Grade 10 Binary Operations

The lesson introduces students to binary operations in algebra through examples of evaluating expressions using operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Students are asked to evaluate algebraic expressions involving binary operations like 5 * 2 where * means a2 - b and also complete an activity with additional evaluation problems. The lesson directs students to read their textbook pages on binary operations and provides video resources for further explanation.

Lesson Plan

Date: January 2021

Subject: Mathematics Grade: 10

Topic: Algebra --- Binary Operations

Required Material: Textbook (Caribbean Mathematics Bk2, 3rd edition by C E Layne et. al)

Specific Objectives: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

1. Evaluate algebraic expression using specific binary operations

Pre-requisite Skills: Simple substitutions in algebraic expressions:

Evaluate 2x + 3y, where x = –4 and y = 2.

Content:
In a binary operation, two quantities are combined by some method to give a ‘result.’
In 5 + 4 = 9, where 5 and 4 are added together and the binary operation is addition. The four
basic arithmetic binary operations are addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Example 1: Given that x □ y = 3x + y, find the value of 2 □ 5.

Hence x = 2 and y = 5
∴ 3(2) + 5 =
6 + 5=11

3𝑟−𝑠
Example 2: If r ☺ s = , evaluate 5 ☺ 9
3𝑟+𝑠
Hence r = 5 and s = 9,
3×5 – 9
∴ =
3×5 +9
6
=
24
1
=
4

Example 3: Given that 𝑎 ∗ b = ¼ √𝑎2 − 𝑏², determine 10 ∗ 6

Hence a = 5 and b = 3
∴ ¼ √102 − 6² =
¼ √100 − 36 =
¼ √64 =
¼×8=2
Example 4:
Given that 𝑝 ∆ 𝑞 = 3𝑝 − 2𝑞, evaluate 4 ∆ (−2 ∆ 5)

Hint: complete what is in the bracket first

Hence p = −2 and q = 5

(−2 ∆ 5) = 3(−2) − 2(5)

= −6 − 10
= −16

Replace (−2 ∆ 5) with −16

∴ 4 ∆ (−2 ∆ 5) 𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑠 4 ∆ − 16

Hence p = 4 and q = −16

4 ∆ − 16 = 3(4) − 2(−16)
= 12 − (−32)
= 12 + 32
= 44

Activity 1:
Evaluate:
1. If 𝑎 ∗ 𝑏 = 𝑎2 − 𝑏, 𝑒𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑎𝑡𝑒 5 ∗ 2
2. The binary operation ∗ is defined by, 𝑎 ∗ 𝑏 = (𝑎 + 𝑏)2 − 2𝑎𝑏
Calculate the value of 3 ∗ 4
3. Given that 𝑐 ∗ 𝑑 denotes 𝑐 − 3𝑑, evaluate
2 ∗ (1 ∗ 3)
