatever doesn't really matter... the
word naturally is like one of those advertising gimmicks - it brings about a feeling that is
agreeable.

If naturally means, as Todd says, 'as it is in the moment' - then again there are several
considerations - for example the moment prior to beginning an exercises is also important -
you could be anxious, excited, relaxed, introspective, in love, calm etc. each of these would
bring about a different 'natural' breathing style - which is the right one? I see people all the
time breathing with the very top of their chest, quite rapidly - it's very natural to them (I find
it hard to replicate).

I think a lot of practises aim to teach the body something new - whether it be a new way of
directing energy or awareness, or body mechanics or muscular co-ordinations. From what I
know about learning to learn something new, you have to do something new... otherwise
you're not learning. I understand that there are people that try to train their awareness by
not doing anything new - and that's also a skill (and not necessarily connected with
standing).

8
There are other complexities - for example a child learning a language in a class will be far
less fluent than a child learning the language in the environment it's 'naturally' used in. The
difference here is the use of the subconscious - learning in a class, forcing a certain breathing
pattern, moving into the 'correct' position all involves the conscious mind - which only has
the ability to pay attention to 7 +or- 2 bits of information at a time. Some would say that a
child learning a new language in the country that it's used is learning the language 'naturally'
(which in my view doesn't really mean anything)... the difference is that the child would be
learning the way s/he learnt hir first language which is a difficult process to duplicate
consciously.

When I was showing my grandfather how to breath from the belly I didn't tell him to
contract and expand his diaphragm (that's conscious learning). Instead I asked him to relax
and move his attention down into his body - this is the way you can communicate with the
subconscious - as he kept breathing lower and lower I asked him to imagine a balloon in his
belly that contracts letting the breath out and then relaxes allowing the the air to re-enter. He
was now breathing in his LTT 'naturally' - I could talk to him and completely distract his
attention away from the breathing and his belly still did all the work.

So for myself I use several rules - if there is a goal in a practise then I somehow impart the
intention to my body (in stages) until the goal is achieved without conscious effort.

If the goal is to not make any goals then that's a different story - it's going into a deep Yin
state and I have my way of doing that.

9
The point is that standing has a rather specific set of goals - as far as I know letting things 'be
as they are' is not one of them, until one reaches a level where you can stand for many many
hours with no effort.

Matt,

Could you tell where more information may be found on actual Nishino breathing
trainings?? Book is currently not available from Amazon (out of stock).. and his website
http://www.nishinojuku.com/english doesn't contain much details of it..

Nishino spends about 90% of the book making a case for what KI is and why we should
cultivate.

I've never seen any book with any real details. Even something like 'bring the Ki up your legs'
is not really a detail, it's just some kind of clue that is only corroborated after you're at a level
where you don't need a book.

I've had the book for some time now and will work it into a routine of some kind, but it looks
and sounds an awful lot like zhan zhuang. Interesting, Nishino also seems to have developed
quite a formidable empty force ability judging from the pictures.

Peace,

Matt said:

Nishino says to focus your breathing on the soles of the feet. He says you will eventually feel
the KI rising up your legs, where you then to circulate it up the spine, to the crown on inhale.
Then pause, holding your breath for moment, then bring the KI down the front and return it
to the feet. Inhale and exhale through the soles of the feet.

Thanks Matt,

Did he mention any meridians which he using to circulate breath energy? Like "down the
front" could be done in several ways..

Sokushin Breathing is one of the basic exercises of the Nishino Breathing Method.
Inhalation is through the soles of the feet and, after energy has been circulated
throughout the body, exhalation is, again, through the soles. In fact, you are breathing
through the nose and exhale through the mouth, but if you do so with an awareness of the
soles of the feet, you will feel energy rising upward from the feet to the knees and the
thighs to Tanden.
Visualize a great tree sucking up water from the earth. Energy that reaches Tanden is
steadily propelled upward along the spine. This energy in turn eventually reaches
Hyakue.
At this point, lightly hold your breath, and then - still on the in-breath-bring the energy
from Hyakue to Tanden frontally, along the central line. Finally, while exhaling, direct the
energy downward through the soles of the feet into the earth.

Because breathing is the link between the universe (exterior) and oneself (interior), it has
the potential to trigger a grand liberation within us. At the Nishino Juku, we frequently
hear people saying things such as: "After taking up the Nishino Breathing Method
(NBM), my inter-personal relationships have gotten a lot smoother!", "Negotiations now
come out just as I would like!", "That difficult bank financing has been taken care of!", "I
just seem to be getting lucky!", etc.

People who experience frequent troubles usually complain that "Nothing ever turns out
right" or "Everything always backfires on me". These predicaments are the result of a
failure to connect properly to one's surroundings. While hurrying along in a trance, such
people have become isolated. Excessive pondering and brooding is also absolutely
useless.

Of course, it is sometimes necessary to deliberate over one's course of action, but

brooding clouds the brain just when clarity is needed for action. To offer a physical
explanation, such people are breathing with their shoulders alone, and never achieve
deep respiration. In any case, when a person's "ki" is calm and settled, the body is
restored to normal healthy functioning. By means of deep breathing, it is possible to

12
naturally restore the link to one's exterior (surroundings).

For example, a good baseball pitcher may suddenly falter and begin to throw a string of
bad balls. At those times, a great coach will walk calmly and casually to the mound, and
have a quiet chat with him. By introduction of this "Ma ai", (gap or brief natural pause in
time), the breathing is brought under conscious regulation.

In drama and martial arts, the "Ma ai" (interval of time or space) is very important. For
example, in dance when the dancer comes before the spectators, it is one person facing
many. In this situation, the "Ma ai" is, first, the distance in space between performer and
the audience. In addition, there is a "Ma ai" in time between the performer and him- or
herself. And finally, establishing a high level of physical performance depends on
understanding the "Ma ai" in the breath. Essentially, if one can breathe deeply, and
thereby restore responsiveness to one's surroundings, one can regain one's true self.

When we encounter adversity, we shouldn't shut down our receptivity and responsiveness
to our surroundings. If we want the situation to change, and to become responsive to us,
we must first begin to change ourselves. If we can accomplish this, then the situation will
naturally begin to change. That is the meaning of the saying "Heaven helps those who
help themselves". However, attempting to change oneself by thought, worry, or mental
effort is bound to fail. The necessary changes can only come about in accordance with the
level of development of the body and breath.

With all this in mind, the NBM does not promulgate such superstitious concepts as the
frequently heard idea that, after you commence NBM practice and your fortunes
naturally take a turn for the better, suddenly "The gods have begun to smile down on
you!". Instead, you will come to understand that if the body changes, circumstances will
naturally change in response. To those who can heed our straight-forward message, the
connection to breath is explained in the same direct way.

The Nishino Breathing Method is the way to acquire a slim and resilient body, to call
forth your greatest potential abilities, and to make your luck blossom fully.

Tong Ren Definition
Tong Ren is an energy healing therapy developed by Tom Tam as an integral part of the Tom
Tam Healing System.
It is based on the premise that illness is related to interruptions, or blockages, in the body’s
natural flow of: blood, neural bioelectricity, blood, hormones and chi (life force energy).
Most blockages can be manually identified along the spine where they inhibit the activity of
the central nervous system.
Tong Ren utilizes a universal energy source—the “collective unconscious,” in Jungian terms
—to remove a patient’s blockages and restore the body’s natural ability to heal, even when
illnesses are chronic, debilitating, or otherwise untreatable.
h
Because no physical contact is involved or necessary, Tong Ren is often practiced as distance
healing. In a typical session, the Tong Ren practitioner uses a lightweight, magnetic hammer
to tap specific points on a small anatomical model of the human body, which serves as an
energetic representation of the patient.
The practitioner directs chi to blockage points corresponding to the patient’s condition,
which breaks down resistance in those areas. As blood flow, neural transmission, and
hormone reception are restored, the body is then able to heal.
Tong Ren integrates elements of Medical Science and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
to create a powerful new healing modality.
History of Tong Ren
Tong in Chinese means bronze; Ren means man or human. Tong Ren can be translated as
‘bronze man’. In the Sung Dynasty (1023 AD), Emperor Ren Zhong Sung summoned the
highest medical faculty of the Empire to write up the “New Bronze Man’s Points of
Acupuncture Diagram and Note”. Dr. Wang Wei-yi was responsible for designing the
acupuncture bronze man (human figure made by bronze). In 1027 AD, two identical bronze
men were made, which were named Tong Ren (meaning “bronze man” in Chinese). Tong
Ren Healing is an important component of the Tom Tam healing system. To commemorate
the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) pioneers for their invaluable contribution to the
world on the medical front, “Tong Ren Healing”, an energy healing system developed by Tam
was named after the acupuncture figure created by the TCM forerunners.
Tong Ren Technique
Tong Ren healing is becoming increasingly popular and widespread. Worldwide, and on a
daily basis, people with serious illnesses are treated by Tong Ren therapists. Countless
patients benefit from and are healed by Tong Ren Therapy. Each Tong Ren therapist has
his/her own way of healing people. The effectiveness of the healing is high, and the cost is

