PHS3263 IHE Week2 Task 2 C1

This document provides an overview of an industrial hygiene and ergonomics class. It includes a summary of three key points from Chapter 1: (1) the elements of industrial hygiene including anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of hazards; (2) common occupational health hazards like chemical, biological and ergonomic hazards; and (3) the responsibilities of industrial hygienists in analyzing and eliminating workplace hazards. It also summarizes that record keeping is an important risk management tool for the agricultural industry, allowing businesses to ensure safety policies are followed and identify areas for health and safety improvements.

PHS3263 INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE AND ERGONOMICS

WEEK 2 TASK 2
DURING CLASS

Ensure that you go through, read Chapter 1 Introduction to Industrial Hygiene. Most of the
slides are self explainatory. In you own words, summarize at least three (3) most important
points you think about this chapter. Also explain and answer slide no. 22 using your own
words. You need to search and find from resouces available around, ex. Notes, books,
internet etc. Upload your completed task to Elearning. The title of the file should be your full
name. Make sure you do this during your class time ok.
Any question please use our elearning platform, email or our whatsapps group.

Ts Muhamad Rodzi
Three most important point about this chapter

1. Industrial hygiene element or function.

Industrial hygiene is the science of anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling
workplace conditions that may cause workers' injury or illness. Industrial hygienists use
environmental monitoring and analytical methods to detect the extent of worker exposure and
employ engineering, work practice controls, and other methods to control potential health
hazards. Anticipation is the prospective recognition or predicting of hazardous conditions
based on chemistry, physics, engineering, and toxicology. Recognition is both detection &
identification of hazards or their adverse effects through chemistry, physics & epidemiology.
Evaluation is the quantitative measurement of exposure to environmental hazards & the
qualitative interpretation of those hazards. Control is conception, education, design, and
implementation of beneficial interventions carried out that reduce, minimize, or eliminate
hazardous conditions.

2. Occupational health hazards

Conditions that cause legally compensable sickness or other occupational conditions that
sufficiently affect employee wellbeing to make them miss time from work or cause serious
pain. They're both undesirable. They're both preventable. Their rectification is a duty of
management. When performing a workplace analysis, an industrial hygienist must consider
many different types of hazards to protect the health and safety of workers. These include the
following hazards that can be grouped into the following hazard types:
Chemical Hazards
Chemical hazards can take the form of solids, liquids, gases, mists, dusts, fumes, and vapors.
Workers can be harmed by these hazardous chemicals through different types of exposures,
including:
 Inhalation (breathing the chemical)
 Absorption (direct contact with the skin)
 Ingestion (eating or drinking the chemical)
Biological Hazards
Biological hazards include living organisms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Biological
hazards can cause serious infections. These can be chronic, meaning they have a rapid onset
and last for a short time, or acute, meaning they last for a long time and/or constantly recur.
Both acute and chronic infections can be serious and even fatal.
Ergonomic Hazards
Ergonomic hazards are hazards caused when performing workplace tasks that include (but are
not limited to) lifting, holding, pushing, walking, and reaching.
3. Responsibilities of Industrial Hygiene.
Industrial hygienists analyze, identify, and measure workplace hazards or stressors that can
cause sickness, impaired health, or significant discomfort in workers through chemical,
physical, ergonomic, or biological exposures. Two roles of the OSHA industrial hygienist are
to spot those conditions and help eliminate or control them through appropriate measures.

From slide no 22, Record keeping is a challenging task for all business owners, but in the
agricultural industry, keeping up-to-date and accurate records will not only save you time and
stress, but you'll be addressing your work health and safety responsibilities too. Record
keeping is a useful risk management tool. Among your records should be a full set of up-to-
date safety policies. This will help with new staff induction, current staff training updates and
ensuring you meet insurance requirements. Keeping accurate records also allows you to check
the health and safety performance of your business and make improvements where necessary.
Naturally, the size and scale of your business will determine the detail and extent of recording
you'll need to make, but even a basic register of safety policies and induction records is a
good place to start.
