GradStart program
The program has been designed to provide a valuable and varied experience in the first 12
months in the role of a registered nurse. The first year registered nurse will acquire
experience and knowledge within a supportive environment, enabling them to become a
professional, competent and effective paediatric health care practitioner.
The goal of the GradStart program is to teach participants to apply theoretical knowledge to
clinical practice in a supportive environment, whilst transitioning to the registered nurse
role in a specialist paediatric hospital. The program will enable participants to provide
person-centred care to children and their families by developing a philosophy and personal
model of children and adolescent nursing.
The first year registered nurse will be encouraged to develop advanced critical thinking and
problem-solving skills throughout their program and into their professional careers. They
will also learn invaluable skills for communicating with children and families.
Program structure
During the program, the first year registered nurse has the opportunity to consolidate
practice in the clinical setting. Clinical settings include:
· Perioperative service stream (anaesthetics, recovery, scrub/scout and day stay) (CHW)
· Recovery (SCH)
· Adolescent surgery/medical
· Oncology/haematology
· Burns/plastic surgery
· Neuroscience
· Cardiothoracic
· Surgical
· Orthopaedic
· Medical
· Isolation/infectious diseases
12 | P a g e
· Day stay/medical and surgical
· Renal/liver/kidney/transplants (CHW)
· Neonatal intensive care (CHW)
· Gastroenterology/ endocrinology/rheumatology
· Emergency department
· Paediatric intensive care unit
Participants are given an opportunity to indicate their ward preferences during the 12 month
program.
The first year registered nurse is provided with a number of educational study days
throughout the year which are designed to complement the clinical placement.
The GradStart program encourages participants to attend clinical support sessions to foster
reflective practice. A strong element of the program is to encourage the program participant
to use reflection as a means of gaining a greater awareness of their performance and their
personal and professional self to ensure they are providing quality, person-centred nursing
care.
Each clinical area offers organisational and specialty education sessions. All program
participants are encouraged to participate in these learning opportunities.
Learning experiences
The GradStart program will challenge participants to think critically about current
knowledge, practice and the implementation of evidence-based practice in the clinical
setting. The participants will be encouraged to be ongoing and self-directed in their learning
and supported in identifying their own learning objectives and goals.
All program participants are required to complete compulsory assessable components,
including work-based learning assessments and theoretical work.
13 | P a g e
Support
A comprehensive orientation program will facilitate the integration of nurses into the
Hospital and ward environment within The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network.
Each nurse will be assigned a preceptor. This process enhances orientation and adjustment
to the clinical area and assists in the development of clinical skills and knowledge.
Support will also be provided by the program educators as well as multidisciplinary staff on
the ward, including nurse unit managers, nurse educators, clinical nurse educators, clinical
nurse specialists and nursing staff.
Application process
All positions for the 2021 GradStart program at The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network
must be made via the NSW Ministry of Health: Nurses and Midwifery Office (NaMO).
The NSW Nursing and Midwifery Office has released 5 online modules to support students

PRIVATE EMPLOYERS
Sheila Collins
Clinical Support Services Manager (ADON)
· We offer both a general and a perioperative stream, 0.9FTE for 2 years.
· The first year consists of 2 x 6 month rotations in the general areas. In theatres,
there are a few extra shorter rotations (Endoscopy, CSSD) but the main areas will be
Scrub/scout or Anaes/Recovery.
· We offer generous supernumerary time at the start of the program (This year it was
4 weeks), 4 study days per year and monthly graduate meetings.
· This year we have commenced a Clinical Accreditation Program with UTS in the
perioperative area and are looking to expand this to ICU. This means that by the time
Perioperative New Graduate placement with Chris O’Brien Lifehouse concludes 1 of
4 subjects required for postgraduate study at UTS will be completed.
· The Lifehouse CAP is set over a generous 5 month timeframe to allow for
participant engagement and facilitate advanced level clinical and academic outcomes.
A dedicated CAP coordinator is also available for course support and 1-to-1
mentorship, facilitation and assessment support. The course includes a paid study day
to thoroughly discuss course outline, assessment criteria, academic writing styles,
referencing styles and career progression opportunities.

Office Hours: Mon-Thurs, 07.30 – 17.30
We will offer PPT in the wards rotation only. The expectation is that the graduate
must do at least 3x 8 hour shifts per week when commencing as PPT
· The application process requests a 1 page cover lette . A cover letter of 1x small
paragraph or extending beyond the 1 page limit will inevitably see the applicant not
progress to interview.
· Evidence that the applicant knows about the hospital is important – they should
research if they have not been here as a student. We are a busy surgical hospital and
perform approximately 22-24,000 cases a year. If the applicant tells us that they are
interested in mental health or medical nursing they are unlikely to progress to
interview as we do not offer these services
· The student needs to be aware that when applying to a Healthscope hospital they
must apply to each hospital independently and they may advertise at different times.
Be careful when submitting the same application letter to multiple hospitals. We will
not accept an application that is addressed to the graduate coordinator of a different
Healthscope hospital or includes the name of an alternative hospital within the cover
letter or objectives section of a CV. So message is: be careful and pay attention to
detail.