14
low. Tong Ren Therapy is extremely easy to learn. Basically there are four major techniques
(1) Magnetic Hammer
(2) Laser Beam
(3) Pins
(4) Discing Technique
Magnetic Hammer
The magnetic hammer technique is the primary method used in Tong Ren Guinea Pig
Classes for group healing. We use the hammer to tap points on the doll for about 10- 15
minutes. Patients typically describe feeling inner warmth, tingling, movement, or sensation;
this tends to be the case regardless of which technique is used. Patients can tap the doll for
self-healing, but they will gain more benefit if someone else taps for them; this allows the
patient to relax more fully in order to receive the healing energy.
With the hammer technique, the first step is to locate the points on the doll. The beginner
can follow the healing chart in our text book “A Lazy Bum’s Healing”, then write down the
main points and support points on paper, or mark the points on the doll. On the healing
chart, the main points indicate where the energy is blocked and where the root of the
problem is. The support points enhance the effectiveness of the healing and are not
mandatory, whereas the main points are.

When we press on a patient’s body following the main points from the chart, the patient will
usually experience an uncomfortable or painful feeling at these points. In TCM theory these
are called the Ouch Points. We need to pay attention to any Ouch Point, or any area where
pain is felt. Pain is a signal from the body, which indicates that there is an imbalance or
where the Chi is static. For example, when one has liver cancer, we shall find an Ouch Point
at T9 on the right hand side. When a patient has breast cancer, we can easily find an Ouch
Point at T4, on the same side as the tumor. Based on many years of practice and experience,
I have observed that when a person is diagnosed with a specific condition or disease, they
will have an Ouch Point, which corresponds to a certain designated root problem. However,
please be careful not to mislead a patient by  making a diagnosis according to an Ouch Point.
A blockage can sometimes mean just a tight muscle – nothing more, nothing less. Making a
diagnosis is the job of medical doctors using specific medical equipment and/or tests. In our
healing, we only follow the doctor’s diagnosis to find the blockage or reflex points. We never
make any diagnosis of a patient’s condition.

When we use the hammer technique on the doll for healing, the general order of stimulation
is from the top to the bottom, like the natural flow of water. However, when we stimulate the
Sky Window area where both the common carotid and vertebral arteries are found, the order

15
of hitting should be from the bottom to the top. This is different from when we are working
on the nervous system, because the arteries carry blood upward from the heart to the brain.
When we are done with all the points with the hammer technique, we should hit the doll
from the top of the head to the bottom of the feet. This allows for the clearing of the Chi in
the whole body before we finish the healing session.

While treating cancer, we should begin by using the hammer on the head of the doll at GV22
and BL6 on both sides. After a couple of minutes, proceed to CR8’s which are not on the doll.
The two CR8 points are where the ears are. Do this for another couple of minutes, then move
on to the points related to the specific cancer(s). When treating multiple cancers, we always
start with the primary cancer, even though there may not be any symptoms.

Tong Ren Therapy is based on the power of our mind creating energy for healing. The source
of this energy is from the collective unconscious, which is connected to the super conscious.
When we practice Tong Ren, the focusing of our mind comes from our subconscious and
unconscious – which means, “Just do it”. If we make a conscious effort to focus, the focusing
comes from our conscious mind, not from the unconscious mind. No one can consciously
access one’s unconscious mind. The unconscious mind is instinctive and cannot be
controlled. Functions of the unconscious mind are automatic reactions. This use of the mind
with the hammer technique facilitates the breaking down of blockages, which can then let
energy pass within the body freely. With Tong Ren healing, we do not need to think or focus
on the breaking down of the blockages, because the thought has already been stored as
memory in our subconscious mind.

Using the hammer technique, we hit points on the doll for about 10 to 15 minutes. As a rule
this is enough. Patients can hit the doll for self-healing, but the best way is to ask someone
else to do it because in this way the patient can be totally relaxed in order to receive the
healing energy. A child’s mind is purer than an adult’s and without resistance. That is why
children are more effective when using the hammer technique than most adults. With late
stage cancer, daily use of Tong Ren healing is required. With cancer at an early stage, we can
use Tong Ren two or three times a week. If the patient wants to do it or have it done on
him/her more often, it is all right to do so because there are no side effects with Tong Ren
healing. The more you do it, the more you benefit from it.

When we see points on the spine from the Lazy Bum book, e.g. C1, T1, L1, S1, we hit the doll
on both side of the points. If C1 Right is specified, for example, then we hit only the right side
of C1.

16
Laser Beam
Another technique for Tong Ren healing is the use of laser beam on the doll. The laser beam
technique represents heat, the building up of Chi to apply radiation onto a tumor, similar to
the use of radiation in the hospital. Our concept is that of making the tumor shrink or
disappear with heat. When using the laser beam, we point the light to where the tumor is on
the doll. The laser beam technique is also helpful for charging one’s energy for treating the
side effects from radiation and chemotherapy. The method is simple – just put the laser
beam onto CV4 or CV6, or in between, where the lower Dantian is located. Basically, the
laser beam is used on one spot at a time. However, if the patient or the therapist prefers,
more than one laser beam can be pointed at the doll at the same time.
The healing session with the laser beam can be 10 to 20 minutes. Some patients like to have
the light on longer. This does not have any side effects. Some cancer patients put the laser on
the whole night long, which is fine as long as one does not mind wasting batteries. The use of
the laser beam for healing cancer is simple and easy. Just turn the light on and point it onto
the tumor area. One can do self-healing and a Tong Ren therapist does not need to be
involved. When the light is on, it is best for the patient to be fully relaxed, making the healing
more effective. During a healing session, we suggest that the patient does not read anything
or watch TV. When using the laser beam on the doll, a patient may feel heat on the face. At
the same time, the heat may go towards the area where the tumor is located. This is called
Chi running in the body, which is important for healing. Someone may feel an expanding
sensation in the chest and feel deeper and or easier breathing. For patients with multiple
cancer or with advanced cancer, directing the laser onto the lower dantien of the doll for 10 –
15 minutes will charge the patient with Chi.

In Tong Ren healing, we can use the hammer and laser beam simultaneously. We can use
one doll with a laser beam on the tumor area, and another doll with the hammer technique
to break down the blockages and to stimulate the support points. In this way, the healing
could be more effective in a shorter period of time. We can also use the hammer stimulation
first, and then use the laser beam afterward. Each session is about 20 minutes with the
combination of the two healing techniques.

Pins (older technique less commonly used)

Another method of Tong Ren healing involves putting pins onto the doll following the chart
in “A Lazy Bum’s Healing”. In the early days of Tong Ren healing, this was the only
technique we used. Later, because of the law in Massachusetts and political reasons, we
developed the hammer and laser beam techniques to replace the using of pins. At present,
the law in some states of the U.S.A. is unclear about the legality of placing pins (including

17
acupuncture needles) into the doll. In some states, one needs to have an acupuncture license
even to do Chi Gong healing onto the doll. To avoid political and legal problems, we shall
skip the pins and Chi Gong techniques on the doll. By the way, it is interesting to note that it
is extremely rare that a licensed acupuncturist would be interested in Tong Ren healing.
Most people who are interested in Tong Ren healing are mostly patients or family members
of the patients. The more difficult the cases, the more interest they have in our healing
system, because they benefit from it.
When we see points on the spine from the Lazy Bum book, e.g. C1, T1, L1, S1, we put the pins
on both side of the points, i.e. one pin on the left side and one pin on the right side of C1. If
C1 Right is specified, for example, we put the pin only on the right side of C1. When all the
pins are in, we leave them there for about 20 – 25 minutes, like in an acupuncture session.
The pins should be removed afterwards so they can be placed onto the doll again in the next
treatment. Pins being left on the doll longer than 25 minutes would not cause any side
effects, but would not enhance the quality of healing. The pins must be removed and re-
inserted into the doll for a fresh healing session.

