QUEEN’S COLLEGE CAPE 1.

1 TEST 2016-2017
Time: 1 hour 10 minutes

INSTRUCTIONS: Answer ALL questions. If an answer cannot be given exactly then state it to three
significant figures, unless otherwise stated. Full marks may not be given unless full working is shown.

3𝑥−8
1. Solve the inequality | | >1 [6]
𝑥−2

2. The expression 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑎𝑥 3 − 8𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 6 is exactly divisible by 𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 − 3. Find the

values of 𝑎 and 𝑏. [6]
3. If 𝛼, 𝛽 and 𝛾 are the roots of the equation 𝑥 3 − 3𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 + 1 = 0

Evaluate
(a) α + β + γ
(b) αβ + βγ + αγ
(c) 𝛼𝛽𝛾
(d) α3 + 𝛽 3 + 𝛾 3
(e) Find a cubic equation whose roots are 𝛼 − 1, 𝛽 − 1, and 𝛾 − 1. [13]

4. Prove by induction that 5𝑛 − 4𝑛 − 1 is exactly divisible by 16 for all integral values of

𝑛, 𝑛 ≥ 1 [7]

5. By drawing a truth table show that ~[( 𝑝 → 𝑟) ⋁ 𝑞] ≡ 𝑝 ∧ ∼ (𝑞 ∨ 𝑟) [7]

6. The value G, of a bank account in which $900 is invested at 5% compound interest is given
by
𝐺 = 900(1.05)𝑡
where 𝑡 is the time in years.
(a) Calculate the value of the account after 3 years [2]
(b) Find t in terms of G. [4]
7. Express 5√243 − 6√147 in the form 𝑘√𝑏 where 𝑘 and 𝑏 ∈ ℤ [3]

8. (a) Solve 32𝑥+1 − 14(3𝑥 ) − 5 = 0

(b) Given that 𝑥 = 2𝑦 , 𝑦 > 0 express in terms of 𝑦
(i) log 2 𝑥 (ii) log 𝑥 2
(iii) hence or otherwise solve the equation log 2 𝑥 = 8 log 𝑥 2 + 2 [13]
9. Given the function 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 7, 𝑥 𝜖 ℝ

(a) Write the function in the form 𝑝(𝑥 + 𝑞)2 + 𝑟 where 𝑝, 𝑞 and 𝑟 are integers. [3]

(b) Is 𝑓 injective? Give a reason for your answer. [2]

(c) Is 𝑓 surjective? Give a reason for your answer. [2]

(d) Suggest a restriction for the domain of f(x) to form an injective function

𝑔(𝑥)= 2𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 7 𝑥 𝜖 ℝ, 𝑥 ≥ 𝑘, clearly identifying 𝑘. [1]

(d) Hence find 𝑔−1 , stating the domain. [3]
