Problems about ideal quantizers, Nyquist ADCs and DACs

Problem 1
Consider a DAC with 8 bits resolution and a reference voltage value equal to 5 V.
Determine the output voltage value when the digital input code is Bin = 10110100.
Calculate the value of the VLSB voltage.

Problem 2
In the case of an ideal DAC with a resolution of 10 bits and VLSB =1 mV what is the
maximum output voltage?

Problem 3
Consider an ADC with 9 bits resolution and a reference voltage value equal to 2 V.
Determine the output code when the input voltage is vin = 0.3V. What are the input
voltages that produce the same output code?

Problem 4
Consider that an ADC with 10bits of resolution and a reference voltage of 2.56V is
used to digitize the voltage produced by the LMT85 temperature sensor. Determine
the resolution of the temperature measuring system and explain how to obtain an
output that corresponds to the temperature in degrees Celcius. The LMT85 produces
an output voltage of 2V for a temperature of -50oC and this voltage changes –8.2
mV/°C.

Problem 5
2
Show that the power of a sine wave signal with amplitude A is given by P = A 2

Problem 6
Show that the power of the quantization noise of an ideal ADC with n bits and a
Vref2
reference voltage Vref is given by VQ2 =
12 × 22⋅n

Problem 7
Consider that a 100 mV amplitude sine wave signal is applied to the input of an ideal
ADC with 12 bits of resolution; with a reference voltage equal to 5 V. Calculate the
SNR at the output of the ADC. What is the maximum possible SNR value; describe
the conditions for this case.

Problem 8
Consider a DAC with 3 bits resolution and a reference voltage value equal to 4 V. The
conversion characteristic of this DAC was measured and is as follows:
{0.011 ; 0.507 ; 1.002 ; 1.501 ; 1.996 ; 2.495 ; 2.996 ; 3.491}(V)
a) Calculate the value (in LSBs) of the offset and end of scale error.
b) Calculate the INL and DNL.
c) Calculate the linearity of the DAC
Problem 9
Consider that sine wave signal is applied to the input of an ideal ADC with 12 bits,
the output of the ADC is analyzed (using an FFT) and the signal power is measured to
be 1 W, the remaining power in the output spectrum is 0.5µW. Calculate the effective
number of bits of the ADC (ENOB).

Problem 10
What is the SNR of an ideal ADC with 12 bits of resolution and a reference voltage
value equal to 3 V, when the input signal is a sine wave with 1 V of amplitude? What
should the input amplitude be in order to have a SNR value equal to 0 dB.

Problem 11
Show that the power of the noise due to the jitter noise in the sampling clock of an
ideal sample and hold, for an input signal with amplitude A and frequency f, is given
2
by VNjitter = A2 × 2 × π 2 × f 2 × σ 2jitter

Problem 12
Calculate the maximum jitter noise allowed for the sampling clock of an ideal 16 bit
ADC with a maximum input signal frequency of 20 kHz. Assume that the ENOB of
the converter is 0.5 lower than the theoretical maximum value.

Problem 13
Consider an ADC with a reference voltage equal to 1 V that samples an input signal
with a frequency of 10 MHz and an amplitude of 100 mV. Assuming that the
sampling clock has a jitter noise power of 4ps rms, what is the required resolution of
the ADC in order to have a SNR value of 43 dB in the output signal?

Problem 14
Model and simulate the previous system in order to measure its SNR.

Problem 15
Assume that you want to build a system that can digitize an input signal with a
maximum frequency value of 60 MHz and maximum signal amplitude of 1 V. The
system should have an SNR value of 30 dB for an input amplitude of 20 mV.
Determine what is the minimum resolution of the ADC and the maximum jitter noise
allowed for the sampling clock of the system.

Problem 16
Considering the previous problem, assuming that the signal frequency is increased to
100 MHz and that ADC has an input referred noise voltage of 0.2 mVrms. Determine
what is the minimum resolution of the ADC and the maximum jitter noise allowed for
the sampling clock of the system.
