Pavel is interested in studying Data Engineering and Analytics at TUM because he has always enjoyed working with data from past projects. Through internships and research experiences, he realized he enjoys analyzing and applying machine learning techniques to data. His internship developing software to estimate mineral composition from planetary data solidified his passion for using data analysis to solve challenging problems. Pavel believes the program at TUM will allow him to continue pursuing his interests in areas like computer vision, analytics, and engineering.

I am interested in studying Data Engineering and Analytics at Technical University of Mu-
nich, because as far as I remember I always liked working with data. Whether it was working with stock market data for my final high school project, visual data during my research at Czech Technical University or spectroscopic data during my ESA internship. As my under- graduate studies started, I knew I wanted to develop my passion. I enrolled in extracurricular courses, attended talks and took part in a computer vision summer camp. In the meantime, I was also getting better at algorithmic problem solving. Again through extracurricular courses and summer camps. At the end of the first year I was offered an internship at computer vision research center at my university. During this internship, we have worked on a system that detects decision ambiguity from facial images using machine learning techniques. It was a challenging task that required the use of many tools that I was not familiar with, but I enjoyed it. In the end, we have managed to get our publication accepted into an international conference called Face and Gesture, and as the first author, I got to present it in China. It was throught internships like this where I realised how much I enjoy doing research. Especially research that involves analysing data. When I learned about an exchange programme with one of the best universities in the world, I didn’t hesitate. Studying at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore was a growing opportunity for me. I was adapting to a completely different culture and learning interesting subjects along the way. A few days after arriving from Singapore, I was moving again. This time to Cologne in Germany to start my internship at European Astronaut Center, which is part of European Space Agency. Sharing a working space with astronauts who went to International Space Station was a truly unique experience. That said, it was more important for me to be working on an exciting project with brilliant people. Alongside with amazing engineerings, I have worked on developing machine learning software for estimating chemical and mineralog- ical composition of planetary materials. This software will hopefully be used during future planetary exploration. Apart from getting better understanding of machine learning and data analysis, I eventually became good enough to represent my university in algorithmic problem solving internation- ally. Together with my teammates, we represented our university at Petrozavodsk Programming Camp in Russia and Central European Regional Contest (ACM ICPC CERC 2019). I believe that the problem solving ability helps me with analytical challenges as well. When it comes to the Data Engineering and Analytics at TUM, I like the course structure and the wide selec- tion of elective courses. Whether it is Computer Vision, Data Analytics or Data Engineering, I am ready to dive into all these fascinating areas. Therefore, it would be an honor to continue pursuing my passion at Technical University of Munich.