We generally use pins on the back of the acupuncture model and laser on the front. The
hammer technique can be used on both front and back.

Discing (older technique less commonly used)

The latest Tong Ren healing technique is called “Discing” or “Disking”, which I started to
develop in August 2007. The Discing technique requires the participation of at least three
people. Three people form the collective conscious and collective unconscious. This method
is more powerful and focused than other Tong Ren techniques. However, Discing cannot
take the place of the other Tong Ren techniques, because each technique serves a certain
purpose. Tong Ren Discing works equally well on cancer and other diseases.
To do Discing, one requires a disc or a dish as a tool. You may use the lid of a sugar jar, a
teapot lid, a teacup lid, or a small saucer. Simply set the disc or lid above the Ouch Point on
the doll or directly onto the patient. Each practitioner places one or two fingers on the disc or
the lid. When we use the doll, we can use the bigger acupuncture model, as it is easier to
position a lid on it. If we put the lid directly onto the patient, the patient may sit down in a
comfortable position or lie down and relax. When we treat cancer or tumors, we ask the
patient where the tumor is located, then let the patient position the lid or disc on top of the
tumor.

Before the treatment, we usually ask the patient to do self-examination by pressing on the
tumor (Ouch Point) and remembering the size and level of pain. After the treatment, they

should press the same area to compare the before and after conditions. Doing Discing on the
Ouch Point takes about five minutes. Usually the patient feels sensations such as tingling,
heat, warmth, heaviness or body aches as when other Tong Ren healing techniques are being
applied. After we are done with treating the tumor or Ouch Point, we apply the same
technique on the spinal blockage points.

For example, when we treat breast cancer, we first treat the tumor or lump on the breast
area, and then treat T4, where the blockage causing the breast problem is located. After
treating T4, the next area we can work on is on the head at BL6 and GV22. In the Tom Tam
Healing System. BL6 and GV22 are the pituitary gland and hormone area. The mammary
gland is a hormonal organ, controlled by the pituitary gland. When we put the center of the
lid on GV22, it automatically covers BL6; we do not need to separate GV22 and BL6 when we
do Discing. Before doing Discing on a patient with a breast tumor, the patient should check
the size of the lump first if the lump can be found. After the treatment, the lump should be
checked again so we can compare the size.

Very often, the lump may be smaller or may even have disappeared after the treatment.
Discing would probably remind some of us of the use of the Ouija board. In fact, in terms of
technique they are very similar. However, they are completely different in theory. With
variations on the same principle, the Ouija board is used in different countries for fortune
telling. An almost identical method has been used in China for fortune telling for a thousand
years. In Chinese it is called De Xian. De means Disc; Xian means someone who is immortal
or a genius. Xian is also the highest level one can achieve in Taoism, as Buddha is the highest
level one can achieve in Buddhism. De Xian is one of the mystical arts of the Taoists. The
Ouija board and De Xian, each having their own particular theory as to how and why they
work, are still popular today in America and China.

The traditional explanation for the mysterious driving force of the Disc’s movement varies: it
could be from the psychic power of some spirit, soul, immortal being, angel, or even the
devil. The scientific explanation according to Tong Ren is that the movement is caused by the
power of the psyche: the unconscious or collective unconscious. In our Discing theory, the
healing power of Chi is from the collective conscious and collective unconscious working
hand in hand. People tend to forget that humans and all living organisms have the natural
and instinctive ability for self-healing and power to heal others. If any life form loses the
healing instinct, it will eventually be unable to survive, a process similar to natural selection.
When three or more people practice Tong Ren healing together using the Discing technique,
a collective consciousness is being formed. So far there are many people in the world who

19
have already experienced the positive results of Tong Ren healing and believe in this healing
modality. This belief constantly reinforces the Tong Ren collective unconscious, which keeps

expanding constantly. Its healing power is infinite. The more we practice, the more our
collective unconscious builds up. As the healing power grows, the success rate of curing
cancer and tumors becomes higher and the time required for healing becomes shorter. Such
results have not been found with the use of Chi Gong healing or any other energy healing
modality.

Discing is not related to any religion. Nor is it something shrouded in mystery. Our theory is
based on Tong Ren healing, which is based on the power of the collective unconscious. When
one practices Tong Ren Discing, we do not need to believe in the Tao, God, Buddha or any
religious system. There is no need to ask for help from any spirit or angel. We only have to
believe that we have natural instinctive healing energy, which everyone is born with. Our
instinct to heal is stored in our mind, whereas the healing power of the collective
unconsciousness exists in the universe. Psychic healers are not the privileged ones with the
special ability to heal – all living organisms are born with this instinctive healing power.
********
Tong Ren healing is only one part of the Tom Tam Healing System. The points which we use
to treat cancer can be employed while using other methods of stimulation. If a person does
not like using Tong Ren, they may apply the same theory and points to acupuncture, Tui Na,
Chi Gong healing, Shiatsu, massage, energy healing, etc. Yet, in my own experience, the most
powerful and effective technique for healing cancer is Tong Ren rather than using other ways
of stimulation onto the same set of points. Other healing modalities can be combined with
Tong Ren Therapy to treat cancer. Very often, using Tui Na or acupuncture combined with
Tong Ren makes opening of the blockages easier. Most acupuncturists have a hard time
believing that Tong Ren is more powerful than the use of acupuncture needles for treating
cancer. In fact, Tong Ren Therapy has successfully healed many cancer cases, whereas there
has not been any report about cancers having been cured by the exclusive use of
acupuncture.
There is no doubt that energy healing without mechanical stimulation can be used to treat
cancer. We frequently see reports about people having been cured this way in the media. In
China, many studies have reported that Chi Gong healing has cured some cancers. In the
West, we know that faith healing, energy healing or religious healing have cured some
cancers.
Tong Ren healing is a form of energy healing. Its power comes from the collective
unconscious, which is based on the belief of a group of people. Tong Ren’s credibility is built
on the experience of countless positive healing results. As a new patient hears more
successful healing reports from others, they become more confident and in turn this will lead
to better healing results.
It is a personal choice whether a cancer patient decides to choose chemotherapy, radiation,
herbs, minerals, energy healing or other alternative therapies. Tong Ren healing does not
interfere with other healing modalities. We never advise any cancer patient to stop another
healing modality in order to follow ours. A patient has the right to choose any modality or
combination of healing modalities.

The information below pertains to the Tong Ren Therapy system developed by Tom Tam, a
prominent Boston area acupuncturist and healer. The system is used within our "Guinea Pig"
Healing Classes which are now located in many parts of the world. Tong Ren Therapy has
proven helpful in a wide range of cases, including many conditions that are difficult to treat
such as Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson's Disease.

The Energy Healing aspects of Tong Ren Therapy are part of the larger Tom Tam Healing
System which utilizes acupuncture, qi gong and tuina for healing. The system is based on
Master Tam's years of clinical practice and research and utilizes both western and eastern
medical thought.

Tong Ren Therapy Information

What is Tong Ren Energy Healing?

Tong Ren energy healing was developed by Tom Tam as a therapy for internally healing a
patient's energy system by using the collective unconscious, as defined by Dr. Carl Jung, for
internally accessing that energy system.

Tom has found that Tong Ren energy healing is an effective method for healing people with
cancer and other serious illnesses. In the winter of 2001, Tom successfully healed a client
with lung cancer by using energy healing exclusively. After that, Tom set up a healing class
for cancer patients and, at the same time, took the opportunity to train his students in this
healing technique. By February 2002, the first healing class began. During the next three
years, more than 2200 people have attended the Guinea Pig healing classes. As of late, the
class has drawn people with diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson Disease,
Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lyme Disease, RSD, and HIV/AIDS - to name a few. People regularly
come from other states and other countries to attend the healing class.

