vc Violence against women is very timely nowadays where one third or 30% of

women were reportedly abused by their partners around the world. And since we faced

pandemic, the number of abusive reports doubled. Domestic violence is one of the

many social issues that societies face. Research has it that the female group is the one

that becomes victimized the most. Domestic violence lowers human dignity, and

therefore, the world should come out and condemn it in the strongest terms possible.

Should we tolerate it or should we start battling with the silent battle within us and

have courage to speak?

In the poem “The Whisper” by Melchor Cichon, the struggles of the wife were

discussed wherein she received all pain and violence she had gone through by her

husband. It tells us about how she managed to deal with it and continue being

voiceless and she is becoming the tail of her husband. On the first line, “aboy-aboy,

batya, and patadyong,” we can simply see the struggles of her doing unending chores.

It is considered to be their responsibility as the head of the household to do most of the

daily chores and look after their children. Chain, that represents the marriage between

them that leads her to the mistake she will take until she dies. Abuse can also be seen

if you visualize the lines “And put ice on my swollen lips, A gift from my husband”s

quick fists” that simply implies the unending beatings she received from her husband

again and again.

The poem simply tells us that her husband is taking advantage of the weakness

of her since men are more physically strong and he has more power to do what he
wants. It is said that almost 5,000 women are killed each year due to physical abuse,

such as hitting, kicking, punching, and sexual activities such as rapes. Some national

studies show that the number can be as high as 70 per cent of women, and that rates

of depression, having an abortion, and acquiring HIV are higher in women who have

experienced this type of violence compared to women who have not.

Abuse is something we should not tolerate so many countries in the world have

passed some laws that give protection to the women and their children where they act

as a shield to those who are voiceless and do not have courage to speak up about the

abuses they received. One of this is the Republic Act 9262: Anti-Violence Against

Women and Their Children Act of 2004 of the Republic of the Philippines that values the

dignity of women and children and guarantees full respect for human rights.

“Some women fear the fire, some women simply become it.” Women should be

the image of power and strength not fear and weakness. Do not let the water wash out

what’s burning inside you. A body of a woman is more sacred than any other objects

being praised. Start being the voice of change that could lift the burning passion you

have being a caring mother. Be the symbol of hope for everyone and continue proving

to them that women are worthy fighting for.
