‘A Lifetime in Time’
Short Film

Proposal
Rationale
Since the beginning of the course I have had many opportunities to learn a range of new skills and
also develop my understanding of the industry and its expectations. A lot of the skills I have learnt
are practical based and can be applied to the production process, which has reflected positively on
my work, and I feel there has been a significant improvement in my work over the last 18 months.
One area that I have seen the most improvement in is my editing. When I began the course my
knowledge of this area was fairly limited, however now I am much more confident that I can put
together a high quality piece of work, using the skills I have learnt. I can now edit various
productions, including music videos, short films, and documentaries. I feel my editing skills have
improved the most when editing audio, as it is something I had no experience of at the start of the
course, yet now I know how to edit sound so that it is used effectively and suits the visuals on
screen. I also feel I have a much stronger understanding of narrative compared to last year, and I
now know what is needed to create a strong story, and what elements have to be used to
communicate this. My improvements over the last 18 months have helped me to choose my
discipline and outline my goals for this project. I want to produce a piece with a strong narrative, as
it is something I enjoy and feel my skills have developed and now have a lot of potential. My
immediate aspirations for this unit is to produce a distinction standard piece of work. And as I
continue to study filmmaking I want to develop my skills further and learn more about the industry
itself.

Project Concept
My aim for this project is to produce a short film with a strong narrative. I want to produce a piece of
work that is moving and leaves the audience with a lot to think about. Narrative is something I have
learnt a great deal about since starting the second year of this course. I have developed a new set of
skills that help me to identify the style of narrative within a piece, a well as an understanding of what
makes a narrative effective. I have also improved my sound editing skills since the start of the course
and as a result I have decided to include a voice-over narrative in my short film. I feel this project will
give me the best chances to demonstrate the skills I have learnt and that I will be able to use them to
produce a high quality piece of work. Throughout the production process I plan to carry out a range
of research so that I can ensure my work is as accurate and informed as possible. I will research
information that will support my narrative and help me to develop my idea further. My research will
change and develop as the process continues, so that I am always furthering my knowledge and
finding new information that is appropriate for my final project. I want to produce a short film that is
around 8 – 10 minutes long as I feel this will give me the appropriate amount of time needed to
showcase a developed narrative and communicate the message of the piece. I will use a range of
tools to help me ensure my work is completed to a high standard, such as camera’s and stabilising
equipment to produce visuals that will communicate my narrative and alongside this props that can
be used to support the narrative. I will also make use of the college facilities and computers so that I
have access to Adobe Premiere Pro when editing my production. As the process continues I plan to
include a great deal of independent study to make sure my work is always up to date and so that I
can be confident I will meet the deadlines set out. This will be completed both at home and in
between classes at college, where I will make use of the classroom space. This will mean I can

dedicate more time to my research and use class time to work on anything I may need more support
with. I plan to incorporate peer feedback into my work by sending out regular surveys as my work
progresses. This will help me to reflect on my work’s development and to highlight where
improvements could be made. I will also receive feedback from my teachers which will help me in a
similar manner.

Evaluation
As I continue with this project I expect my ideas to develop and change. I plan to document these
changes to show the development of my ideas, and the impact my research has had on them. These
changes will be documented in my weekly blogs, which I will complete at the end of every week.
Within these blogs I will be able to reflect on the changes my work has undergone and the progress I
have made. They will also give the chance to highlight where improvements could be made and
acknowledge any mistakes I have made. I will also complete a much more in depth evaluation at the
end of the project, where I will reflect on the process as a whole. In this evaluation I will look back on
my work and consider whether I have met the aims I set for myself at the start, and if not, why. I will
be able to outline how my ideas have progressed since the beginning of the project, and whether
the improvements I have made were successful. As I complete my work I will be comparing it to
existing professional productions so that I can see to what standard my own has been completed, as
well as which improvements I can make so that my work reflects their successes and
professionalism. Throughout this project I will be receiving peer feedback so that I can develop my
idea further. This will be received using surveys and focus groups. For example, when editing I may
send out my first rough edit so that my audience can suggest what changes can be made, and which
areas are most effective. Throughout the project I will be continuously updating my website,
ensuring that all work displayed is up to date.