Why do we call it the "Guinea Pig" Healing Class?

Chinese custom believes that when you have found a lucky name you never change it. In the
beginning, when practicing Tong Ren healing, new methods were tried for healing the most
difficult cases. Patients were told that they would be part of a "Guinea Pig" class. After the
patients in the class received the "Chi" energy healing, many success stories began to surface
and we saw dramatic results week by week. The name "Guinea Pig" class became a lucky
symbol to Tom, his students and the patients. So it remains "Guinea Pig class" to this day!

What are Guinea Pig Healing Classes?

Guinea Pig classes are group-healing sessions using Tong Ren therapy. The classes typically
serve sixty or more patients each session and take an average of one minute per patient. The
patients are seated facing the group leader and often a group of assistants. The group leader
has an interactive dialog with each patient to determine the patient's diagnosis and
condition. They then determines the treatment points to be addressed for the patient and

22
they direct their activity to accessing the collective unconscious and applying energy to the
treatment points. Patient contact and even close proximity to the patient are not required.
During each patient's therapy, we will typically ask the patient for his or her current
condition and any sensations he or she may feel. We determine the length of time that
treatment is required for each patient and then move on to the next patient.

The Guinea Pig classes utilize Tom Tam's Healing System and associated techniques. The
basis of energy healing is that energy removes blockages in the body that cause illness.
Removal of these blockages restores the natural flow of 'Chi' energy so that the body
naturally corrects itself and therefore functions properly and heals.

In the "Guinea Pig" class, Tong Ren energy healing does not come from the practitioners
alone. Master Tam believes that "Chi is energy, which is created in the universe and can be
used to create healing." This universal Chi is accessed through the collective unconscious,
and our experience shows that the practitioner's belief in the effectiveness of Tong Ren
healing is a key element enabling access by the practitioner to the collective unconscious.

Based on the people who have attended class during the last three years, more then 90
percent of these people are alive and remain hopeful. Many of the patients that were
considered seriously ill and hopeless have returned to living a normal life, and many patients
have been able to resume their employment.

What is Chi?

Chi is a very well understood concept that has been empirically documented in China for
approximately 5,000 years. In Western culture, Chi is probably best understood by
university researchers working on non-local effects in sub-atomic physics. These studies
validate the concept that Chi is the fundamental magneto-electric field in the universe. In
our bodies, Chi is equivalent to bioelectricity, which is essential for maintaining healthy
nerve impulses that are required for nourishing cells so they can self-repair. In the Guinea
Pig class, we focus this energy via the collective unconscious to release blockages that cause
illness. Simply said, when Chi flows freely then the body heals.

Many cultures have their own energy healing methods and theories. In China, the most
popular energy healing method is called Chi Gong healing. The Chi Gong master uses his Chi
to heal others. To become a Chi Gong healing master usually requires many years of study
and practice.

How does Tong Ren Healing use Chi?

As mentioned, universal Chi is accessed through the collective unconscious. In the Guinea
Pig class, the energy used is not from Chi Gong practice. It is based on belief being a power
unto itself. As a collective belief it creates the collective unconsciousness that is the source of
healing energy.

It is believed that as our awareness of and research on the positive results of Chi energy
healing grows, not only from the healing class but also through the results seen in
participants from previous classes, Chi energy will build and become more powerful and
effective. Based on his clinical experience and practice over the past twenty years, Tom
believes that the increasing number of people healed using Chi energy methods, will further
ingrain Chi healing in our collective unconscious and thereby further improve treatment
results. Thus, confidence grows-through observing the positive results seen in hundreds of
people as they heal from serious illnesses by practicing the Tom Tam Healing System.

23
Tom is studying how the growth of the collective unconscious impacts the confidence of the
healing practice and how the results intensify the power (the bioelectricity) of the Chi to
release blockages more effectively.

Can the Guinea Pig Class really cure my problem?

Results of any healing modality are never guaranteed. However, we often see symptomatic
improvement with patients during the healing class. They report feeling better and being less
symptomatic. They feel a "release" and say they feel that they are "getting better."

Over time, the vast majority of patients have reported significant improvements.

There are patients who have been diagnosed with cancer, yet they do not feel any discomfort
and generally enjoy their life. Many people report that after they attend the Guinea Pig class
the cancer is gone according to medical tests. However, the doctor will often want the patient
to continue chemotherapy or radiation.

How can I know that the Class is healing my illness?

A patient's medical tests determine the standard for diagnosis and for healing. Most of the
people who join the class have a serious medical problem. They have seen several doctors or
healers, yet their problems are still the same or worse. During the class, many people can feel
their pain or symptoms abate, but this does not mean their problem has healed.

Over time, patients often report that their improvements have been proven by medical tests.
Some results have been so dramatic that patients report that their doctors credit it to a
miracle or blame faulty medical tests and even misdiagnosis.

Should I tell my doctor that I joined the Guinea Pig Class?

Nothing about how a patient is healing should be hidden from a doctor or any healer. It is
important that the doctor knows what a patient has been doing to heal. Most of the patients
share their experience in the healing class with their doctor. It doesn't matter if the doctor
believes or not; the doctor should know the truth.

With cancer, it is very important to tell the doctor that energy healing was used to heal. Some
doctors believe in energy healing for cancer, but most do not. However, as more and more
physicians see the results of the energy healing, their opinions will change and more patients
will be helped.

Should I keep taking my medication after I join the Class?

It is the responsibility of the patient and his/her physician to determine the necessity for
medication and whether or not to continue taking medication. The physician is the expert
and, along with input from the patient, this decision should be made between doctor and
patient - this is not for anyone else to decide. In some cases, attention must be paid to the
type of medicine a patient is taking. For instance, after a healing class a diabetic patient's
blood sugar may drop significantly, even to normal levels. Therefore, the patient must check
the levels before using insulin, and diabetic patients are always advised to do so in Tong Ren
therapy.

This is also the case for patients with emphysema. It is advised that they check their oxygen
levels because Tong Ren therapy can cause an observable change in oxygen levels. The
patient is encouraged to continue to carry an oxygen tank in case of an emergency. They

24
should also advise their own doctor of the changes. This also applies to the asthma patient.
Even though their breathing improves or goes back to normal, they should carry their inhaler
unless advised differently by their doctor.

What will I do in the Class?

Patients are only asked to do nothing in the class - just sit, relax and quietly receive the
healing energy. There is no special diet, exercise or religious beliefs required to practice Tong
Ren.

During the class, participants are completely free to do what they want as long as they are
not interfering with others. This is not a support group, however many people like to share
their stories. Many people arrive early to class and talk to others or stay longer to share their
experiences.

Some people attend the class to support a friend or family member. They sit in the room,
watch and listen. During the class, everyone has the right to receive or refuse the energy
treatment. Several family members have taken Tong Ren training so they can continue
treatment of their loved ones at home.

What should I feel during the healing section of the Class?

Most of the patients report that they feel warmth or heat, first in their face. This warmth or
heat is, according to Chinese belief, the Chi moving through the body. The Chi typically
moves down from the head to the arm to the palm of the hand. Some may feel tingling in the
hands or in their feet. Some people report feeling their body becoming lighter and some may
feel their body becoming heavy and cannot move. All of these feelings are the Chi movement.
Some times people cry in an emotional release. After they cry, most of these people can feel
how much has been released.

In the class, some of the breast cancer patients have felt their tumor shrink, soften or
disappear.

Is Tong Ren Healing safe?

When practicing Tong Ren, there is no physical contact between the healer and the patient.
It is not transformed into any form of chemical, so it won't cause any chemical side effects or
chemically interfere with the medicine patients are taking. Tong Ren is a form of energy
healing. Patients may say that they feel tired. In fact, this fatigue is result of relaxation. When
the body is in the healing state, brain waves may slow down to let the body focus on energy to
heal the disease.

