VIRTUES, VICES AND HABITS OF THE HEALTHCARE PROVIDER?

1. What do you think will happen to the healthcare profession when it is practiced by the professional
who resort to fraud, pride, and greed? Explain your answer and provide concrete examples.
The healthcare profession is considered as noble because it is known to be a profession of
both intellect and compassion in treating or caring individuals who are sick or in need of medical
attention. Therefore, being a part of this profession is something that is to be proud of. But, a
professional like nurses, doctors, attendant and others who don’t put at heart his or her duties or
responsibilities as a healthcare provider by doing vicious acts brings shame to the profession. The
healthcare profession will lose the honor and respect that it receives from the people as its clients. An
example is the news about the incident of a female teenager who died on one of the hospitals in the
province of Muntinlupa. According to the report, the patient had thryroid storm and brought to the
hospital because of difficulty of breathing due to reduced oxygen levels. The patient’s condition
became worse after the doctor failed to insert her tube even after four tries until her throat can’t open
anymore due to trauma. The patient was advised to be admitted on the ICU, but before admitting the
patient, the hospital told the family to pay 50,000 first. The family pleaded the hospital to accept their
money on hand that time which is 18, 000 then promised to pay their balance at the same day but the
hospital didn’t accept.
All the actions of the healthcare professionals reflects to the
healthcare profession as a whole. This is only one of the news being broadcasted on TV about hospital
issues that leaves a negative impression to the people about the healthcare profession. Example is the
impression that they can only avail medical attention if they have financial means to pay expensive
hospital bills. That is why there are some severely sick individuals but don’t consult to the hospital
because as they always say, “hindi kami mayaman, wala kaming pera pangpagamot”. This ideology
greatly affects the role of the healthcare profession in providing the equal right of every individual to
health as what the healthcare providers sworn on their oath.
2. List down some possible damages that fraud, pride, and greed may bring to the healthcare
profession.
GREED COMPROMISES QUALITY OF CARE
 Greed is seldom mentioned in the waterfall of words about the health care crisis. It is an old-
fashioned word, and judgmental. Our nation’s health care is infected by greed. The problem
of greed impedes access to and quality of health care for all of us. The best interest of the
patient is increasingly being sidelined in favor of a selfish concerns. An example is in the case
of a doctor in the US whose yearly income exceeds 4 million dollars. Literally busloads of
patients from nursing homes arrive at this doctor's office and without a sham of a physical
examination undergo a surgical procedure with the postoperative care left entirely to a nurse.

AFFECTS THE PROFESSION'S PHILOSOPHY OF SERVICE.

 Where most healthcare providers were trained to believe that their service is based solely on
trust, with firstly avoiding harm as the ultimate measure of every medical action, an ethic of
greed changes the elemental belief that the buyer is always responsible. With an ethic of
healthcare professional like doctors cease to base their motivation on compassion and caring
to become merchants selling medical services to the highest bidder.
PHYSICAL RISK TO PATIENTS
 Shockingly, the perpetrators of some types of health care greed and fraud schemes
deliberately and callously place trusting patients at significant risk of injury or even death. It's
distressing to imagine, but there have been many cases where patients have been subjected to
unnecessary or dangerous medical procedures simply because of greed. Unnecessary
procedures can result in countless irreversible outcomes such as patients losing their ability to
have children or losing full physical mobility.
LIMITS ACCESS TO CARE FOR POOR PATIENTS
 Some of the more common types of fraud committed by dishonest providers includes billing
for services that were never rendered—by using genuine patient information, sometimes
obtained through identity theft, to fabricate entire claims or by padding otherwise legitimate
claims with charges for procedures or services that did not take place and Unbundling billing
for each step of a procedure as if they are separate procedures. .
ROOT OF DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED IN DEVELOPING TEAM-BASED APPROACHES
TO IMPROVING CARE
 Patient safety experts agree that communication and teamwork skills are essential for
providing quality health care. When all clinical and nonclinical staff collaborate effectively,
health care teams can improve patient outcomes, prevent medical errors, improve efficiency
and increase patient satisfaction. If otherwise, it compromises the healthcare services rendered
to patients.
PRIDE AS A DISRESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR
 It chills communication and collaboration, undercuts individual contributions to care,
undermines staff morale, increases staff resignations and absenteeism, creates an unhealthy or
hostile work environment, causes some to abandon their profession, and ultimately harms
patients.

3. Do you think the Filipinos, as a people, will tolerate healthcare providers who will resort to fraud,
pride, and greed? Why?
Filipinos, as a people will not tolerate healthcare providers who will resort to fraud, pride and
greed because they are also affected with the negative consequences or results of these actions. Us,
Filipinos always react if we feel violated. We react in many ways like what is common today which
is posting our feelings, thoughts or comments on the social media or filing a complaint against the
offender since there are laws that is meant to give justice for us if we are offended. Example is the
Universal Health Care Law signed by President Duterte could be used against dishonest healthcare
professionals. One of its aims is to help solve fraudulent claims that has been an issue at the
Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth). In line with this, the Corporation recently signed a
Memorandum of Agreement with the National Bureau of Investigation and commenced a
strengthened effort to suppress fraud. PhilHealth also joined hands with the Philippine Medical
Association and Philippine Hospital Association to confront erring health care institutions; while the
Professional Regulation Commission was tapped to dispense sanctions upon dishonest health
professionals.
