The video documents Dr. Nelson visiting the Dumagat tribe in Norzagaray, Bulacan to search for endemic wild plants. He notices some deforestation and increase in housing. The tribe's homes are made of woven bamboo. Dr. Nelson accompanies tribe elders Aling Yolly and Mang Rodrigo into the forest, where they find and harvest "ubag" root, an endemic plant resembling turmeric. After an unfruitful two hours of fishing in the river, capturing only three fish, the video illustrates the difficulty of the tribe's lifestyle in surviving and living healthily off the land.

CONTENT: Based on the video, Bro. Martin Francisco, the chairman of Sagip Sierra Madre environmental society, he described the three types of Dumagat Tribe that were mostly found and live in the highlands of Sierra Madre. They were the “Agta”, which their language spoken is “Bulus”. They are found in the province of Norzagaray, Bulacan. Next is the “Alta”, which their language is “Kabuluwan”. They are commonly found also in Bulacan. Lastly, the “Remontado”, they are considered as “Meztizo”. According to Dr. Nestor Castro, a Cultural Anthropologist in University of the Philippines, Dumagat Tribe is considered as part of Negrito Group. They are kind of people who are travelling from one place to another because the mode of their survival are hunting animals and gathering foods that are available in their location. The video showed that they still wearing their traditional clothes because it is part of their culture and the organization that Bro. Martin builds which has a purpose of preserving the indigenous culture of Dumagat. He also said that they don’t have the intention to change the culture of Dumagats’ but to learn additional knowledge to cope up with the generation today. They also have their tribal hall which is made of woods and some parts is made of bamboos. This tribal hall serve as their accommodation area for their visitors and other social gatherings. They have their own small church made of stones. Others perspective, Dumagat people are lazy, they don’t believe in God, they are the one who destroy the nature through Kaingin, they don’t have their permanent homes or called “lagalag”, they don’t have civilization and culture. But when Bro. Martin lives with them for almost 24 years since 1996, he change his mind set about Dumagat People. The truth is, Dumagats’ don’t have the freedom to express their own culture to others. They are not the kind of people mentioned above. Other people telling that Dumagat are lazy people because they get some woods only when they needed but the truth is that particular practices are part of their culture, which is they don’t cut trees, they just getting dried stems of the trees available in their location. So that is the reason why that the highlands of Sierra Madre are still in its form and beauty. The Dumagat tribe practices that never dies is the “pagnganganga” or for further explanation is they chewing some particular leaves that is called ‘litlit”, “bunga ng yantok”, “maskada” and tabacco and “apon” that makes their teeth stronger. In their location, there is no source of water. And they are always praying for the rain to come. They built a system that collects water from the roof during the rain and they filter it by using cloth and adding some chlorine on it. There have also generator set donated by other agency, but sadly they can’t use it because of lack of cables on it. So when the night comes, the whole community is filled by darkness. Aside from their problem in source of electricity and water, they are suffering in health problems. Like skin problems of the children that came from the do. In the video documentation, they also show their health center in the community but still under construction because of lack of budget. But for now they use their tribal kitchen as their health center. Along the travel of Doc. Nelson, he notice the changes in some part of the mountains. There are some patches that means deforestation, some traces of “kaingin” and also number of housing are increasing. Their houses are made by bamboo which is the method of weaving is called “sawali” in elders that we usually saw in baskets. Doc. Nelson met the elders leading the tribe, Aling Yolly and Mang Rodrigo. We notice the clothing of the tribe is adapted by the modern clothing like t-shirt, short and others. Doc. Nelson together with Aling Yolly and Mang Rodrigo, they went in the forest and find their source of food. They found the root crafts which they called it “ubag” from the root of “baging”. Based on Doc. Nelson, “ubag” is an endemic plant in the Philippines. It smells like “singkamas” and the resin of it is itchy. After digging “ubag”, they go to the river to catch some fish. They use arrow of a bow to catch fish and they start to dive into the water. Doc Nelson also joined them to find some fish. But after two hours in the water, they have only three pieces. Imagine their life, it was really hard to survive and live with a healthy life. As years goes by, Dumagat people already recognized by the community. So that many tourist want to meet them and go to their community. Due to high number of tourist came in their community, it cause some damage to their nature. Some tourist don’t have discipline in their waste. Maybe the government should implement some rules and regulation in the community to avoid environmental issue. We already saw that they cooked their food through the use of bamboo only.