In China, Chi Gong healing is only dangerous to the healer not the patients. When the Chi
Gong healer or Master overuses his Chi, it may cause a side effect called "running fire." To
avoid running fire, the Chi Gong practitioner must be well trained. With Tong Ren healing, it
is believed that the energy or Chi comes from the collective unconscious. As more people
practice Tong Ren healing, the stronger the healing force becomes, so that practitioners will
not get running fire. Many students feel that the more they practice Tong Ren, the stronger
they feel. During the practice, all the people in the class will become part of the collective
unconscious state and therefore benefit from the healing energy.

If I don't have a serious problem, may I still join the Class?

25
Anyone can participate in the class. Chinese healing theory believes that the best healer heals
the disease before it presents itself. In the Guinea Pig class, the basic theory is to create the
healing power from the collective unconscious. When people sit in the class, they are already
part of the collective consciousness and the energy field of the collective unconsciousness.
During the class everyone benefits from the energy.

When the patient is healed, should they still come to the Class?

In some cases, when symptoms are gone, the illness may be gone. In other cases when tests
results are normal, it doesn't mean the disease is gone. For instance with cancer, when the
MRI shows nothing, it doesn't mean the patient is completely cancer-free. Even if the test
"looks" normal, it still takes a few more years to know for sure. To prevent cancer from
returning, it is advisable to continue with the class, even if the patient comes only once in a
while.

Very often it happens in the healing class that a cancer patient is healed according to doctor's
report and the patient never comes back to class until there is a reoccurrence. Patients have
also come back to learn Tong Ren and to participate in the healing class as a practitioner.

Do I have to believe in "Chi" or its power to heal?

No. Just being open to the experience is enough. The results are proof. Infants and pets have
been treated with excellent results. Patients do not have to believe in the practice. However,
when the patient doesn't believe in energy healing and rejects Tong Ren, it is not beneficial
because rejection is also energy.

In the Guinea Pig class, patients and Tong Ren practitioners are not required to practice Chi
Gong or Tai Chi. However if any one chooses to, there is no doubt that they will benefit.

How may Tong Ren benefit the late stage cancer patient?

In healing, we never give up on any illness. We treat all sickness, no matter what stage or
condition. Where there is life, there is hope. In fact in our Guinea Pig class, most cancer
patients are at stage 3 or 4. When cancer patients are in the early stages, it is difficult for
them to believe in our methods. Most early stage cancer patients pay full attention to
traditional Western healing. When medical doctors give up and tell their patient their case is
hopeless, a patient is more likely to seek another method of healing.

Of course, any illness discovered early is easier to heal. But no matter what the stage, a
patient after a Guinea Pig class will feel more relaxed and energetic. It means the life quality
has changed for the better. Even in the late stages of cancer, many people in our class feel
that pain eases or the body functions improve. During some of our classes, some patients
become symptom - free. If the patient is symptom-free, then the tumor is under control,
according to medical science and its healing standards. We have seen many difficult cases in
our Guinea Pig classes where the patients become symptom-free or tumor-free. It is a true
miracle in this modern time.

When some patients become symptom free and the tumor is under control or gone, they
continue to enjoy the class for a longer time of healing. Some return to their doctor for a new
chemo clinical trial and suffer the effects of chemo again. During our class, we never advise
or counsel people as to what they should choose for treatment, because it is a personal
question that an individual must answer. Each patient in our class has free will. We do not
want anyone to have the "white lab coat syndrome" in the Guinea Pig class.

26
What is the difference between Tong Ren and other forms of energy healing?

Every style and method of energy healing has its own theory to support its practice. Of
course, Tong Ren also has its own premise for understanding energy. The big difference
between Tong Ren healing and other modes of energy healing is the theory of the blockage.
According to Tong Ren philosophy, it is the blockage of energy that causes the problem. Each
physical or psychological problem is related to a blockage. There is no mystery and no
religion associated with Tong Ren, since more often than not, as a physical blockage builds it
can be detected and felt physically. Different physical and psychological illnesses have
different blockages. When we can find the blockage, the healing rate increases drastically,
and the healing range becomes much wider. Finding the blockage differs from other energy
healing, in both Western and Eastern systems. Tong Ren finds neurological, vascular,
hormonal, chemical and electrical roots to various problems instead of just treating the
problem where it occurs. Practitioners and patients alike learn these crucial details and they
are stored in the collective unconsciousness, creating an intricate and powerful way of
healing.

Is Tong Ren Therapy the same as Chi Gong healing?

Tong Ren Therapy is not the same as Chi Gong helaing. The basis for the theory of medical
Chi Gong practice is Traditional Chinese Medicine, including yin and yang theory, five
elements, meridians, acupuncture points, etc. The basis for Tong Ren healing theory is
modern anatomy, physiology, psychology and science. In China, there are so many different
styles of Chi Gong practice. Chi Gong healing has a very wide and unclear meaning. Also, any
healing using Chi is called Chi Gong healing in China. However, there are more than a
thousand different styles of Chi Gong forms in China. Chi Gong healers or Chi Gong masters
are required to practice their own Chi Gong form to build up the Chi before the healing.
According to Chi Gong theory, a Chi Gong healer's Chi is stored in the Dan Tien, which is
located in the abdomen. Chi Gong healers need to build up their Chi to fill up their Dan Tien
before the healing. If the healer's Dan Tien is not filled up, it may cause a dangerous side
effect to the practitioner, which in China is called "Running Fire." In Chi Gong healing, the
Chi stored in the Dan Tien is restricted, limiting the extent and duration of the healing and
the number of patients that can be treated. No matter how powerful the Chi Gong masters
are, the Chi is still from their own Dan Tien only. In Tong Ren healing, it does not matter
how weak or strong the practitioners are, because the energy is connected to the collective
unconscious, which is unlimited.

Tong Ren healers or therapists are never required to practice any form of Chi Gong or
internal exercise. Tong Ren healing believes that the source of Chi is not from the Dan Tien,
but rather from the strong power of belief that has been stored in the unconsciousness. The
strong power of belief is established from thousands of cases of amazing healings, not merely
brainwashing or blind following.

During the Chi Gong healing or Chi Gong practice, the Chi Gong healer's mind needs intense
focusing, which is from their consciousness. A Tong Ren therapist's mind is from the power
of belief, which is from the established collective unconsciousness; it never needs focusing
from the consciousness. The collective unconscious is the merger of many individual's
unconscious. The Chi of Tong Ren is from the collective unconsciousness, which is multi-
dimensional. As more people believe, it will build more powerful healing Chi. Tong Ren's
healing Chi is unlimited because the collective unconscious of Tong Ren is connected to the
super consciousness.

Does Tong Ren interfere with chemotherapy or radiation?

27
There is no need to be afraid that Tong Ren healing interferes with other therapies. In fact,
there is a report from Harvard Medical School that acupuncture lessens the negative side
effects of chemotherapy and radiation. Researchers at The University of Texas M. D.
Anderson Cancer Center and the Cancer Hospital, at Fudan University in Shanghai, China
have received a $263,000 grant from the National Cancer Institute to establish an
international center investigating the benefits of some Traditional Chinese Medicine
treatments for cancer patients. (News letter from M. D. Anderson Cancer Center 03/08/04).

In China, the most popular way to treat cancer is Chinese herbs and Chi Gong, but not
chemo and radiation. Many Chinese in America heal their cancer by using a combination of
Chinese and Western method. In America, some hospitals have begun Chi Gong classes for
cancer patients. Many cancer patients use different herbs, mineral diets, prayer or energy
healing for healing cancer. No one is afraid of the interference with these other methods.

It is confusing to consider the interference of chemo and radiation. Taking chemo or

radiation has a high risk in healing because this healing treatment kills both good and bad
cells. We never hear that energy healing kills good cells. In fact, we should be considering or
asking whether chemotherapy or radiation interferes with Tong Ren.

How often can I use the Tong Ren for healing?

Our Guinea Pig classes are in various locations. Each location has one or two classes per
week. For some patients, once a week is not enough to treat their serious problem. They may
need more. In our class, if you want more treatments with Tong Ren healing, you can talk to
the students or instructor in the class; we are willing to help all people who need our help.

