Experiment No: 05

Determination of Exact Section of Venturi Tube

Objective:
1. To measure discharge and exact section of venturi tube
2. To understand its characteristics
3. To measure fluid velocity

Apparatus:
1. Hydraulic Bench
2. Venturi tube
3. Stopwatch

Introduction Theory:

1
This is the experiment about characteristics of venturi tube. Venturi Tube is a simple
apparatus known as tubular. It has an entry of cone 30 degrees and exit of cone 5 degree.
It is used to measure fluid flow and pressure in a pipe of fluid. Its common example is an
automobile carburetor where air flows through a Venturi channel.

Procedure:
1. Set the apparatus as shown in the above fig.
2. Check all the apparatuses if working properly.
3. Open the fluid flow valve.
4. Open the discharge valve of hydraulic bench.
5. Let all tubes completely filled.
6. All the tubes will show same fluid level. Record that fluid level. It is also called head
level.
7. Now set different fluid levels for different tubes.
8. Let discharge valve open again.
9. Record Piezometer height.
10. Record the discharge flow.
11. Set a stopwatch and record flow rate.

Calculations:
We know that Bernoulli’s equation for venturi tube is;

p V2
+ + Z=c
γ 2g

Where,

2
P/𝜸 = Piezo metric Height
V^2/ 2g =kinetic Height
Z= Datum line
When
Z 1=Z 2
P/𝜸 = h
Due to strike of fluid at corners V2= 0 and v1 = v.
So we have,

V2
hTP + =h 2
2g

v = ¿¿

Conclusion:
We have done our experiment successfully. We have noticed an abrupt
change in speed of fluid flow due to change in the area.
