GradStart program

The program has been designed to provide a valuable and varied experience in the first 12
months in the role of a registered nurse. The first year registered nurse will acquire
experience and knowledge within a supportive environment, enabling them to become a
professional, competent and effective paediatric health care practitioner.

The goal of the GradStart program is to teach participants to apply theoretical knowledge to
clinical practice in a supportive environment, whilst transitioning to the registered nurse
role in a specialist paediatric hospital. The program will enable participants to provide
person-centred care to children and their families by developing a philosophy and personal
model of children and adolescent nursing.

The first year registered nurse will be encouraged to develop advanced critical thinking and
problem-solving skills throughout their program and into their professional careers. They
will also learn invaluable skills for communicating with children and families.

Program structure

During the program, the first year registered nurse has the opportunity to consolidate
practice in the clinical setting. Clinical settings include:
·         Perioperative service stream (anaesthetics, recovery, scrub/scout and day stay) (CHW)
·         Recovery (SCH)
·         Adolescent surgery/medical
·         Oncology/haematology
·         Burns/plastic surgery
·         Neuroscience
·         Cardiothoracic
·         Surgical
·         Orthopaedic
·         Medical
·         Isolation/infectious diseases

12 | P a g e
·         Day stay/medical and surgical
·         Renal/liver/kidney/transplants (CHW)
·         Neonatal intensive care (CHW)
·         Gastroenterology/ endocrinology/rheumatology

·         Paediatric intensive care unit

Participants are given an opportunity to indicate their ward preferences during the 12 month
program.

Honours program with the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network

The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network offers first-year registered nurses the opportunity
to undertake their honours program while continuing to work as a first-year registered
nurse. Program participants will be employed on either a 12-month full-time or a 24-month
part-time contract.
The Hospitals will support program participants through the provision of study leave to
attend their university commitments and participants are encouraged to apply for nursing
scholarships at the Hospital.
The honours program is supported by the Nursing Research and Practice Development Unit
who assist participants with their project through supervision, regular meetings and
workshops. Honours program participants will have the opportunity to rotate through
general and specialty areas in the Hospital.

Education and learning within the program

The first year registered nurse is provided with a number of educational study days
throughout the year which are designed to complement the clinical placement.
The GradStart program encourages participants to attend clinical support sessions to foster
reflective practice. A strong element of the program is to encourage the program participant
to use reflection as a means of gaining a greater awareness of their performance and their
personal and professional self to ensure they are providing quality, person-centred nursing
care.
Each clinical area offers organisational and specialty education sessions. All program
participants are encouraged to participate in these learning opportunities.

Learning experiences
The GradStart program will challenge participants to think critically about current
knowledge, practice and the implementation of evidence-based practice in the clinical
setting. The participants will be encouraged to be ongoing and self-directed in their learning
and supported in identifying their own learning objectives and goals.
All program participants are required to complete compulsory assessable components,
including work-based learning assessments and theoretical work.

13 | P a g e
Support
A comprehensive orientation program will facilitate the integration of nurses into the
Hospital and ward environment within The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network.
Each nurse will be assigned a preceptor. This process enhances orientation and adjustment
to the clinical area and assists in the development of clinical skills and knowledge.
Support will also be provided by the program educators as well as multidisciplinary staff on
the ward, including nurse unit managers, nurse educators, clinical nurse educators, clinical
nurse specialists and nursing staff.

First-year registered nurses are provided with guidance in relation to their ongoing career

We will offer PPT in the wards rotation only. The expectation is that the graduate
must do at least 3x 8 hour shifts per week when commencing as PPT

·         The application process requests a 1 page cover lette . A cover letter of 1x small
paragraph or extending beyond the 1 page limit will inevitably see the applicant not
progress to interview.