Some cancers require more frequent treatments. Additional sessions can be arranged to stop
cancer cells from spreading. Tong Ren theory believes that cancer cells are formed from
blockages that cause a low voltage of bioelectricity. When the bioelectricity is corrected back
to normal, the cancer cell can be reversed into a normal cell. To heal cancer cells, a
correction in bioelectricity or energy must be made to make it faster than the spreading
cancer cells. If the intervals between treatments are too long, the cancer cells may spread
faster than the correction.

Tong Ren healing is a form of energy healing. The more you do, the greater the benefit. It is
similar to a battery that needs time to finish charging. In China when a patient uses Chi Gong
healing for treating a serious problem, they must practice Chi Gong every day. Tong Ren
healing is like Chi Gong practice. You can never do too much, only not enough. If you like to
use Tong Ren therapy, you can do it as frequently as two to three times a week, or even daily.

Besides cancer, what other diseases can Tong Ren help with?

The original idea for our Guinea Pig class is to heal cancer and help people who suffer from
chemotherapy and radiation. Yet, lately many people are considering our class as a hope for
healing any type of difficult disease. Of course, we cannot refuse any patient suffering from
an illness who wants to join our healing class. So far, the majority of patients who come to
our class have challenging health problems, such as Parkinson's disease, Lyme disease,
Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Pigmentosa, Emphysema, Diabetes, IBM, heart
palpitations, as well as many different types of cancer. These patients have tried many ways
of healing without success before they attend our healing class. It is very rare that people try
our healing class before they try other ways to cure themselves. The healing range of Tong
Ren therapy is very wide. Tom Tam's book, A Lazy Bum's Healing references Tong Ren
therapy for 260 difficult conditions. Of course in practice, the healing range if much wider
and not limited to these conditions. According to Tom Tam's Healing System, understanding

28
the root cause of the disease is the key to healing, and the biggest difference between other
healing systems. When we find the root of the problem, then we can treat the condition
easily; if not, it becomes known as the so-called difficult disease or an untreatable illness.

Is Tong Ren healing medical science?

Science needs to be proven. Our healing theory is based on medical, scientific information,
yet so far no scientists or scientific institutions want to prove it, or even want to hear about
it. The study of science needs interesting subject matter along with hefty financial support.
This is not in our practitioner's area of practice. Tong Ren healing needs to be proven by
scientists and is still yet to be done.

According to modern medical studying, each organ has three functions: the mechanical
function, chemical function and electrical function. In terms of healing, people mostly pay
close attention to the mechanical and chemical functions in the body. They often do not pay
attention to the electrical functions in the body. Also, there are three ways for the bio
electrical signal to pass: the electric synapse, chemical synapse, and a mixed synapse; which
is the electrical and chemical synapse combination. To keep the organ functioning normally,
we shouldn't only pay attention to the chemical synapse, we must also pay attention to the
function of the electrical synapse.

It is easy to understand the mechanical function of an organ. There are many ways to correct
problems of a mechanical nature. Surgery, massage, and physical therapy are common.
These modalities are almost always second to the attention paid to the chemical function,
which reaps huge profits for many businesses and manufacturers. The chemical function
balance includes herbs, diet, chemical pill or liquid. In fact, the whole history in the west or
east, people put more attention on the chemical healing function. No attention is given to the
electrical function balance. The imbalance of bioelectricity is one of the major reasons or
cause of sickness. To heal the sickness, we should open the blockage which caused the
impulse or bioelectricity to be out of balance. So far, the most popular method for regulating
electrical function in the body for western medicine is through usage of the pacemaker.

The environment (temperature, gravity, air pressure, weather) can affect the brain's impulse.
According to Chinese healing theory, this aspect of health is regarded as the human's
harmony with nature. In the Tong Ren healing, we believe that Tong Ren therapy can create
the energy which can affect the brain impulse. Also, the energy may open the blockage which
caused the imbalance. When we balance the impulse from the brain or the bioelectricity in
the body, then the sickness can be healed.

Is Tong Ren healing a form of suggestion?

Tong Ren healing is absolutely not based on suggestion power for the patient, because we
have healed babies, autistic children and patients who are in unconscious conditions. Also
we hav etreated animals with very successful results. It is easy to call some healing as
suggestion power when people cannot explain the healing method. Suggestion power is
needed only as language is needed to connect with the patient. This language includes
talking, light, movement, smell, touch, temperature, or any technique of stimulation to the
patient's sensory organ. Also, suggestion power doesn't work for everyone, but Tong Ren
healing works for almost anyone who is willing to try it.

Tong Ren healing may be a suggestion power for the healer, but not the patient. When the
Tong Ren therapist works with the doll, it is a means for allowing a connection to take place
with their collective unconscious. As in Pavlov's condition, when the signal appears in the
memory, then the unconscious part of the brain is functioning. Hitting the doll with the

29
hammer, and putting the laser beam on the meridian point or putting the Chi on the doll, are
the ways for the Tong Ren therapists to connect with the healing collective unconscious.

Some patients don't want to try the Tong Ren healing because they believe it is a stupid
means of suggestion power. But many of them want to try the healing when they have lost
their hope in other healing techniques. If the treatment has a chance to heal the problem,
will you be willing to try it? Or will you laugh and refuse it? In fact, the hypnotist and
psychologist always use the suggestion power for their healing, but patients never care if that
is their technique, because, in fact they are only looking for a positive result.

Should one who doesn't believe come to your class?

We are not involved in brainwashing. The mind is free, and belief is an individual choice. We
respect each one's belief. The door of our class is open; we welcome anyone who is interested
in what we are doing, to come and share our knowledge. First time in our class, most of the
people don't believe it because they do not have any information about it. But after the first
class, most of the new people begin asking questions. In order to know about the healing
method and results, the best way is to interview the patients in the class, but not the students
or therapists. To gain some knowledge, it is nice and easy to come for observation or healing.

How can I get the most out of the Guinea Pig Class?

It is advised that patients attend class weekly or, and if that is not possible, at least once a
month even, if their disease has gone into remission or disappeared. Getting "recharged"
with Chi regularly keeps the "engine" of your body tuned-up. Other ways to keep up with the
Tong Ren healing are:

 Use the acupuncture model/doll daily, even if only for five minutes.
 Speak with a couple of others in the Guinea Pig class, supporting each other by
staying in touch between classes and doing Tong Ren healing on each other over the
phone
 Accompany each other on medical visits when the visit requires important decisions
or further medical intervention. It is important to be "patient-advocates" for each
other. It is helpful to question the risks of any medical treatment and to explain the
progress of our healing through the use of Tong Ren, the Tom Tam Healing System
and the Guinea Pig healing class. This is a crucial step for educating doctors about the
effectiveness of Tong Ren healing in thousands of cases, for prolonging lives and for
improving the quality of those lives.

How can I learn your healing system?

Anyone can learn Tong Ren healing with or without any prior knowledge. Most students
learned Tong Ren healing from being patients. If you are interested in learning Tong Ren
healing, any student or practitioner will be willing to share his or her knowledge of Tong Ren
healing with you. Sharing the knowledge is important for building the collective unconscious.

A good starting point outside of simply attending a class is to read my article "How To Learn
Tong Ren Therapy". You can find books and other Tong Ren related information and
supplies available for purchase from our Tong Ren Book Store.

Where can I find a guinea pig class?

Our live video class is aired most weeks - others are available via tongrenstation.com. To see
if there are physical Tong Ren Therapy classes in your area, see Tom's class locations list.

Basic Theory of Tong Ren Therapy by Tom Tam

By Chad Dupuis
Tagged in Energywork and Basics
The following article covers the basic theory behind Tong Ren Therapy.  It was written by the
founder of the system, Master Tom Tam.  There are other articles on this site, both technical
and general, regarding Tong Ren and the underlying Tom Tam Healing System.  This is a
good general introduction to the healing system.

For any healing system, there has to be a supporting theory, no matter where the theory
comes from or whether it makes sense. The theory of the collective unconscious is the basis
for Tong Ren Therapy. Without proof all theories are merely conjecture. Proof may be found
in research or empirical data. Tong Ren has not been proven by any expert research. This
type of research involves financial support, political support, development of modern
science, and case studies by a qualified practitioner. The proof for all of my theories is only
through the experience and results of my patients and myself. Of course I have no doubt that
Tong Ren Therapy works. No one can deny the work we have done or the results we have
achieved or argue about it.

