988 A.D. - Region adopted Christianity by the official act of public baptism of Kiev inhabitants by
Prince Vladimir I.
By the end of 11th century – Slavs Shifted to heavily forested regions of the north ‘Zalesye’ due to
regular attacks from nomadic Turkic people ‘Kipchaks’

11 to 13 Century - Kievan Rus' ultimately disintegrated as a state because of in-fighting between
members of the princely family that ruled it collectively.
- Kiev's dominance waned, to the benefit of Vladimir-Suzdal in the north-east,
Novgorod in the north, and Halych-Volhynia in the south-west.

13 Century - Conquest by the Mongol Golden Horde in the 13th century was the final blow to Keiv.

Mongol Invasion/Tatar (Golden Horde Invasion)

1223 A.D. - disunited southern princes defeated by Mongol Raiding Party at River Kalka

1237–1238 A.D. – Mongols burnt down city of Vladmir and other major cities

- Mongols then Moved West to Poland and Hungry

- Only Novogrod escaped occupation and continued to flourish

- The princes of southern and eastern Russia had to pay tribute to the Mongols of the Golden Horde

Mid 13th century - Alexander Nevsky, elected prince of Novgorod, acquired heroic status as the result
of major victories over the Teutonic Knights and the Swedes.
-Alexander had obtained Mongol protection and assistance in fighting
Teutonic Knights and the Swedes.

Grand Duchy of Moscow


End of 13th century - Daniil Aleksandrovich, the youngest son of Alexander Nevsky, founded the
principality of Moscow
- Moscow was initially a vassal of Vladmir, but eventually absorbed the parent
state.
- Moscow had received cooperation from Mongols who made them agents for
collecting the Tatar tribute from the Russian principalities.
1299 A.D. – Head of Russian Orthodox Church, ‘Metropolitan’, fled from Kiev to Vladimir
- a few years later established the permanent headquarters of the Church in Moscow
under the original title of Kiev Metropolitan.

1380 A.D. - Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy, of Moscow defeated Mongols, but could not end their rule
in Russia

Ivan III, the Great


15th Century - the grand princes of Moscow went on gathering Russian lands to increase the
population and wealth under their rule
- Ivan III was most successful practitioner of this process
- Ivan III laid the foundations for a Russian national state
- Ivan competed with his powerful northwestern rival, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania,
for control over some of the semi-independent Upper Principalities in the upper
Dnieper and Oka River basins.
-Consequently, the Grand Duchy of Moscow tripled in size under his rule