·         Evidence that the applicant knows about the hospital is important – they should
research if they have not been here as a student. We are a busy surgical hospital and
perform approximately 22-24,000 cases a year. If the applicant tells us that they are
interested in mental health or medical nursing they are unlikely to progress to
interview as we do not offer these services

·         The student needs to be aware that when applying to a Healthscope hospital they
must apply to each hospital independently and they may advertise at different times.
Be careful when submitting the same application letter to multiple hospitals. We will
not accept an application that is addressed to the graduate coordinator of a different
Healthscope hospital or includes the name of an alternative hospital within the cover
letter or objectives section of a CV.  So message is: be careful and pay attention to
detail.

The role of the Registered Nurse is the holistic assessment and personalised planning of
therapeutic and daily care needs of our residents/clients. Registered Nurses focus on
delivering high quality, coordinated clinical care which involves the delegation and
supervision of Enrolled Nurses and Carers, and collaboration with the person, their decision-
makers (if applicable), and medical and other health professionals.

ENROLLED NURSE
Enrolled Nurses work under the delegation and supervision of Registered Nurses to provide
and coordinate the care of residents/clients, supervise Care staff and support the effective and
efficient functioning of the care team.  Enrolled Nurses are responsible for ongoing
assessment, planning and evaluation of resident/client care, acting as a resource for
employees supporting and monitoring training and assessing the competency of care staff.

EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Regis invests significantly in its’ professional development programs to enable our
employees to make a career out of doing what they love. Continued organisational growth
means we are uniquely placed to offer exceptional opportunities and pathways which ensure
we attract, retain and build on the passion and knowledge of our people. Whether team
members are looking to fast track their career or want to improve skills in a specific area,
programs are available via a range of mediums – face-to-face, online through People Central
Learning or through one of the education providers we partner with.

GRADUATE NURSE PROGRAM

Graduate Nurses employed by Regis participate in an eleven-month development program to
support them in their first year as Registered Nurses.  The program is unique to the
organisation and is designed to guide their professional development as clinicians and clinical
shift leaders. Our Graduate Nurses are supported by highly experienced Nurse Preceptors,
Clinical Managers and nurse colleagues, to work through a structured plan aimed at ensuring

the delivery of excellent clinical care for our residents whilst building the individual Nurses’
capability and confidence. Regis believes that the benefit of this program is growing and
retaining high quality, committed Registered Nurses and developing nursing leaders of the
future.

GRADUATE NURSE PRECEPTOR

The Graduate Nurse Preceptor is responsible for working with each Graduate Nurse to build
clinical skills, confidence, leadership capability, critical thinking and decision-making ability,
following a structured development framework. The Preceptor provides support visits to
Graduates, shadowing Graduates as they work, providing one-to-one coaching on the job.
The Preceptor also consults with the Facility Manager and Clinical Manager about the
Graduate’s progress against program milestones.

BOOST PROGRAM
The BOOST program is designed to ensure all Regis Nurses are delivering consistently high-
quality care to our residents.  BOOST is a 3-day face-to-face program lead by subject matter
experts who are themselves experienced Registered Nurses.
BOOST focusses on clinical documentation, specialised nursing care, shift management and
leadership skills.  Classes consist of small cohorts of Enrolled and Registered Nurses which
enable the sharing of experiences and ensures competence.

ADVANCE PROGRAM
The Regis Advance Registered Nurse program is a 4-month commitment designed to support
the development of our most talented Registered Nurses who aspire to become our Clinical
Managers of the future.  This course provides a career pathway that enables these Registered
Nurses to act in relieving Clinical Manager roles to backfill leave and support other homes,
thus gaining valuable experience and supporting their career development.
The Advance program provides 5 days of face-to-face learning lead by subject matter experts
covering:
Advanced Clinical Care, clinical oversight, audit and analysis of clinical indicators data
Human resource management, business skills, funding and documentation
People management and leadership
Participants receive in-depth coaching and support throughout the program from Clinical
Managers as they work through a series of activities to complete the requirements of their
program.  Their hard work is then celebrated with a Graduation day.