With everything we have done, people like to know the theory behind the truth and its
philosophy. Yet, many things are still a puzzle. As with much of Western healing theories, no
one can be sure why they work. For example, how many billions of dollars have been spent
on cancer research and yet, has anyone found out why cancer occurs? We know so little from
this extensive quest, but we still use the "Big Three" treatments -- surgery, chemotherapy
and radiation -- to kill the cancer cells. Their effectiveness has been disappointing, but we
look ahead with hope. In my practice, it is easy to reduce the suffering in some cancer cases
with Chi Gong and Tong Ren Therapy. Yet, some tell me that if they do not understand the
theory of Chi Gong and Tong Ren healing, they would rather die, and they refuse to try my
healing modality. This is very surprising to me. I can tell them honestly that I do not know
the true theory of Chi Gong and Tong Ren healing, but I do know the method and I have the
ability to relieve the symptoms. In some cases, the tumor immediately disappears or
becomes smaller. Interestingly, most cancer patients are not knowledgeable about

31
chemotherapy, but they are willing to try it because they have faith in Western medicine. Ask
a doctor or someone who already received chemotherapy treatments one simple question:
who developed chemotherapy originally?

In religion we have faith healing. This theory is the belief in God. Many people laugh at and
deny faith healing. These people have closed minds; but if they do some research, there can
be no denial. Maybe the healing rate is low. Maybe their philosophy cannot be agreed upon
and accepted. However, the truth is that faith healing works; scorn cannot stop people from
using this approach. In fact, since the beginning of human history each nation and religion
has had its own methods for healing. Religious and mystical healing has its own way to bring
energy to heal patients. No matter what people name the energy, I believe it is the same. This
is similar to Chi Gong healing. There is a name and technique for each style of Chi Gong to
describe more or less the same thing.

Tong Ren healing is not affiliated with any religion, nor should it be viewed as a mystery. My
belief in Tong Ren healing is associated with the philosophy of the collective unconscious
and the power of the mind. Many people accept the idea that there is an unconscious and
that the mind is powerful. These philosophical views can be found in many books. When a
group comes together to form a collective unconscious, as in healing meditation, this
collective mind can become healing power. A leader is required for this type of healing
power. When we form a group with a collective unconscious mind, we need a, just as a
computer needs a font to show a letter on a monitor.

In Tong Ren Therapy we use a regular plastic acupuncture model to form the healing image.
The acupuncture model becomes an energetic representation of the patient's body. By
placing the needles in the appropriate spots on the model and connecting the mind with our
collective unconscious, the practitioner can give a patient a treatment. A connection between
the therapist and the patient is formed. This connection can be modified by the energetic
representation of the acupuncture model. Just as light shining through a slide will display an
image, the Chi directed to the patient is modified by the image of the acupuncture model
with needles inserted at specific points. The pattern of needles and the points selected are
the same as the acupuncturist would use if inserting the needles into the patient's body. Both
inserting needles in the model and in the patient's body are means to balance the patient's
Chi. The difference, of course, is that when the model is used the patient can be treated over
long distance. This is similar to some Japanese acupuncture methods in which the needle is
just touched to the skin but not inserted. Because Chi and the collective unconscious are not
limited by space; the only thing is to establish a connection. The healing power is not from
the acupuncture model--it is from our mind, and this mind transforms into a healing force.
This healing energy we call Chi. In the human body, Chi has its own way to circulate. We
must regulate the Chi and make it run on its track. This is the same theory that a Chi Gong
master uses to make Chi circulate in a patient's body.

There are more than a thousand different Chi Gong healing systems in China. For each
system, there are a certain way and certain techniques in the use of Chi for healing purposes.
In Tong Ren healing, we have our own techniques. The points used on the model are mostly
on the meridians of TCM. We choose the points for Tong Ren treatments from the Tom Tam
Healing System, which is based on TCM and results from my new research. When we
practice Tong Ren healing, we must follow a standardized method. In the future when more
people repeatedly use this same method, it will become more powerful. In this way our
collective unconscious intent and experience continuously increases the strength of Tong
Ren Therapy. In my practice, I can clearly affirm that the more I practice Tong Ren, the
easier it becomes to see positive healing results.

The purpose of this healing modality is to help balance one's Chi circulation. This balance is
good for anyone and does not cause any harm. If anyone ever tries to use this technique to

32
harm someone, it will not work. To harm someone is not a part of the philosophy of Tong
Ren Therapy. It is neither a part of our collective unconscious intent. If any of the
practitioners try to harm someone with Tong Ren, they will end up harming themselves. A
healer is one who tries to help someone heal. Hurting people is against the healer's
consciousness. When someone wants to learn Tong Ren healing, they must purify the mind
towards helping the sick and hopeless heal.

From the point of view of karmic theory, we could say that if patients believe in the efficacy
of Tong Ren, they are collectively creating a karmic field or mental (mind) imprint for this
approach to manifest healing. The more people who believe in and are open to Tong Ren, the
more powerful Tong Ren becomes. Furthermore, the more this modality is practiced, the
more potent it becomes. This is in accord with the Buddhist understanding of mental (mind)
imprinting because all ideas are collected in the subconscious and become more powerful
with the passage of time. Furthermore, Buddhist theory states that all things manifest in our
environment because of the imprints we have created in our subconscious mind. Therefore,
we could say Tong Ren healing is possible because we have planted seeds in our
subconscious and created a prior manifestation. Moreover, Buddhist and other Eastern
systems believe that all manifestations come from the mind, and within this understanding,
we can acknowledge that the body itself can be healed if we create the imprint for the healing
to happen in the subconscious mind. (In these systems,)according to this belief, the body is
the mind at a lower vibration frequency. The body is a creation or projection of the mind.

When we form a collective unconscious intent and force, and translate it towards a healing
power, this power has the highest quality. When we put people into the Chi Gong state, the
Chi automatically knows how to balance the Chi in the body. Our mind cannot change the
healing path of the Chi.

There is a famous research story in the Western world called The Hundredth Monkey.
Scientists studied the behavior of monkeys inhabiting a group of islands. One day a monkey
on one island was spotted going to the ocean to clean mud off a piece of food. This was the
first time the scientists had observed such behavior. Their excitement increased when
scientists from the next island reported that the monkeys on their island had begun to adopt
the same action. Although there was no contact between the two groups of monkeys, in a
short time, both groups had developed the same behavior, a transfer of knowledge without
direct contact. One could speculate that this was mere coincidence, yet it would seem more
likely that this was a tangible example of a collective unconscious at work. I believe that in
learning the best thing is, "Monkey see, monkey do." Now it seems even if they do not see,
they can do.

Perhaps as more people practice Tong Ren, eventually Tong Ren will be practiced in the
whole world. Hypnotic suggestion and guided meditation are practiced in the Western world.
Tong Ren Therapy is beyond the power of suggestion since we can produce healing effects on
babies and animals. This means that Tong Ren Therapy does not need the use of language to
influence the patient. It is a transfer of Chi, healing and knowledge without any guided
thought or the use of the power of suggestion. If a group of Tong Ren therapists perform
Tong Ren Therapy, they can gather more Chi to affect another group of Tong Ren therapists.
In this way the healing power of the whole group of Tong Ren therapists keeps growing.
Many Tong Ren practitioners realize that every few months the effectiveness of their healing
increases. This is because each day, as more people practice Tong Ren, the healing power
keeps growing within the collective unconscious. As more patients come to believe in the
healing power of Tong Ren, this further increases the healing power of the collective
unconscious.

To date, many people still do not believe that acupuncture, a physical and mechanical
stimulation technique, is effective in healing many diseases. The same acupuncture points as

33
in acupuncture are used in Tong Ren healing, but with Tong Ren, there is no need for actual
physical stimulation. Tong Ren is a modality using the power of the mind or psychophysical
healing, this causes many people to doubt and deny it, and have arguments about its theory
and challenge its healing results.

