ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH THE NAME

“HENRY KISSINGER”?
Yes, Henry Kissinger is an American
diplomat and politician who served as
National Security Advisor and Secretary of
State.

During his tenure, Kissinger played a major

role in several peace treaties. First,
Kissinger successfully negotiated a peace
settlement between The USA and Vietnam
regarding the Vietnam War. Because of this
settlement, Kissinger received the Nobel
Peace Prize in 1973.

Second, Kissinger relaxed the tension between The USA and the Soviet Union
during the Cold War. Kissinger also successfully built the foundation of the
economic and cultural relationship between his country and China, which, at
that time, were the part of the East block (Soviet Union).

Third, Kissinger became the mediator of the conflicting parties (Egypt-Saudi

Arabia vs Israel) in the Yom Kippur War. With Kissinger (and The USA)
interference, the conflicting parties finally reached a peace settlement. The
settlement also led to the growing relationship between The USA and Egypt.

Because of his actions, Kissinger, according to culturalrelations.org, is

regarded as one of

the most influential diplomats of the 20th century.

Now, the question is, how could Kissinger did all of these things?
The answer is simple. With brilliant diplomacy and negotiation skills.
And this is why a great diplomat should possess those two skills.

SO, WHAT ARE

DIPLOMACY AND NEGOTIATION?
Diplomacy is the art of conducting
negotiations between nations, groups, or
individuals. Meanwhile, negotiation is a
discussion between at least two parties
that is intended to result in an agreement
from all parties involved.

As you can see, negotiation and diplomacy

are interrelated. You will not be able to
negotiate properly without diplomacy. On
the other hand, your diplomacy skill will be
wasteful if you don’t know how to
negotiate.

Kissinger’s story told us about how important diplomacy and negotiation are.
With magnificent diplomacy and negotiation skills, Kissinger avoided his
country from a lot of unworthy wars.

WHAT ABOUT YOU?

How could diplomacy and negotiation benefit your life?
Well, there are several things that you should consider.

FIRST, diplomacy and negotiation are

essential for a diplomat.
We know that most of you are dreaming of becoming a diplomat. Well, you can
say goodbye to your dream if you cannot negotiate and have a good sense of
diplomacy. If you don’t believe it, check the definition of “diplomat” according
to Merriam-Webster.
“One employed or skilled in diplomacy”.
Says it all.

SECOND, diplomacy and negotiation could

bring you to a better life.

This is pretty general, but does not mean that this is not true. Yes, with good
negotiation, you could achieve more in this life.

You could get a better price from the sellers in the market, you could get the
amount of salary that you want, and you could get a promotion in your career
with brilliant negotiation skills. Basically, being a good negotiator could bring
you everything that you want.

THIRD, diplomacy and negotiation could

strengthen your relationship with others.

As we have mentioned before, one of the elements of negotiation is

relationship. You will build a relationship as soon as you negotiate with
someone.

Therefore, if your negotiation runs smoothly, you will have a good relationship
with your counterpart. Having a good relationship with other people is, of
course, beneficial for you.

competitors, and you need to stand-out if you want to get chosen.

One thing to raise your value is possessing a good negotiation skill.

Negotiation skill is important because the financial success of a company
really depends on its negotiator. If you could show your negotiation skill to the
recruiter, you will have a bigger chance to land the job.

FIFTH, diplomacy and negotiation are required

in the professional world.

This is why you really, really need to learn negotiation skills. You are going to
enter the professional world soon and everything will be better if you have
good negotiation skills.

You are going to negotiate for your salary, contract, jobdesc, and everything.
You will get a better job with better benefits if you could negotiate better.

YOU DON’T BELIEVE IT?

Well, a recruiting software company, Jobvite, conducted a research of 2.287
people in The USA in 2017 about negotiation in work. The research showed

NOW, THE QUESTION IS,

How to be better in diplomacy and negotiation?
We have some tips for you!

1. Always do Your Homework

The most important part of the negotiation process is

preparation. Before you are negotiating, make sure you
are well-prepared.

Check your goal. Do research on the product and on

your counterpart. Prepare your strategy. Explore some
persuasion tricks. And, do not forget to have
alternatives. Double-check to make sure that all of your
plans are well-placed.

2. Practice Your Communication

Communication is one of the elements of negotiation

and it has a big impact on how your negotiation is
going. Therefore, it is crucial for you to practice your
communication.

Firstly, you need to practice your listening skill in order

to understand your counterpart. Try to focus and do not
interrupt when people are talking to you.

Secondly, practice your speaking ability. Explore many

persuasive words and practice them when you have the
chance. After all, negotiation is about what you speak
to the opposing party.

Last but not least, pay attention to your gesture. You are
more likely to get a better result if you look confident
and professional. And do not forget to keep your temper
during negotiation.

3. Have a Smooth Opening Maneuvert

After you understand the person you’re about to talk to,

you have to approach him/her smoothly by having a
small talk.

You can ask where they come from, ask them about
their interests, and their opinion regarding the topic of
your discussion. Remember to be friendly and that’s
how you can know them more as a person, and later you
can approach them psychologically.

4. Hear Them Out

When you initiate a conversation, all you have to do is

listen to your partners, even if you completely disagree
with their position. You will not get anywhere in a
negotiation if you lose your temper or appear annoyed
with them.

Keep a smile, understand their position, and always

make eye contact with them so they know you are
giving them your full attention.

5. Know Your Value

Spare time to examine your product (yourself). This is

important if you want to propose a fair deal and if you
want to strike the best.

If you are not really sure about how much you worth,
always set a reasonable goal. But, if you believe that
you deserved more, just be confident and ask for it.

6. Put Yourself in Their Shoes

Always try to see the situation from every point of

view. Are they even in a position where they could do
what you want them to do?

Not only that you have to be prepared with

information on your position, but you also need to
know theirs as well.

7. Be Ready to Concede

Your preparation might be perfect, but you will never

know if you are going to meet some unpleasant
surprises during your negotiation.

If you are mentally prepared, you will be fine if you

find these surprises and you could not find an
agreement with the opposing party. Moreover, you
could learn something and be a better negotiator.

8. Stay Respectful

Sometimes, diplomacy and negotiation processes

could be draining. Some people even lose their
temper.

This will not happen if you stay respectful towards

your interlocutors. It’s okay to have any disagreement,
but remember to be respectful.

These eight tips will help you to execute smooth diplomacy and negotiation.
However, the best way to learn about diplomacy and negotiation is by

PRACTICING THEM.
You could do a role-play with your friend to train your diplomacy and
negotiation skills. Another thing that you could do is to practice your
negotiation skills when you are buying something in a traditional market.

Nevertheless, do you know that you can practice your diplomatic and
negotiation skills in a fun way? Try to participate in a Model United Nations
(MUN).

Well, you know that MUN is a simulation of a conference in the United Nations.
You will be role-playing as a delegate of one country, and you will have to
negotiate with other delegates. This kind of activity will help you to enhance
your diplomacy and negotiation skills.
