Social Work

many different fields

social change and development, social cohesion, and the
empowerment and liberation of people
- Principle of social justice, human rights, collective responsibility and
respect for diversities are central to social work. Under pinned by
theories of social work, social sciences, humanities and indigenous
knowledge, social work engages people and structures to address
life challenges and enhance well- being
Social Worker - intervene in countless problematic situations people find
themselves in today, poverty-stricken heads of families who can hardly
provide for their families
As a social worker, you can specialize in specific areas such as public
health, child welfare, substance abuse and mental health
Social Workers better the lives of children and adults by helping
them find assistance and care if their current living situation isn’t
adequate for them to flourish
Children who are faced with life-threatening situations are a high
priority for social workers.
Social Work as a profession and vocation and a vocation, is
fulfilling and is fueled by vision, mission and emotion.
You will see the social work as a viable career choice. You will the
practice functions, practice settings and practice areas in social work.
Social work is not a stand-alone discipline, and that the skills and
competencies acquired by social work trainees and students are also
relevant even to their disciplines that engage in addressing clients of
social issues or problems.

GOALS OF SOCIAL WORK


CARING
- Refers to the heart of social work and it focuses on the well-being or
the welfare and comfort of the individual and community.
- The goal of CARING involves the enhancement of the quality of life
in prisons, the upgrading and humanizing services in nursing homes
etc.
CURING
- Refers to the aspects of treating people with problems in social
functioning.
CHANGING
- Refers to the active participation of the social workers in social
reforms
- These goals come from a perspective that there is a persistence of
poverty, environmental destruction and social disintegration.
- One of the most significant goals of social work because it
contributes in the struggle to pursue a lasting social change
Social work scholar Alfred Kahn (as cited in Zastrow, 1996) enumerated

COMMUNICATION
- Is a process
- Occurs between 2 or more people
- Expressed through written or spoken words, action, and non-verbal

- Involves different factors before it occurs, important to achieve the
main purpose (to convey message)
Communication occurs in a different form, it may occur verbally, which
involves the use of words such as the aforementioned examples.
Communication occurs in nonverbal when words are absent but instead,
hand gestures, symbols, or facial expressions are used.