Recent medical studies have proven the power of the mind in the healing process. These
studies use a placebo in order to arrive at this conclusion. Sugar pills can trigger healing
without any chemical effects. Indeed, many of the reports show that sugar pills are often
more effective than chemical medicine or even surgery in certain research studies. If the
mind proves to be a power to heal diseases, the question is: what form of the mind promotes
the healing of illness? The mind is a form of brainwave. If we can discover the form of this
brainwave, we can access the healing state. The mind can react to the sensory organs, as light
or the reflection of an image reacts through eyesight, sound or noise through hearing, smell
from the nose, taste from the mouth, and touch, temperature from the skin. Besides
mechanical or physical stimulation, brainwave communication can also affect the state of the
mind.

In 1656, while working on the design of the pendulum clock, a Dutch scientist called
Christian Huygens found that if he placed two unsynchronized clocks side by side on a wall,
the two clocks would later slowly synchronize to each other. This same concept, known as the
Frequency Following Response (FFR), is a natural occurring phenomenon in the human
brain. The human brain has a tendency to change its dominant EEG frequency towards the
frequency of the dominant external stimuli applied to it.

Scientific studies have shown that one brainwave can affect others. This is called brainwave
entrainment or brain frequency entrainment. In nature, birds, fishes and all animals have
the capacity for brainwave entrainment. When a group of birds are flying, all the birds follow
the leader. When we look at a school of fish swimming, all the fish follow a leader too. The
point (pilot?) bird and pilot fish do not need to make any sound or physical signal for others
to follow. Their guiding signal is the brainwave. Brainwave entrainment triggers a frequency
following response. According to scientific studies, a mother's brainwave entrainment can
alter a baby's heartbeat and brainwave. When two women live together, it may change their
menstrual cycle, manifesting the effect on the hormone levels. In Tong Ren healing, we
believe that the mind of the therapist can change that of the patient's, plus the patient's
physical condition.

Basically the brainwave contains two important aspects; one is brainwave frequency, which
consists of four categories: Delta, Theta, Alpha and Beta. The other pertains to the type of
signal from each organ. In the case of a radio wave it includes the radio wave frequency and
the content of sound signal, as exhibited by speech or music. When we pick up the correct
frequency with the radio, we can connect with the radio station to receive its audio signals.

Brainwave entrainment operates with two different signals: one signal initiates from outside
of the human body and the other signal emanates internally. In Chi Gong healing, patients
can receive the Chi from the Chi Gong healer, and the patient also can guide his or her own
Chi circulation within the body. In Tong Ren healing, we follow the same theory; the Tong
Ren healer can send the brainwave to the patient for healing, and the patient can guide his or
her own brainwave for self-healing as well.

When the brainwave is active, its electromagnetic field is active. The electromagnetic field is
one type of energy in the universe. It is also a signal. Radio waves belong to the
electromagnetic field. The concept of brainwave entrainment has the same theory as the
television remote control, which uses electromagnetic energy. In the case of a television
remote control, we must set up the code for each function. When we push the right button,
the television functions correctly. Each human being or animal has the signal or code for

34
healing. Each organ of a being carries a different code and frequency. When we find the right
code, we can make the organ function normally. According to acupuncture research, when a
nerve around the acupuncture point has been anaesthetized (anaesthetisia), acupuncture
does not work because the signal cannot pass through to the brain. If we can send the healing
signal or code directly to the brain, it may help the healing progress.

Birds, fishes and all animals have the brainwave entrainment reaction. In the modern world,
almost every piece of electronic equipment comes with a wireless or remote control. The
brainwave entrainment of a being, or in the case of an electronic product, remote control or
wireless access, all come from an electrical magnetic function. Yet, in practice, many
scientists or experts still doubt whether a human being has brainwave entrainment ability
that can be used for healing. So far the popular brainwave entrainment technique is to use
music or light for healing.

In the study of psychology, there is something called the ideomotor effect in which the mind
can cause the subject to move. The ideomotor effect is an unconscious psychological
phenomenon. It is without conscious awareness, wherein a subject makes motions
unconsciously. If the mind can make a subject move or react, it means that the mind can also
move the energy or Chi in the body. Automatic writing, dowsing, facilitated communication,
and Ouija boards have also been attributed to the ideomotor effect. Some scientists use the
ideomotor effect theory to explain Chi Gong healing and Chi Gong itself. Tong Ren Healing is
not affiliated to any religious belief, or any mysticism or superstition. Tong Ren Healing has
never attributed this motion to paranormal or supernatural force. Ideomotor effect is an
ability a human is born with; it is instinctive.

In the practice of Tong Ren, when we put needles into the doll or bang the doll with a
hammer on the acupuncture points, the image of the points with regard to location will result
in memory stored in the subconscious area of the brain. By studying the healing function of
the acupuncture points, the healing function of the acupuncture points will be stored in the
healer's mind as memory. When practicing Tong Ren, the Tong Ren therapist's mind already
carries the signal of the location and the function of the points for healing. During a Tong
Ren session, the practitioner's brainwave which carries the healing signal will entrain the
patient's mind. In this brainwave entrainment, the same happens as in the case of a
television remote control functioning. If we send the right signal, the patient will make
progress in their healing. If we send the wrong signal from our brains, the patient will not
have any reaction. However, the wrong signal will not cause any dangerous or harmful side
effects.

Brainwave entrainment requires brainwaves to be in a synchronized condition. Our

collective unconscious with Tong Ren allows people to have an easy healing experience
because the collective unconscious puts the brainwaves into a synchronized condition. Our
healing collective unconsciousness is formed from the past experience of Tong Ren Healing,
which is formed from our belief, which is based on the healing results. Without good results,
the belief cannot be sustained.

The healing results of Tong Ren Therapy are stored in the brain as a subconscious
experience. This memory will last and become a lifetime experience. When more people
experience postitive healing results from Tong Ren Therapy, more people would believe in
Tong Ren Therapy. This forms a collective unconsciousness which becomes more and more
powerful. If Tong Ren's healing rate were low, its popularity in the collective unconscious
would fade out.

The Tong Ren healing experience does not work for some people. However, even when
people do not believe in Tong Ren but are willing to try it, it can work with good results.
Since Tong Ren works for animals, babies or patients in coma, this is inarguable proof that it

35
works. When people do not believe in Tong Ren and try to argue about it or deny it, the Tong
Ren treatment will not work for them because this resistance is a power in itself. People who
are into arguing or denying are trying to guide the brainwave of others to listen to them and
follow their theory. They cannot accept a new concept and try to prove that others are wrong.
This mind set of opposition is contrary to our belief in the collective unconscious. In this
situation, the Tong Ren practitioner should refuse to give a treatment or stop the treatment
because this is a waste of energy. It is easy to understand that if a fish or a bird does not
belong to the group, the brainwave entrainment does not work. In some cases, people believe
in Tong Ren Healing, but cannot feel anything from the Tong Ren treatment. This may be
caused by a functional problem in the patient's sensory cortex. This area may be inactive, or
sometimes it takes time to feel the energy moving. This kind of occurrence is very rare; most
of the people receiving Tong Ren Therapy feel tingling and/or a sensation of heat in their
hands, face or anywhere in the body.

We can also use the collective unconscious and brainwave entrainment theories to explain
faith healing, religious healing or energy healing. Yet, Tong Ren Healing is different from
other healing modalities. In Tong Ren Healing, we believes that there is a blockage for each
disease. To heal the illness, one must open, or unblock the blockage, which is the root of the
problem. When we find out the root of the problem, we may know how to treat the problem.
Each energy healing system has its own way to explain how energy is formed. In Tong Ren
healing, we believe that energy is from the unconscious, which is connected to the collective
unconscious. When Tong Ren practitioners heal others, they also heal themselves because
the practitioner and the patient are both within the same collective unconscious. The more
therapists practice Tong Ren, the more energy they gather.

Tong Ren dolls do not have any energy or power. The healing power comes from the mind.
The Tong Ren doll is simply a trigger for the healer's mind. In time, when the healer's level
progresses to a point that it becomes second nature, the Tong Ren healer will not need any
tools - just the mind. But this level is not for the beginner.
